If FFmpeg exits when your internet connection drops, run it under an operating-system process supervisor configured to relaunch it. That is different from reconnecting the stream transport: FFmpeg’s documented -reconnect options are HTTP protocol options, and do not establish that an RTMPS output will reconnect. Check the installed FFmpeg version, protect the YouTube stream key, and rehearse the full recovery with your actual Live Control Room event before relying on it during a service.
Will FFmpeg reconnect to YouTube Live?
Not necessarily. The word “reconnect” can describe two different actions:
- Transport reconnect: a running FFmpeg process tries to restore a particular network connection.
- Process restart: a supervisor launches FFmpeg again after the process exits.
FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and related retry controls in its HTTP protocol section. Those options govern HTTP connections; they do not establish that an RTMPS output will recover from a dropped connection. An option being present in an FFmpeg build is not proof that it applies to the output protocol in your command.
FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation describes reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That statement is about the HTTP option, not a general RTMPS output switch.

How do I make FFmpeg restart after the internet drops?
First establish whether FFmpeg is still running. If it remains alive, restarting it automatically may not help; inspect its output-protocol behavior and logs. If it exits, use a service manager or a carefully controlled restart loop to launch the same command again.
1. Check the failure before changing the command
- Record whether FFmpeg exits, stays running, or repeatedly reports connection errors.
- Keep the relevant logs so you can distinguish a network failure from a rejected key, bad URL, or encoder/configuration problem.
- Confirm which protocol is used for the input and which for the YouTube output. An HTTP input and RTMPS output are separate connections.
2. Verify the YouTube destination and credentials
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the server URL and stream key for the intended event, and use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a TLS-encrypted extension of RTMP. Do not assume a visible default RTMP address is the correct endpoint for your setup.
YouTube describes the stream key as password-like: it lets YouTube accept the feed and should be kept private. Store it outside shared or public scripts and repositories, and avoid printing it in routine logs. If it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder’s protected configuration.

3. Configure a supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg
Use your operating system’s service manager or a restart loop to launch the known-good FFmpeg command again when the process exits. Configure a delay between attempts so a bad key, invalid URL, or continuing outage does not create a rapid restart loop. Retain logs and make sure the service starts under the intended account with access to its configuration.

Do not copy an untested generic command into a church production system. The command, user account, environment, file paths, restart policy, and shutdown behavior depend on the operating system and capture setup. Test how restarting the whole process affects inputs and encoders; it can interrupt or reset them as well as the YouTube connection.
4. Treat HTTP reconnect flags as input-specific
If your command reads an HTTP source, HTTP reconnect controls may be relevant to that input when supported by the installed build. FFmpeg command-line options are positional: protocol options must be placed with the appropriate input option group. Putting an HTTP option in front of an RTMPS output does not make it an RTMPS reconnect setting.

Before relying on any option, check the installed build and its help with ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h protocol=http. FFmpeg 8.0’s HTTP source includes retry controls such as reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_total_max, and respect_retry_after, but defaults and availability can differ in older or distribution-specific builds. Confirm the help output for the version you actually run.
Which recovery approach fits?
| Approach | What it handles | Limit | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg protocol-level reconnect | Errors supported by the protocol to which the option applies; the documented reconnect options discussed here are for HTTP. | Does not establish recovery for an RTMPS output. | An HTTP input or another protocol-specific case confirmed in the installed build. |
| Process supervision | FFmpeg process termination, by launching it again after failure. | Cannot fix a bad endpoint, rejected key, YouTube event state, or ongoing outage. | A stable unattended command where restarting the whole process is acceptable. |
| Backup encoder failover | A separately configured backup path, if tested and confirmed to take over in the player. | More involved than restarting one FFmpeg process. | A church that needs a stronger continuity plan and can rehearse the backup architecture. |
YouTube’s failover guidance recommends testing the backup encoder and confirming the player rolls over. That is a distinct design from having one FFmpeg process restart.

How to rehearse recovery before a service
YouTube advises setting up ahead of time, checking the preview, monitoring stream health, and testing failover. Its test guidance includes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Schedule a rehearsal rather than testing during a service.

- Prepare the event: confirm the RTMPS server URL, key, and stream settings in Live Control Room; start the encoder early enough to inspect the preview.
- Establish a baseline: confirm picture and sound reach YouTube and note the FFmpeg and supervisor logs.
- Simulate the failure: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, following YouTube’s failover-testing guidance.
- Watch the recovery: confirm whether FFmpeg exits, whether the supervisor relaunches it, and whether the intended event shows a returning preview and healthy audio and video.
- Practice the human fallback: ensure the person on duty knows how to diagnose the failure and take over if automation does not restore the feed.
- Repeat after changes: rehearse again after changing FFmpeg builds, stream settings, service configuration, or the YouTube event setup.
YouTube does not promise a universal disconnect grace period or that a restarted encoder will always rejoin the same event. Verify the behavior of your particular channel and event during rehearsal.

The connection drops but FFmpeg stays alive
A supervisor typically reacts to process exit, not necessarily to a broken output connection inside a still-running process. Inspect the logs and determine whether the process is actually exiting. Do not assume HTTP reconnect options repair an RTMPS output.
FFmpeg starts again but YouTube rejects or does not show the feed
Check the server URL and key against the intended event in Live Control Room, then inspect the preview and stream health. Confirm in rehearsal whether YouTube keeps that event active across your interruption; a process restart alone cannot establish event state.

The restart loop continues
A continuing internet or ISP outage, incorrect credentials, incorrect endpoint, or stream-configuration issue can make every launch fail. Use the logs to distinguish repeated connection failures from configuration errors. Add a delay between attempts and investigate the cause instead of relying on repeated restarts.
The feed returns but is unstable
Review local network stability and available upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and reviewing stream health. An Ethernet cable can be useful for the wired connection and for the planned disconnect test, but it cannot prevent an ISP or upstream failure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded church recordings playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
