You can turn a podcast archive into a YouTube Live feed by running FFmpeg on a Linux VPS and letting systemd supervise it. FFmpeg reads and paces the audio/video source, sends it to YouTube over RTMPS, and systemd can restart the process if it exits. These are separate layers: a running FFmpeg process does not by itself prove that YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast is live or has recovered.

How the setup fits together

YouTube separates the viewer-facing event from the incoming media connection. A liveBroadcast represents the event and resulting video; a liveStream represents the feed sent by your encoder. A broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts. See Google’s broadcast and stream model.

  1. Your YouTube channel provides or creates a live stream and its ingest details.
  2. FFmpeg reads a local recording or an explicitly managed episode sequence and sends audio and video to the ingest endpoint.
  3. YouTube reports whether it is receiving the stream and its health.
  4. systemd runs FFmpeg as a foreground service and can restart it after a process failure.
  5. You verify the service and YouTube broadcast separately, then check the processed replay after the live transmission ends.

This guide covers a VPS running FFmpeg as a service. It does not assume that one loop command can manage episode order, event scheduling, metadata, or YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle automatically.

Choose the archive behavior before configuring FFmpeg

Play one recording once

Use this when a single live event should end when the recording ends. Plan how you will stop the broadcast and allow YouTube to finish processing the replay. A one-time file input is not a continuous channel.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Repeat one recording continuously

FFmpeg supports input looping, but an endless repeat changes the editorial experience: the same episode starts again at end-of-file. Confirm that this is what you want viewers to receive, and test how the reconnect or loop behaves with the selected broadcast.

Sequence multiple episodes

For a multi-episode archive, define an explicit playlist or orchestration plan. Decide whether an episode boundary should pause, begin another broadcast, or continue into the next item. A single-file loop option does not, on its own, define a reliable playlist, episode metadata, seamless transitions, or recovery policy.

Plan the video track for an audio podcast

A YouTube live feed needs the audio and video streams your chosen ingest configuration expects. If the source is audio-only, provide a visual track such as a static or animated slate and check in YouTube that both streams arrive as intended. The correct visual treatment and encoder profile depend on your source and current YouTube guidance.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, make sure livestreaming is enabled for the channel and that the broadcast and replay settings you need are available. Availability can depend on channel permissions and current YouTube restrictions.
  2. Choose the broadcast model. A default channel stream and an API-created scheduled event have different setup and lifecycle considerations. For an API-scheduled broadcast, Google’s LiveBroadcasts insert reference specifies fields including a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Review the LiveBroadcasts API reference for broadcast settings such as recording from start and DVR.
  3. Get current ingest details. Use YouTube Studio or the API to obtain the current primary ingest address and stream key. The LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion addresses, stream names, status, and health information.
  4. Use secure ingest where supported. Google documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL, with port 443 and a valid YouTube ingest server and path. Follow the current RTMPS ingestion guide and the endpoint YouTube supplies for your stream.
  5. Keep the key secret. Do not put a real stream key in a public unit file, repository, screenshot, or command history. Store it with restricted file permissions and avoid exposing it in service status output or logs.

Prepare the VPS and source files

  • Use a Linux VPS that can read the archive files and sustain the required network connection to YouTube. Capacity depends on the media and encoding method; no universal CPU or bandwidth figure is established here.
  • Install FFmpeg from a suitable distribution package or other trusted source, then check the installed version and its available codecs. FFmpeg options can vary by version and build.
  • Keep source files readable by a dedicated, unprivileged service account. Avoid running a long-lived encoder as root.
  • Make a list or other explicit playlist if you intend to sequence episodes. Confirm file paths, order, permissions, and what should happen at the end of each item.
  • For encoding parameters, consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval. The applicable values are not established here, so do not copy a guessed profile into production.

Build and test the FFmpeg command

FFmpeg documents sending a media file to an RTMP destination at real-time speed and provides input-loop options. Its protocol documentation and command-line documentation are the references for the options supported by your installed version. Construct the command for the actual input codecs, dimensions, audio, video, and intended archive behavior; a command copied without checking those details may fail or produce an unsuitable feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use stream-copy only when the source streams are compatible with the selected YouTube ingest profile and intended output. Copying avoids re-encoding but cannot convert an incompatible codec, create a missing video track, or change properties that need adjustment. Transcoding can provide that conversion, at the cost of VPS processing and a need to choose and validate suitable encoder settings. In either case, confirm the result using YouTube’s stream health information rather than treating FFmpeg’s successful connection as proof of a healthy broadcast.

Keep the ingest endpoint and key out of public examples. Assemble the destination from the current values supplied for your stream, and store secrets in a permission-restricted configuration mechanism appropriate to your distribution. Validate quoting and variable expansion locally; do not assume shell syntax will be interpreted identically inside every systemd setting.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

Create a system service with FFmpeg running in the foreground as its main process. The service should use the dedicated account and working directory, load secrets without making them world-readable, and write logs that an operator can inspect. Choose a deliberate restart policy rather than treating automatic restart as a complete recovery system.

Unit syntax and environment handling vary with the Linux distribution and installed systemd version. Validate the unit against the documentation for that system before enabling it. After editing the unit, use the distribution’s standard systemd reload and service-management commands, then inspect both the unit’s status and its journal logs. Confirm that the configured process is the one you intended and that the key is not printed in status or logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after a process exit; it cannot ensure that the source is still readable, the VPS has adequate resources, YouTube has accepted the reconnect, or the same viewer-facing broadcast has returned to a live state. Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide describes broadcast state transitions. Check YouTube’s broadcast and stream state as well as systemd’s process state.

Test the whole path before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with a private or unlisted event where available, and use a short representative portion of the archive.
  2. Confirm in YouTube that the expected audio and video are arriving and inspect the stream health indicators for missing audio or configuration problems.
  3. Check the VPS service logs for FFmpeg errors, file access problems, and reconnect behavior.
  4. During a controlled maintenance test, interrupt the service or network and observe what happens. Verify whether systemd restarts FFmpeg and separately whether YouTube’s intended broadcast returns to a live state.
  5. Test the actual end-of-file behavior: one-time playback should finish as intended, repeat-one should restart as intended, and a playlist should advance according to its explicit plan.
  6. After a completed event, stop FFmpeg cleanly and allow YouTube to process the replay. A completed broadcast is converted to a YouTube video, but availability may be delayed. Check the channel video and the applicable archive or replay settings; see the broadcast settings reference.

Copyright, reused material, and channel suitability

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights needed for every episode and every included element, including music, clips, artwork, and any third-party material. An archive being publicly available or previously published does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s rules and the rights attached to a particular archive determine what can be used; this guide cannot establish clearance for material you do not own or license.

Also consider whether a continuous replay serves your viewers and fits your channel. Repeating episodes does not automatically make them newly produced content, and this setup guide does not determine how YouTube will assess a channel or its monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies and your own rights documentation before making the feed public.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely area to inspect What to do
FFmpeg exits immediately Command options, missing file, file permissions, or unavailable codec in the installed build. Inspect the service journal and run a controlled test with the same account, input path, and FFmpeg build. Correct the command or permissions before relying on systemd restarts.
FFmpeg appears active, but YouTube does not show a healthy incoming feed Ingest endpoint, stream key, transport, or media configuration. Recheck the current endpoint and key in YouTube Studio or the API, use the supplied RTMPS details where selected, and inspect YouTube’s stream status and health fields.
YouTube reports missing audio or video Source streams or the output mapping, including an audio-only source without a visual track. Inspect the input’s available streams and the FFmpeg output mapping; provide a suitable visual track for audio-only material and verify both streams in YouTube.
The service restarts but the live event stays offline YouTube broadcast lifecycle, not only the local process. Check the broadcast state and stream health in YouTube, then confirm that the event and stream are associated as intended. A systemd restart alone does not restore the viewer-facing event.
The feed stops between episodes or at end-of-file Archive sequencing and the configured EOF behavior. Decide whether the event should end, repeat, or advance. Implement and test that behavior explicitly instead of assuming a single-file loop option manages a playlist.
The replay is not visible immediately YouTube processing and replay settings. Allow processing to complete, then check the channel’s videos and the broadcast’s recording or archive settings.
The VPS struggles during transcoding Encoder workload, source properties, and host capacity. Check FFmpeg logs and resource use, assess whether compatible stream-copy is possible, or adjust the encoding plan and host capacity. Do not assume a universal CPU requirement.

Costs and ongoing operation

A VPS incurs a hosting cost for the time it runs, and its required capacity depends on whether FFmpeg copies streams or transcodes them, the archive format, and the network service. The evidence here does not establish a provider, plan, or fixed monthly cost. Budget for storage, data transfer, monitoring, and the time needed to maintain the service, and compare providers on those factors rather than choosing a plan from an unsupported universal specification.
