FFmpeg usually stops after one podcast episode because it has reached the end of the input it was given. A single file and a finite playlist both end unless you explicitly loop the input. For one episode, put -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i; for several episodes, build the ordered list as one concat input and loop that input. This is the likely explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis: the command, playlist, logs and YouTube stream-health report determine what happened in a particular case.
First find where the stream stops
A public YouTube Live page stopping its updates does not by itself prove FFmpeg exited. Check the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s health information separately.
- Show FFmpeg’s ordinary logs. Temporarily remove
-loglevel quietand any shell redirection that hides output. Note the last input opened, the final warning or error, and the process exit code. FFmpeg’s-xerroroption can make it stop on errors, so identify any error-related options in the command before interpreting an exit. - If the next episode never opens, check that the process received the intended playlist, that its order and filenames are correct, and that paths, quoting, working directory and file permissions are right.
- If each episode opens but the stream ends at the list’s end, check how the playlist input is built and whether that input is looped. The concat demuxer reads its listed files sequentially; the list is finite unless you loop it.
- If playback reaches another episode but glitches or errors, inspect the media streams and timestamps at the transition. The concat demuxer expects matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Unequal durations can create timestamp gaps, and inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts.
- If FFmpeg keeps running but YouTube reports an unhealthy or rejected feed, compare timestamped errors in YouTube Live Control Room with FFmpeg’s logs. YouTube lists ingest errors involving codecs, bitrates, audio/video stream count, audio channels, frame rate and keyframe frequency.
For a specific diagnosis, the useful evidence is the complete command with the stream key redacted, the playlist, ffprobe stream summaries for its files, FFmpeg output from startup through exit, the exit status, and YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages at the time.
Loop one episode with FFmpeg
Put -stream_loop -1 before the -i for the input you want to repeat. It requests indefinite looping of that input.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i episode.mp4 [encoding and output options] "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL"
-re reads a file at its native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1 and can be useful for pacing file packets for live output. Do not apply read-rate limiting indiscriminately to a genuine live or capture-device input: FFmpeg warns that a low read rate there may cause packet loss.
This is a structural example, not a complete command for every source file or channel. Set output codec, stream mapping, resolution and bitrate for the media and the settings shown in your YouTube channel setup. Use the current ingest URL and stream key from that setup, and keep the key private.

Loop an ordered playlist of episodes
For compatible files, the concat demuxer can present a list as one sequential input. Create a manifest such as episodes.ffconcat:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
file 'episode-03.mp4'
With relative paths, run from the directory containing the manifest and episode files, or use paths that resolve correctly from your working directory. Loop the concat input by placing -stream_loop -1 before its -i:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i episodes.ffconcat [encoding and output options] "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_URL"
The demuxer reads the manifest in order; looping makes that finite sequence repeat. It does not make incompatible files compatible. The files need matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Test transitions locally and review the logs before broadcasting.
When the episodes do not match
If the files need conversion or normalization, FFmpeg’s concat filter is an alternative that re-encodes the inputs. It also has stream-parameter and timestamp requirements, so normalize incompatible media deliberately rather than assuming the filter will accept arbitrary files. FFmpeg’s FAQ discusses concat-filter workflows: How can I concatenate video files?

Do not confuse input EOF with a dropped connection
Reaching the end of a local file or finite concat list is an input-completion event. A failed RTMP/RTMPS output connection is a separate problem. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options do not turn a local episode list into a loop: its documentation says reconnect concerns disconnection before EOF, while reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error for reconnect purposes and is described as useful for live or endless streams. Check the actual logs before changing reconnect flags: FFmpeg protocols documentation.
Check YouTube ingest settings and stream health
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and recommends RTMPS. Its Live error guidance gives more specific diagnostics for codec, bitrate, stream count, audio channels, frame rate and keyframe frequency. The broad codec warning on the error page says H.264 video and AAC audio, while the settings table lists additional choices; follow the settings applicable to your ingest mode and the particular error shown in Studio rather than assuming the broad warning covers every configuration.

Choose the loop method that fits the media
| Approach | Best fit | Key check or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Loop one input with -stream_loop -1 |
One self-contained episode or video to repeat | It repeats the same file; check that the end-to-start transition is acceptable. |
| Concat demuxer plus input looping | Several episodes with matching stream structures | Can avoid re-encoding, but streams must match and duration/timestamp differences can affect transitions. |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Files that need conversion or normalized output | Requires more processing and deliberate handling of stream parameters and timestamps. |
| Managed cloud playlist service | A creator who prefers not to keep a local FFmpeg process running | It is an alternative operating model, not a diagnosis of a local command. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a managed way to keep prerecorded episodes looping on YouTube Live, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
