How to Stream a Playlist of Videos on YouTube with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream several local video files in sequence through OBS, add them to an OBS VLC Video source, set its playlist and loop behavior, then connect OBS to YouTube through the Live Control Room. The VLC source needs VLC Media Player installed, with matching architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the playlist exists on YouTube rather than as local files, OBS’s documented VLC playlist workflow does not import a YouTube playlist URL; use browser or display capture instead.

Choose the OBS source that matches your playlist

What you want to show OBS source Key consideration
A playlist of local video files VLC Video Supports playlist order, shuffle and looping; requires VLC installed. OBS Media Sources
One local video file Media Source OBS documents this source for individual media files. OBS Media Sources
A YouTube playlist or another app playing in a browser Window Capture or Display Capture This captures the browser or display; it is separate from importing files into VLC Video. Audio routing and capture behavior depend on your operating system and configuration. OBS Sources Guide

For a documentary channel, use VLC Video when you have the rights-cleared video files and want OBS to play them as a playlist. Choose capture only when the material must be shown from a browser or another application.

Set up a local video playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. Make sure their architectures match. OBS’s documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source to appear. OBS Media Sources
  2. Open or create a scene. In OBS, select a scene in the Scenes dock, or create one for this stream. A scene combines sources; the source list determines which sources appear above others. OBS Sources Guide
  3. Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, click the + button and select VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name if prompted.
  4. Add your files. In the source properties, add the local video files to its playlist and arrange them in the order you want. Use the playlist controls to remove or reorder entries as needed.
  5. Choose playback behavior. Leave shuffle off to play the listed order, or enable it for random playback. Set loop according to whether the playlist should start over after the last item. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as VLC Video defaults. OBS Media Sources
  6. Check what happens when the source is hidden. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If you switch scenes during the stream, decide whether playback should pause and restart or remain part of the visible scene. OBS Media Sources
  7. Fit the video in the preview. Select the VLC Video source and position or resize it in the OBS preview. If other sources overlap it, adjust their order in the Sources list. OBS Sources Guide
  8. Check picture and sound. Play the playlist in OBS before going live. Confirm the video fills the intended area and that its audio is present at a suitable level in the OBS mixer.

If the playlist is on YouTube, capture the browser

The OBS documentation describes VLC Video as a source for media-file playlists, not as an importer for a YouTube playlist URL. To show a YouTube playlist playing in a browser, add a Window Capture source for the browser window or a Display Capture source for the screen, then bring that capture into the scene. OBS documents both capture approaches, but exact audio capture and routing vary by operating system and setup. OBS Sources Guide

  • Confirm the browser picture is visible in the OBS preview and is not obscured by another source.
  • Check OBS’s audio mixer while the browser plays. If its sound is absent, review the audio capture configuration for your operating system.
  • Keep the browser window and playlist playback available for the whole broadcast; this workflow captures the app output rather than playing a local playlist through VLC Video.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. Check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-stream tips state that a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. Eligibility can change, so check your account’s current status and interface in YouTube Studio. YouTube live streaming tips
  2. Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Open the stream settings and locate the stream key. Enter that key in OBS’s stream configuration using YouTube as the service, or the server and key fields if configuring the connection manually. YouTube’s settings page documents stream-key and privacy controls. Manage live stream settings
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
  4. Set the intended visibility. Before starting, choose public, private or unlisted in the YouTube stream settings, depending on who should be able to watch. Manage live stream settings
  5. Start the encoder and check the preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview and testing before the event. Confirm that both picture and audio reach YouTube before you make the stream available to its intended audience. YouTube live streaming tips
  6. Monitor the live broadcast. Keep an eye on picture and sound quality and on the Live Control Room while the playlist runs. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring. YouTube live streaming tips

Check rights and YouTube rules before broadcasting

Having a video file or a public YouTube link does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast it. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video and its audio, including music, archival footage and other included material. A playlist that plays correctly in OBS can still contain material you are not allowed to stream.

YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems

The playlist starts over or plays in an unexpected order Loop or shuffle settings are enabled or disabled contrary to your plan. Reopen VLC Video properties and check loop and shuffle. The documented defaults are loop on and shuffle off. OBS Media Sources
Playback restarts after changing scenes The VLC source is hidden, and its visibility behavior is set to stop and restart playback. Review the source’s visibility behavior and scene setup before the broadcast. OBS Media Sources
A YouTube playlist URL does not work as a VLC playlist The documented VLC Video source workflow is for media files, not a direct YouTube playlist import. Use browser window or display capture to show the playlist playing, and verify picture and audio in OBS. OBS Sources Guide
YouTube does not show a usable live preview The stream may not be connected as expected, or the channel may not currently be eligible to stream. Check the stream key and connection in the Live Control Room, then review channel eligibility and test before the event. YouTube live streaming tips
The stream is visible to the wrong audience The YouTube stream’s privacy setting is not the intended one. Check whether the stream is set to public, private or unlisted before going live. Manage live stream settings
Browser video appears but its sound does not Audio capture or routing differs by operating system and configuration. Check the OBS audio mixer while the browser is playing and review the capture setup for your operating system. OBS Sources Guide

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
