- September 28, 2025: The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl LX halftime headliner. The game was scheduled for February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, with NBC carrying the broadcast. The NFL’s announcement identified him as the performer.
- Early October 2025: Conservative criticism focused on his Spanish-language music and political views. President Donald Trump called the selection “absolutely ridiculous,” according to an Associated Press report republished by NFL.com.
- October 9–10, 2025: Turning Point USA announced The All American Halftime Show as counterprogramming. Its initial announcement framed the event around “faith, family and freedom” but did not name performers. The Washington Post’s coverage quoted the group’s announcement.
- October 22, 2025: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was not considering replacing Bad Bunny. He described the decision as “carefully thought through” and said the NFL was confident the show could be a “united moment.”
- February 8, 2026: Bad Bunny performed during Super Bowl LX. Later reporting on TPUSA’s alternative identified Kid Rock and Brantley Gilbert among its performers; that information was not part of the group’s initial announcement. The Associated Press’s account of Bad Bunny’s performance described its references to the Americas and its unity messages.
Why Bad Bunny’s selection drew criticism
The objections documented in coverage were varied, not a single position shared by all conservatives or Trump supporters. Critics objected to the Spanish-language music, Bad Bunny’s criticism of Trump and immigration policies, and his gender-fluid fashion. Others questioned whether he was American or whether a Spanish-language performance belonged at the Super Bowl.
Bad Bunny’s decision to avoid mainland U.S. tour dates also became part of the debate. He said he was concerned that immigration enforcement activity at concerts could put fans at risk. That concern was tied to the wider dispute over immigration policy; it did not change his citizenship. Bad Bunny is from Puerto Rico, and Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. How the NFL answered the backlash

What was Turning Point USA’s All American Halftime Show?
Turning Point USA, the conservative organization, announced The All American Halftime Show as a concurrent alternative to the NFL’s official performance. The group used “faith, family and freedom” to describe its framing. Early announcement coverage said performer details would follow; later reporting named Kid Rock and Brantley Gilbert among the participants. It was counterprogramming, not a replacement for the NFL’s halftime show.
What Bad Bunny’s halftime performance communicated
In its account published February 9, the Associated Press reported that Bad Bunny began with “God Bless America” and named countries across the Americas, including the United States and Canada. A screen displayed “The only thing more powerful than hate is love,” and he held a football reading “Together, we are America.”

Those choices gave the show a wider hemispheric frame for the word “America,” rather than treating it as a reference only to the United States. AP’s report connected the performance’s closing gestures to unity. That interpretation helps explain why the show became part of a dispute about language, national identity and cultural representation, rather than simply a disagreement about musical taste.
