How to Stream a Folder of Videos to YouTube Live Continuously from Linux

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream a folder of videos to YouTube Live from Linux by sequencing the files with an encoder such as FFmpeg or OBS, sending the output to the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, and keeping the playback process supervised. For an unattended, headless setup, FFmpeg with a service manager such as systemd is a practical starting point—but there is no single command that safely handles every mix of file formats. Test your actual videos, transitions, and recovery behavior before relying on a long broadcast.

What you need to make a folder play continuously

There are two separate jobs: the Linux computer must play files in the order you choose, and an encoder must send a live-paced stream to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API models the incoming stream and the broadcast separately; in normal use, you configure the ingest details through YouTube Studio and provide them to your encoder. Google’s LiveStreams documentation describes the stream resource and its ingest configuration.

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming available for the account. Check the channel’s current eligibility and status in YouTube Studio; account eligibility is not established by this guide.
  • A Linux host that can read the media folder, sustain the selected encode workload, and maintain an internet connection.
  • An encoder workflow. FFmpeg suits scripted, headless operation; OBS Studio offers a graphical interface.
  • Video and audio files you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast does not grant permission to use copyrighted material.

For an always-on deployment, the host may be a computer you already own or a server you maintain remotely. A third-party Ubuntu VPS example shows one possible FFmpeg-and-systemd design, while other project examples describe small Linux hosts. These are implementation examples, not proof that any particular machine can transcode your files or that any setup will run without interruption.

Choose the Linux workflow

FFmpeg for a headless, scripted stream

FFmpeg is a good fit when you want playback and recovery managed without an open desktop. A Linux process can read a prepared sequence and send an encoded output to YouTube; systemd can supervise the process and attempt to restart it after an exit or reboot. Examples of this approach exist for Ubuntu VPS deployments and smaller Linux hosts, but their settings are specific to those projects.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

There is no universal FFmpeg command for an arbitrary folder. Inputs can differ in codecs, resolution, frame rate, duration, and audio format; a command that works for one collection may fail or produce bad transitions with another. Validate the command against your installed FFmpeg build and representative files. Decide explicitly whether to copy compatible encoded streams or decode and encode again: copying avoids another encode but requires compatible stream parameters, while re-encoding adds CPU or hardware-encoder load.

OBS Studio for a visual workflow

OBS Studio can send an RTMP stream and may be preferable if you want to inspect the output and control a scene visually. A folder-based playlist or media source still needs an explicit order and end-of-list behavior; confirm the installed OBS version’s source and playlist behavior rather than assuming a folder will loop as desired. A community OBS example demonstrates an RTMP destination, not a complete, universal tutorial for continuous playback.

For either workflow, keep the media files accessible for the entire run. A local computer avoids renting a server if it is already suitable; a VPS moves the always-on machine and file storage to a remote environment that you must configure and maintain. The sources do not establish a general cost or reliability advantage for either choice.

Prepare and test the video sequence

  1. Make the file order deliberate. Put the intended sequence in a playlist or another explicit ordered list. Do not rely on filesystem listing order, which may not match the order you want viewers to see.
  2. Decide what happens at the end. Configure the chosen workflow to repeat the sequence if you want it to loop, or arrange a longer playlist if the broadcast should continue with different material. Confirm what happens after the final item and during transitions.
  3. Check representative files. Test files from the beginning, middle, and end of the collection, including those with different dimensions, frame rates, codecs, or audio. Watch transitions for freezes, black frames, unexpected silence, or playback gaps.
  4. Choose copy or re-encode intentionally. Stream copying can work when the files are compatible with the output and one another. Re-encoding can create a consistent output from mixed sources, but increases compute demand. Do not assume that a small Linux board can transcode a particular collection without testing its real workload.
  5. Test for a realistic duration. Run the sequence long enough to observe a loop boundary and any file transitions that matter. Confirm both the Linux process and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before making the broadcast unattended.

Configure YouTube ingest and encoder settings

Get the current ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or configure the live broadcast for your channel.
  2. In the broadcast’s stream settings, obtain the current ingest server URL and stream key. Use the values displayed for that broadcast rather than copying an old key or assuming a server address.
  3. Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a script repository, logs, screenshots, or support messages.
  4. Start a test broadcast and check YouTube Studio’s stream health before relying on the setup.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder streaming. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio; 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose a starting resolution and bitrate

The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your upload connection can sustain the stream. The official page does not state a publication year; it was accessed 2026-10-03.

Output YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

Choose a target your sustained upload can carry, allowing room for audio and network variation, then test under the conditions in which the stream will run. If the source files vary in frame rate or dimensions, choose an output approach that you have verified handles those differences rather than assuming the platform will normalize the files for the encoder.

Use HLS only when its specific requirements fit

HLS ingestion is not a drop-in alternative to RTMPS. YouTube documents it for particular needs, including HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP, and notes its higher latency. The HLS workflow requires 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guidance if you specifically need HLS; otherwise, use the ordinary RTMPS encoder path.

Keep the stream running and detect failures

Continuous playback is not the same as an indefinitely active YouTube broadcast. A service manager can restart a failed Linux process, but it cannot by itself prove that YouTube is still receiving usable video or that the broadcast remains active. Project examples use systemd for supervision and recovery, but do not establish a production design that works for every file library or YouTube session.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Define restart behavior. Decide whether a process failure or machine reboot should restart the sequence from the beginning or resume at a particular item. Test the actual behavior.
  • Monitor both ends. Check Linux service and encoder logs for exits or input errors, and check YouTube Studio for stream health. A running process alone does not prove the broadcast is healthy.
  • Test interruptions. Simulate or observe a process restart and network interruption before leaving the system unattended. Confirm whether the encoder reconnects and whether YouTube’s broadcast needs operator attention.
  • Plan for media changes. If files are moved, removed, or replaced during a run, verify how the playlist responds; do not assume it will recover cleanly.
  • Protect access. Keep the stream key private and restrict access to any scripts or service configuration containing it.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Follow that advice with representative movement and audio, and review stream health in Studio rather than relying only on local playback.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect or stale ingest URL or stream key; encoder not connected Copy the current ingest details from the broadcast’s stream settings, verify the encoder destination, and inspect its connection logs. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
Stream starts, then stops at a file boundary The sequence reached its end, looping is not configured, or the next file cannot be read Check the playlist order and end behavior, then test the transition into the next file with the same FFmpeg build or OBS setup.
Black frames, freezes, or missing audio between files Incompatible source parameters, decoder errors, or a transition the workflow does not handle Test each affected file and transition; consider a consistent re-encode path if copying streams is incompatible, and check CPU capacity.
Unstable stream health Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, or the encoder output is misconfigured Compare the sustained connection with the selected video bitrate plus audio overhead. Confirm constant bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance.
Service restarts but viewers still see no usable stream The process supervisor restarted the program, but the ingest connection or YouTube broadcast did not recover as expected Check service logs and YouTube Studio separately; test reconnect behavior and identify when manual intervention is needed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain a Linux machine and encoder, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud.
