The usual shape is source → convert or scale → encode → flvmux → RTMP sink. YouTube recommends RTMPS where your installed GStreamer sink and endpoint support it.
Before you build the pipeline
You need a YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, a working GStreamer installation with the source, encoder, muxer and sink elements you intend to use, and an upload connection that can sustain the chosen bitrate. GStreamer elements and properties vary across installations, so check your local plugins rather than assuming an example command will work unchanged.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in public commands, screenshots, logs or scripts.
- Choose the transport and sink. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. The GStreamer sink documentation describes RTMP delivery; verify that your installed sink/build and the endpoint you plan to use support the intended secure connection.
- Confirm available elements. Use
gst-inspect-1.0with the element name to inspect its properties, pad templates and plugin details. Check the source, encoder, flvmuxand selected sink before assembling the full pipeline. - Select a realistic output quality. Use a stable bitrate your connection can maintain, and test the incoming preview and stream health before the event.
Choose between GStreamer’s RTMP sinks
The official GStreamer documentation describes two sink implementations. Neither is established as universally better; choose based on what your installation provides and whether it connects successfully to your specific YouTube endpoint.
| Sink | Documented role and example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
rtmpsink |
Part of GStreamer’s RTMP Bad Plug-ins package; its location property accepts an RTMP URL. The documentation shows flvmux ! rtmpsink. |
Whether the plugin is installed, which URL form it accepts, and whether your build and endpoint support the transport you want. |
rtmp2sink |
A second RTMP implementation; its documentation shows x264enc ! flvmux ! rtmp2sink. The page also lists connection, pacing and statistics options. |
Property availability can depend on GStreamer version. For example, the documentation marks extra connection arguments since 1.26 and stop commands since 1.20. |
Inspect the element locally before using a property from online documentation. The installed version, plugin build and supported endpoint behavior matter more than the sink name alone.

Build the pipeline from source to sink
1. Provide video and audio
Start with your actual video and audio sources, or a test source for a first connection check. Add conversion, scaling or rate adjustment only as needed to produce caps accepted by the chosen encoders. For a stream with sound, create a separate audio path and encode it to a format compatible with the muxer and YouTube settings.
2. Encode to YouTube-compatible settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends progressive video, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC in its advanced guidance. For audio it lists 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.

Use an encoder element and settings available in your own build. These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that every GStreamer encoder exposes identical controls or that every combination is accepted by a particular endpoint.
3. Set bitrate and keyframes
YouTube’s encoder settings page, checked in 2026, gives these H.264 video figures. Its table describes a minimum and a recommended bitrate; the recommendation is not a measure of what your connection can reliably upload.

| Output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. It recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to match that guidance, taking the frame rate and the encoder’s interval units into account. GStreamer’s GstForceKeyUnit event is a general mechanism for requesting an encoder keyframe, but encoder support and behavior vary; inspect the selected encoder’s documentation or gst-inspect-1.0 output rather than assuming a universal property.
4. Mux and send
Join the encoded video and audio branches through flvmux, then connect the muxer output to the chosen RTMP sink. Supply the URL and key using the input form supported by that sink and the stream configuration. Do not paste a real key into a publicly shared command.

GStreamer’s official rtmpsink example is:
gst-launch-1.0 -v videotestsrc ! ffenc_flv ! flvmux ! rtmpsink location='rtmp://localhost/path/to/stream live=1'
This illustrates the mux-and-send pattern, not a YouTube-ready command: the destination is a localhost example, and the encoder may not be installed or suitable for your stream.
The rtmp2sink documentation shows:
gst-launch-1.0 videotestsrc ! x264enc ! flvmux ! rtmp2sink location=rtmp://server.example.com/live/myStream
This is also an illustrative example. Replace the example destination with the URL and key for your configured YouTube stream, following the syntax supported by your local sink; confirm the necessary plugins and properties before running it. These video-only examples do not provide the audio branch a real program stream needs.

Connect, test and go live
- Start sending to the copied destination. Keep the stream key private, and verify that the server URL and key belong to the stream you selected.
- Check GStreamer output. Run with useful verbosity during setup, inspect negotiated caps and watch for bus errors. Confirm that both encoded branches reach the muxer and that the sink establishes its connection.
- Wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. In Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health before making the event public. For a scheduled event, select “Go live” when that workflow requires it.
- Test representative content. Include audio and the kind of motion the real program contains; a static test pattern alone will not reveal every bitrate or encoding issue. Monitor stream health while live.
For an application built on GStreamer rather than a one-shot gst-launch-1.0 command, account for live-source behavior as well. A live source can report GST_STATE_CHANGE_NO_PREROLL; applications may also need to handle buffering messages and clock loss, as covered by GStreamer’s streaming tutorial.
Troubleshoot common failures
- “No such element” or a missing property: The required plugin may not be installed, or the property may not exist in your GStreamer version. Inspect the element with
gst-inspect-1.0, install the appropriate plugin package for your platform, or use an available alternative. - The sink cannot connect: Recheck the copied server URL and key, the URL syntax expected by the sink, network access, and whether the selected RTMP or RTMPS endpoint is supported by your build. Avoid assuming RTMPS works merely because YouTube recommends it.
- YouTube receives no usable video or audio: Check negotiated caps, encoder output, muxer connections and bus errors. Confirm that audio and video are both encoded and reach
flvmuxin formats it accepts. - The preview appears, but stream health is poor: Compare the actual sustained upload bitrate with your chosen output, then lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate if needed. YouTube advises selecting a quality that is reliable on the available upload connection.
- Keyframe warnings or delayed preview: Verify the encoder’s actual keyframe interval and units. Target two seconds and remain at or below four seconds; check encoder documentation if the interval does not behave as expected.
- The event is not live after connection: Confirm the preview has arrived and check whether the scheduled-event workflow requires you to select “Go live” in Live Control Room.
- An embedded application stalls after a source or clock change: Handle the relevant GStreamer state, buffering and clock-loss messages in the application rather than treating every live-source state as a fatal error.
