You can run a prerecorded synthwave radio stream on YouTube with FFmpeg by looping or sequencing prepared media, encoding it to YouTube’s ingest requirements, and sending it to the server URL with your channel’s stream key. The loop handles the media; it does not automatically restart a failed FFmpeg process or repair a broken network connection. A dependable 24/7 setup therefore also needs monitoring, recovery planning, rights clearance, and an archive plan.
How the 24/7 FFmpeg setup works
The basic chain is prepared video and audio, an FFmpeg input or playlist, an encoded output, then YouTube Live ingest. YouTube describes an encoder as converting content into a digital format and requires the stream’s server URL and stream key. Looping a file or playlist only controls what media FFmpeg reads; it does not supervise the process or guarantee that output reconnects after an interruption.
For a radio-style channel, decide whether each visual is part of the program (such as animated artwork) or whether a static image is sufficient. Prepare and test the media before broadcasting. Do not assume that looping a single file produces seamless transitions between tracks, or that an example command will run unattended on every FFmpeg build.
Prepare YouTube Live before configuring FFmpeg
- Enable live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help’s live-stream setup guidance reviewed in 2026. Enable it ahead of your planned launch.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Store it outside public scripts, screenshots, or repositories, and regenerate it if exposed.
- Confirm ingest and test. Configure FFmpeg with the server URL and key, start a private or otherwise appropriate test, and check YouTube’s stream health before promoting a continuous broadcast.
Choose an ingest format and bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. The exact settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

| Setting | Practical direction |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 is a widely documented starting point; YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1. Confirm support in your installed FFmpeg build and match YouTube’s current ingest guidance. |
| Rate control | Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for encoder settings. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds, per YouTube Help’s settings reviewed in 2026. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 are listed by YouTube. Check the chosen codec and sample settings against the current encoder guidance. |
| H.264 at 1080p30 | YouTube lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube’s ingest figures for that exact combination, not a claim that every synthwave visual requires the recommended rate. |
Choose a quality your sustained upload connection can support, leaving headroom for normal network variation. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats for viewers, so you do not need to encode every viewer rendition yourself. If the visual is simple, consider whether a lower supported resolution is adequate, but use the corresponding bitrate row rather than guessing.
Build and validate the FFmpeg workflow
There is no single command that can be responsibly presented as guaranteed 24/7 configuration without knowing the installed FFmpeg version, input format, playlist design, and host environment. Start from the official FFmpeg documentation for your build and YouTube’s current ingest settings. Configure the input or playlist to provide the intended continuous program, encode to the selected compatible settings, and send output to the YouTube server URL with the stream key.

- Verify that every media file can be decoded and that audio and video remain synchronized.
- Test playlist order and transitions; looping an input does not establish gapless music playback.
- Confirm that the output bitrate, codec, frame rate, and keyframe interval match the settings selected for YouTube.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during a sustained rehearsal rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s initial connection message.
- Test source completion and an intentional network interruption before treating the setup as unattended.
Plan recovery and monitoring separately from looping
A continuous broadcast can fail at several distinct points: the playlist can end or contain a bad file, FFmpeg can exit, the host can restart, the network can drop, or YouTube ingest can become unavailable. A loop addresses only media repetition.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes network-output recovery options including attempt_recovery, a configurable interval between attempts, a maximum attempt count, and recover_any_error. It also documents drop_pkts_on_overflow: output may continue without delaying input, but packets can be omitted. Recovery is not a promise of uninterrupted playback, and lost packets can mean a gap or missing part of the program.

Design for visibility as well as reconnection. Monitor the FFmpeg process and YouTube Live Control Room, and use a process supervisor or equivalent operational method if the host must restart FFmpeg after an exit. The FFmpeg documentation does not validate one particular supervisor configuration for your setup. Rehearse the exact recovery path, including what happens after a host restart and whether the YouTube stream remains usable.
Understand YouTube’s 12-hour archive condition
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A single broadcast intended to run continuously for 24 hours or longer falls outside that stated automatic-archive condition. Treat keeping the live stream running and preserving a replay as separate requirements: check current Live Control Room behavior and arrange separate recording or archive handling if a complete program record matters.

Clear rights for the music and visuals
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including content appearing in other broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A claim can also be made on an archived live stream after the broadcast ends, according to YouTube Help’s copyright guidance for live streams.
A license and Content ID allowlisting are not the same thing. YouTube warns that even licensed content can lead to a live interruption unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel, and confirm that the permission covers the actual use: continuous live broadcasting, the relevant territories, and any associated replay or recording. Secure rights to visual artwork and other assets as well as the music. Labels such as “synthwave” or “royalty-free,” attribution, or a license by itself do not guarantee that Content ID will leave the stream uninterrupted.
