How to Stream a Folder of Gaming Videos to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream several gaming videos as one YouTube Live broadcast, use OBS Studio with its VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and send the OBS output to YouTube using your stream URL and stream key. A folder by itself is not a live input: OBS plays the videos and encodes the resulting feed. Install VLC first, choose the playlist order and looping behavior, then test the exact files before going live.

What you need before setting up the playlist

  • OBS Studio, which will play and encode the videos.
  • VLC media player. The VLC Video source will not appear in OBS without VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, plus a video folder whose contents you have the right to broadcast.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate you choose.

YouTube says channels must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Its current general guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for streamers. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

Build a multi-file playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC and open OBS. If OBS was already running during installation, restart it so OBS can detect VLC.
  2. Create or select a scene. In the Sources panel, choose + and select VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
  3. Add the videos. In the VLC Video source properties, use the playlist controls to add the individual files from your folder. OBS’s VLC Video source supports multiple playlist items; the standard Media Source is designed for an individual file and offers a single-file loop option. OBS describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist of items. OBS Media Sources
  4. Set playback behavior deliberately. Keep the playlist in the order you want viewers to see. Leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if a randomized order is intended. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should start again after the final item. Without looping, expect playback to end when the final file finishes.
  5. Check the picture and sound. Select the source and fit it to the canvas if needed. Preview every video, verify its audio, framing, and position in the sequence, and confirm what happens at the end of the playlist. Supported playback depends on the codecs, containers, and audio tracks on your machine; the OBS playlist feature does not guarantee every file will decode correctly.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Set up the event in YouTube Studio. Create or select the livestream and open its encoder or stream settings to find the stream URL and stream key. YouTube identifies encoders as a way to send gameplay and other video to a live broadcast. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, use the stream URL YouTube provides as well. Labels can vary with OBS versions and account connection method.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. YouTube: Manage your live stream settings
  4. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Use the server address supplied for the event rather than guessing or reusing an address. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Choose stable video and audio settings

Use a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your computer can encode and your actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube encoder settings

  • Start with a sustainable resolution and frame rate. A high-resolution or 60 fps output needs more encoding and upload capacity. If the stream stutters or the connection struggles, reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than pushing beyond stable capacity.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR). Set the encoder’s rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds where those controls are available.
  • Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% capacity above the total stream bitrate. For example, a stream configured at 6 Mbps calls for roughly 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation. This is upload bandwidth, not download speed. YouTube streaming tips
  • Check audio as well as video. Listen to the stream preview and confirm the playlist’s audio is neither missing nor unexpectedly loud. A video-only preview is not enough to verify a gaming-video playlist.

Test, then start the broadcast

  1. Run through every file before scheduling. Confirm the expected order, playback, image framing, audio, and end-of-playlist or loop behavior. Resolve missing files or decoding problems while you can still change the playlist.
  2. Start early enough to inspect the preview. YouTube suggests setting up an encoder at least 2 hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that time to check the Live Control Room preview and correct any issues before viewers arrive. YouTube streaming tips
  3. Monitor stream health during the broadcast. Watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and check both sound and picture. Test with movement and audio similar to what the real playlist contains; a static desktop or silent clip may not expose the same problems. YouTube streaming tips

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Having a local copy of a gaming video does not by itself establish the right to livestream it. Check the rights and permissions for gameplay footage, music, commentary, and any third-party material in each file before broadcasting. YouTube’s copyright or policy actions can affect a stream or the channel; eligibility to livestream does not grant permission to rebroadcast content.

Also distinguish a livestream from a channel’s longer-term monetization eligibility. Repeating or looping videos is a playback setting, not a guarantee that content meets YouTube’s originality or monetization requirements. Make sure the videos provide the original or appropriately licensed material and context your channel intends to offer.

Troubleshoot common problems

What you see Likely cause What to do
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check the Sources add menu again. OBS Media Sources
A playlist item is black, silent, or fails to play The file’s codec, container, or audio track may not decode on the computer. Test that exact file in the playlist and inspect its playback and audio before going live. Replace or convert a problematic file using a workflow you trust, then test the resulting file in OBS.
The playlist stops after the last video Loop Playlist is off. Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart.
Videos play in an unexpected order The playlist order or shuffle setting is not what you intended. Review the item order and leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence.
YouTube does not receive the OBS stream The event may not be ready, or the URL/key may be incorrect. Confirm the event’s stream settings in YouTube Studio, re-enter the supplied URL and key in OBS, and protect the key from exposure. Confirm live streaming is enabled on the channel.
Stream health reports instability or viewers see buffering The encoder bitrate may exceed sustainable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Check actual upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream is stable. Monitor stream health again.
There is no preview time before the scheduled start The encoder was started too close to the event. For the next broadcast, follow YouTube’s suggested setup and encoder-start lead times so you can inspect the preview and fix errors before the audience arrives.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded gaming videos looping on YouTube Live without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
