Use FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode to send a compatible local video file to YouTube Live without re-encoding its audio or video. The core command uses -c copy and -re to copy the existing compressed streams and pace file playback in real time. This works only when the file’s streams are compatible with the output container and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.

What “without re-encoding” means

FFmpeg streamcopy passes selected compressed audio and video packets through without decoding and encoding them again. It can avoid the processing and quality-generation loss associated with transcoding, but it cannot make an incompatible codec, stream property, or container acceptable. Streamcopy also cannot apply filters such as resizing or video overlays. See the FFmpeg documentation for streamcopy behavior and options.

FFmpeg may still remux the packets into a different container for output. That is not re-encoding, but it can fail if the output container cannot carry the source streams or lacks required information. If the file needs a codec or dimension change, transcoding is a separate alternative—not a no-re-encode workflow.

Before you start

  • Have a local video file whose encoded audio and video are compatible with YouTube’s chosen ingest path.
  • Install FFmpeg and ensure its ffmpeg command is available in your terminal or command prompt.
  • In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube treats the key like a password; do not share it, and reset it if compromised. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings guidance.

Stream the file with FFmpeg

  1. Use the ingest details from Live Control Room. Confirm the actual server URL and key shown for your stream. Do not copy a credential-bearing example from a webpage or publish your key.
  2. Run this command, replacing the placeholders:
    ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingest-server>/<stream-key>"

Replace input.mp4 with the local file path, and use the server URL and key from YouTube. The output URL shown is a pattern only: use the exact URL form YouTube provides for your stream.

    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview. Wait for video and audio to appear; inspect stream health and test playback before selecting Go live if your stream is configured for manual start. YouTube advises testing and monitoring encoder streams; see its streaming tips.
  4. End the broadcast deliberately. Follow the applicable Live Control Room end-stream setting, then stop FFmpeg. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current help page for the behavior that applies to your stream.

What each FFmpeg option does

  • -re reads the input at its native rate, pacing a file so packets are not sent as fast as FFmpeg can process them. FFmpeg documents read-rate limiting for this kind of real-time output.
  • -i "input.mp4" identifies the local input file.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream from the input.
  • -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists; the trailing ? makes that map optional, so a silent file is not rejected solely for lacking audio.
  • -c copy copies the selected streams without re-encoding.
  • -f flv requests the FLV output muxer. The source streams still need to be compatible with the output and ingest path.

Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum. YouTube also publishes bitrate guidance by resolution and codec. These are ingest recommendations, not confirmation that a particular file meets them. Review the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before streaming rather than relying on an old bitrate copied into a command.

Because -c copy preserves the source encoding, you cannot use it to change the codec, bitrate, frame size, frame rate, or keyframe interval. If your file does not fit YouTube’s current requirements, changing those properties requires transcoding or preparing a compatible source file in advance.

When streamcopy works—and when it does not

Approach What it does Best fit Trade-off
Streamcopy (-c copy) Copies the selected compressed audio/video packets; may remux them into the output container. The source streams are already compatible with the output container and YouTube ingest settings. No re-encoding, but it cannot fix incompatible streams or apply filters.
Transcoding Decodes and re-encodes streams, allowing codec, dimensions, or timing changes. The source needs conversion to meet ingest requirements or needs filtering. Requires encoding work and falls outside the strict no-re-encoding request.

FFmpeg’s documentation explains streamcopy limitations and the distinction from filtering or encoding in its command-line documentation. If direct streamcopy fails because of source compatibility, adding -c copy will not alter the encoded streams or repair their properties.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot write the output header, or reports an unsupported codec or stream. The source may not be stream-copyable into the selected output container or ingest path. Check the source’s streams and YouTube’s current encoder settings. Re-encoding to a compatible format is an option only if you can relax the no-re-encoding requirement.
  • The preview does not appear. Check that FFmpeg is still running, the exact server URL and stream key are from the selected YouTube stream, and the stream is configured to accept encoder input. Treat the key as a credential; reset it if it may have been exposed.
  • The stream arrives too quickly or does not behave like a live feed. Make sure the command includes -re before the input so FFmpeg reads the file at its native rate.
  • There is video but no audio. The example maps only the first audio stream if present. Confirm that the file contains an audio stream and that it is compatible with the ingest path. If it has multiple audio tracks, the command does not select them all.
  • You need to resize, filter, or change stream properties. Streamcopy cannot do that. Prepare a compatible file beforehand or use a transcoding workflow, understanding that it re-encodes.
  • The broadcast starts but has poor stream health. Check YouTube’s current bitrate, codec, keyframe, and resolution guidance for the actual source format, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and health indicators.
