You’ll need an FFmpeg build with the required text-rendering libraries, a logo image, a text file, and encoder settings that match YouTube’s current guidance. The command below is a starting point, not a tested, plug-and-play recipe: replace its paths and ingest details, then verify it locally before broadcasting.
What you need before building the filter graph
- A video input and a transparent logo image, such as a PNG.
- A plain-text file containing the message you want to scroll.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the libraries required by
drawtext. - The stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Studio.
- An upload connection that can sustain the bitrate selected for your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
FFmpeg filter graphs pass through several parsing layers: filter options, filtergraph syntax, and the shell. Punctuation, colons, quotes, commas, backslashes, and special characters in paths can require escaping. Keeping the message in a text file avoids much of the escaping needed for embedded text. Test the command with the exact shell and FFmpeg build you’ll use live. See the FFmpeg filter syntax and escaping documentation.
Check that your FFmpeg build supports drawtext
FFmpeg’s filter reference says drawtext requires a build configured with --enable-libfreetype. Font fallback and the font option require --enable-libfontconfig; text shaping requires --enable-libfribidi. The current filter reference also lists libharfbuzz as a build requirement. Optional-library availability differs between FFmpeg builds, so don’t assume that every binary supports the same features.
If FFmpeg reports an unknown filter or a library-related error, inspect the build you installed and consult the matching FFmpeg filter documentation. The requirements and examples below describe filter behavior; they do not guarantee that a particular packaged binary includes the necessary libraries.

Place a transparent logo with overlay
The overlay filter composites its second video input over its first. FFmpeg’s documented transparent-image example places the logo ten pixels from the left and bottom edges:

overlay=main_w-overlay_w-10:main_h-overlay_h-10These examples position the logo but do not resize it. If it is too large, scale it in the filter graph before applying the overlay; choose a size that remains legible without covering important picture content. Preserve the image’s alpha transparency so the logo’s transparent areas remain clear. The FFmpeg overlay documentation describes the filter and its positioning expressions.
Render and scroll text with drawtext
FFmpeg’s drawtext filter can render literal text or read it from a file. Its documented right-to-left scrolling example uses a time-based x-position expression:

drawtext="fontsize=15:fontfile=FreeSerif.ttf:textfile=LONG_LINE:y=h-line_h:x=-50*t"The value multiplied by t controls horizontal movement, so changing the coefficient changes the speed. The y expression sets the vertical position. The example’s font size and speed are documentation values, not recommendations for every resolution. Adjust them for your output and test the result at the intended playback size. A text file also makes it easier to change punctuation or wording without reworking the filter string. Combine the logo, scrolling text, and YouTube output
This illustrative command takes a video, a transparent logo, and a one-line text file, composites the logo, then draws a scrolling message:

-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"This is a synthesized, untested starting point—not a verbatim FFmpeg or YouTube recipe. Replace /path/to/font.ttf, /path/to/message.txt, the input filenames, and the RTMP destination with values that work in your environment. The x expression wraps the text back to the right after it moves past the left edge; check whether that looping marquee is the behavior you want.
The sample encoder settings are not universal. Set codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and protocol for the stream you intend to send and YouTube’s current recommendations. Keep your stream key private: YouTube describes it as a password and address for your feed.

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the table for the actual stream you plan to send.
For context, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60; it lists 6 Mbps as the minimum for H.264 at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality. Use the matching entry for your chosen output, and run a connection speed test before setting a sustained upload bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
Connect in YouTube Studio and test before going live
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Studio, set up the live stream and copy the stream URL and key provided for your encoder. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings guidance; treat the key as a password.
- Fill in the command. Set the input paths, filter options, output resolution and frame rate, encoder parameters, and YouTube destination. Confirm the chosen codec and bitrate suit the intended stream.
- Run a rehearsal. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Confirm the logo is positioned and scaled correctly, the text is readable and scrolls as intended, and audio is present.
- Watch stream health. Check YouTube’s stream health and any messages before and during the broadcast. Resolve reported ingest or connection problems rather than assuming a running FFmpeg process means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Troubleshoot common failures
- “No such filter” or a drawtext library error: the installed FFmpeg build may lack the required optional libraries. Check that build and its matching documentation for
drawtextsupport. - The command fails around punctuation or a path: the filter string may be interpreted differently at the shell, filtergraph, or option layer. Simplify the graph, move message text into a file, and account for special characters in paths and expressions.
- The logo is missing or in the wrong place: verify the logo input is present and that the graph uses it as the second input to
overlay. Check the x/y expressions against the main video and logo dimensions; the basic example does not resize the image. - The text is clipped, too small, or scrolls at the wrong speed: adjust the font size, vertical position, and time coefficient for the actual output dimensions, then test playback. The documented font size and speed are examples only.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or rejects the ingest: check the stream URL and key, protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm that the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
- The key may have been exposed: treat it as compromised and replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before streaming again.
