You can send a live camera feed from a Synology NAS to YouTube using Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature. That documented route is for cameras—not a playlist of prerecorded videos. For stored videos, a separate encoder or streaming application must read the NAS files and send a continuous stream to YouTube. The right setup depends on which source you mean, your NAS model, and your DSM and Surveillance Station versions.
First decide what “24/7 channel” means
| What you want to broadcast | What to use | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| A live IP-camera feed | Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast application | Synology documents sending a selected live camera stream to YouTube. It requires a YouTube RTMP path and stream key and supports H.264 video. Synology’s Live Broadcast help describes the feature as a way to send live camera streams. |
| Prerecorded videos stored on the NAS | A separate encoder or streaming application | Synology’s documented Live Broadcast feature does not establish playlist looping or prerecorded-media broadcast. Confirm that a chosen encoder can access the NAS files and run continuously on your particular setup. |
Video Station is for managing and streaming video collections to supported client devices; that does not make it a YouTube live-stream publisher. Synology’s DSM 7.2 Video Station specification also says Video Station is unavailable on DSM 7.2.2.
What to check before configuring the NAS
- Identify your exact NAS model, installed DSM version, Surveillance Station version, and whether the Live Broadcast application is available for that combination. Synology’s Live Broadcast help is version 8; menu labels and availability can vary.
- For a camera feed, check that the camera is supported by your NAS and Surveillance Station, and that it can provide a suitable H.264 stream. Synology’s Surveillance Station compatibility list can help verify camera compatibility.
- For either workflow, confirm the internet connection can sustain the chosen upload bitrate, and test before relying on a continuous broadcast. A NAS storing or playing a video does not by itself establish that it can encode and transmit it reliably.
Synology’s broader Surveillance Station specifications list RTMP over TCP among supported streaming tunnel formats and describe Live Broadcast as sending camera streams to YouTube. Those specifications are for DSM 7.4; package availability and performance are not necessarily identical across NAS models.
Set up a camera feed with Surveillance Station
Synology’s documented camera-to-YouTube route is Live Broadcast. The exact menu wording can vary by package version, so use the installed package’s help if a label differs.

- Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream you intend to use and obtain its server/ingest path and stream key. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or publish it.
- Enable Live Broadcast. In Surveillance Station, open the Live Broadcast application and set its status to on, following Synology’s version 8 setup guide.
- Enter the YouTube connection details. Enter the RTMP path and stream key as requested by the Synology application. The cited Synology instructions specify RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general live ingestion, but do not assume this particular Synology feature accepts an RTMPS endpoint in every version.
- Select the source. Choose the camera and stream profile to broadcast. Synology says Live Broadcast supports H.264 video; confirm the selected profile uses H.264 and is appropriate for your network’s upload capacity.
- Start the broadcast and verify it. Confirm the camera is reaching YouTube and check the stream preview and health indicators in YouTube Studio. Keep an eye on the stream after starting rather than assuming a successful initial connection guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Choose YouTube encoder settings for a continuous stream
If your encoder exposes output settings, use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. Do not reuse one bitrate number for every quality setting. YouTube’s table lists 4 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps; that is one row, not a universal target.
- Upload capacity: Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom for normal fluctuations. Set the output bitrate to a level the connection can sustain continuously.
- Rate control: YouTube advises using constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps; choose a rate your source and encoder can actually provide steadily.
- Test and monitor: Test with representative audio and motion before depending on the stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while it is live.
YouTube also supports HLS ingest for compatible encoders. Its HLS ingest guidance explains that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments and requires specific playlist and segment settings. HLS is an option only if the separate encoder supports and is configured for it; it is not established as a capability of Synology Live Broadcast.

Broadcast prerecorded videos stored on the NAS
For a playlist of documentaries or other prerecorded material, treat the NAS as file storage and use a separate encoder or streaming application as the publisher. Before settling on a particular application or container, verify all of these on your NAS and software versions:
- It can read the NAS media path, including the permissions and network mount or share configuration in use.
- It can loop or schedule the intended videos without stopping at the end of a file or playlist.
- It can encode YouTube-compatible video and audio at settings the internet connection can sustain.
- It can reconnect after a network interruption and resume the intended playback behavior.
- It can run on the NAS hardware and software combination you own, with enough compute capacity for the selected encoding settings.
The available Synology documentation establishes the camera broadcast route, not a verified NAS-native package for continuously publishing prerecorded playlists to YouTube. Do not assume that a media library app’s ability to play files to a client also means it can publish a live stream.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Use only footage and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A stream being prerecorded, looped, or hosted on your own NAS does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether the encoder connects successfully; check the rights and policies that apply to your channel and material before scheduling a long-running stream. For a practical rights review, use the copyright safety checklist.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | RTMP path, stream key, YouTube event state, and whether Live Broadcast is enabled | Recheck the exact path and key in YouTube Studio and the Synology application. If you regenerated the key, update the saved value in the NAS. |
| Video fails or is incompatible | Selected camera/profile and video codec | Confirm the profile uses H.264, as required by Synology’s Live Broadcast guidance, and check camera compatibility for your NAS/package setup. |
| Stream health is poor or playback buffers | Actual sustained upload capacity versus the configured bitrate | Use YouTube’s encoder table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec; reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again. |
| Stream disconnects during a long run | Network stability and behavior after a dropped connection | Monitor YouTube stream health and verify reconnect behavior in the specific package or encoder you use. The cited Synology and YouTube documentation does not establish guaranteed uninterrupted uptime. |
| A prerecorded playlist will not publish as a live stream | Whether the selected application is only a local media player | Use a separate encoder verified to read NAS files, loop or schedule them, encode for YouTube, and recover from interruptions. |
