The important catch is that a continuous broadcast lasting 12 hours or more may not become a complete YouTube archive: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the VOD matters, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording.
Choose what “now playing” should show
First decide what information the label is meant to display. A song title, a game title, and a manually updated session label are different jobs: the overlay can show only information its data source can access.
- Music metadata: A hosted music overlay may update track information automatically, but check which player or DJ software it supports. Now Playing documents a workflow in which its desktop app connects to DJ software; that does not establish that it can detect arbitrary system audio or identify the game currently on screen. - Game title or session status: Use a provider or workflow that can actually read that information, or use a text label you update yourself. Do not assume a music overlay detects game titles.
For a hosted overlay, configure the service and copy its browser-source URL. Treat an account-specific URL as private. Now Playing says a leaked URL can be reset, which disables the old URL; you then need to replace it in OBS. Details: customizing the overlay and the dashboard.
Add the overlay in OBS
- Open the output scene. In OBS, select the scene that contains the gameplay and is used for the YouTube stream.
- Create the Browser Source. In Sources, select + → Browser, create a source, and paste the overlay URL. OBS Browser Source places a webpage in a scene; OBS documents it as a common way to add overlays and chat boxes. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Set the dimensions. Use the overlay provider’s recommended width and height. Now Playing gives 1920×1080 as its standard 1080p example and says to match a different canvas when applicable. If your output canvas differs, follow the provider’s instructions for that canvas rather than assuming the example is universal. See its setup guide and dashboard guidance.
- Layer and position it. Put the Browser Source above gameplay in the Sources stack so it is visible. Use the OBS preview and source transforms to position and resize it. Keep it clear of the game’s HUD, subtitles, and important action; Now Playing suggests a bottom position for gaming layouts, but the right placement depends on the game. - Check the update behavior. Test the overlay in the OBS preview. Now Playing documents a simulated-track Test control; confirm the label and any artwork update as expected. If the page looks stuck, its documentation recommends refreshing the Browser Source.
- Verify the encoded result. Make a local recording or run a private or unlisted test stream if you need to confirm exactly what viewers will see. Check that the overlay is legible at the intended output size and does not cover essential gameplay. A preview alone does not establish how the final stream or archive will look.

Plan the 24/7 stream around YouTube’s archive limit
A 24/7 channel and a single uninterrupted 24-hour VOD are not the same thing. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. This is an operational limit, not a guarantee that every stream under 12 hours will produce an archive. Read YouTube Help’s guidance on archiving live streams.
If you need durable VODs, schedule shorter sessions comfortably below 12 hours, end each session cleanly, and retain a local recording. After each session, confirm that YouTube’s archive is available and that the overlay appears correctly. The documentation does not guarantee capture even below the threshold.

Consider live DVR separately from the finished archive. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast; that does not by itself determine whether a recording will later be available. See YouTube Help on DVR for live streams.
Music metadata does not grant music rights
If your overlay names a song, displaying the title or artist does not give you permission to broadcast the track. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights; archived content is also subject to the applicable agreement. Check YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and make sure your music use is authorized. Attribution in the overlay is not a substitute for rights.

Fix common overlay problems
- Nothing appears: Check that the Browser Source URL is correct, the source is enabled, and it sits above the gameplay source. Confirm the width and height follow the provider’s instructions.
- The overlay is visible in OBS but not in the intended composition: Inspect the selected scene and source ordering, then reposition the source in the preview. Make a local recording or test stream to verify the encoded output.
- The track label does not change: Confirm the service supports the software supplying the metadata and that its desktop app is connected as required. Now Playing documents DJ software integration, not universal game or system-audio detection. Try its simulated-track Test action and refresh the Browser Source if it appears stuck.
- The overlay covers gameplay information: Move it away from the HUD and other essential elements. A suggested bottom position is only a starting point; preview the specific game layout.
- You changed or exposed the URL: If the provider offers URL reset, follow its instructions and update OBS with the replacement. Now Playing says resetting a leaked URL disables the old one.
- The expected long VOD is missing or incomplete: Check session length. YouTube warns that broadcasts exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; use shorter sessions and local recordings for future archives.
