You can store your videos in Backblaze B2, but B2 by itself does not broadcast them to YouTube. To keep a channel live without a home PC, pair B2 storage with an always-on cloud encoder or managed streaming service that retrieves the videos and sends a continuous feed to YouTube. Before choosing a service, confirm that it can access your B2 files; a direct B2 connection has not been established for the services discussed here.
What each part of the setup does
Think of the workflow as three separate jobs: B2 stores the documentary files, a cloud service or remote server plays and encodes them continuously, and YouTube receives the live feed through its ingest URL and stream key. The encoder must stay available even when your own computer is off.
- Backblaze B2: Stores your source videos as objects. It offers a Native API and an S3-compatible API; the S3-compatible option generally fits a wider range of tools unless you need a B2-specific feature.
- Cloud playback and encoding: Fetches the source video or playlist, produces the live stream in the format you configure, and reconnects or restarts when needed.
- YouTube Live: Accepts the encoded stream at its ingest endpoint. You provide the stream URL and a stream key through the encoder or service.
Backblaze’s Live Read feature concerns reading parts of an object while its multipart upload is still in progress. It is not a substitute for an encoder and does not make B2 an independent YouTube broadcaster.

Prepare the B2 library and credentials
Organize the source files
Upload the finished videos you intend to loop to a dedicated bucket or a clearly organized location in an existing bucket. Keep the originals and any versions prepared for streaming distinguishable. Before configuring playback, confirm that the cloud service or server can retrieve the exact files and that its input workflow supports your intended playlist or rotation.
Create a restricted application key
Backblaze recommends scoped application keys for production use and documents restrictions by bucket and access type. Create a key with only the access the playback workflow needs, scoped to the relevant bucket where possible. Do not put a master key in a public configuration, script repository, shared document, or logs. Store credentials in the service’s protected secret settings or an equivalent server-side secret store, and revoke the key if it is exposed or no longer needed.

If the provider cannot fetch private B2 objects using a scoped key, ask what secure transfer method it supports. Do not make a private library public merely to avoid configuring authentication.
Configure the cloud playback and YouTube stream
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to Google / YouTube Help. Do not schedule a launch on the assumption that activation will be immediate.
- Create or select the YouTube stream configuration. In YouTube Studio, obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run. Enter them only in the cloud encoder or service’s protected settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a public playlist URL, or place it in screenshots. Use a persistent key only if the provider’s documented workflow calls for it, and verify the current YouTube Studio controls.
- Set the output format in the encoder. Choose a protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate supported by both YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your service. Use the bitrate recommendation for that exact codec and output resolution rather than guessing or copying a value from a different configuration. YouTube’s guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Point playback at the source. Configure the service to retrieve the B2 object or the copy you transferred, then set the playlist or repeat behavior. If it requires a file URL, confirm whether it accepts authenticated B2 access; do not assume a private object URL will work as a permanent, secure source.
- Run a representative test before scheduling the channel. Test the actual audio, motion, resolution, and playlist transitions you plan to broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health while the encoder is running and fix any warnings before relying on the feed continuously.
- Document recovery steps. Record how to restart playback, refresh or re-enter credentials safely, and check the B2 source if a file stops playing. For self-managed compute, also configure monitoring and a restart plan for the encoder and server; a process that stops silently is not a 24/7 setup.

Estimate the full cost, not just B2 storage
Backblaze’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists B2 storage at $6.95 per TB per month, with the first 10 GB free. In the described pay-as-you-go terms, egress is free up to three times average monthly storage and costs $0.01 per GB above that allowance. Backblaze also describes unlimited free egress through certain CDN and compute partners. Rates, partner eligibility, and plan terms can change, so confirm the live pricing for your account and route before estimating a recurring channel cost.

Your total depends on the stored library size, how often and how much the encoder retrieves, API transaction patterns, B2 region and routing, and the price of the streaming subscription or remote compute. Include any transcoding charges if your setup changes the source format. A long-running channel also depends on reliable playback, recovery, and monitoring—not just a bucket with enough storage.

Before looping documentaries, verify that you have the rights to stream every film, soundtrack, image, and other included material on YouTube. A file being stored in B2, publicly accessible, or available under a particular license does not by itself establish that your channel has permission to rebroadcast it; check the license terms for your intended use and territory.

Continuous streaming alone does not establish monetization eligibility or guarantee revenue or watch-hour outcomes. A provider’s guide notes that channel acceptance and content review still apply, but that is not a substitute for current YouTube policy.
