To keep a 24/7 waterfall stream from peaking, control the audio in the actual program feed: check its level in OBS, avoid gain that pushes it to 0 dBFS, and put an OBS Limiter last in the audio filter chain. Test the same waterfall footage and sound you plan to broadcast, then monitor the live stream. A limiter caps peaks; it does not set a universal ideal loudness for ambience.
Prepare the video, audio, and YouTube connection
Use a continuous or looping waterfall video and make sure you have the rights needed to use both its picture and sound. To send it live, connect an encoder to YouTube using the server URL and stream key in YouTube’s encoder setup (YouTube Help: Set up your live stream encoder). Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
You can run an encoder locally, or use a cloud service designed to keep prerecorded video streaming continuously. In either case, audio treatment must be applied to the feed that reaches YouTube, and the broadcast should be tested and monitored.
Keep the signal below digital clipping
Digital clipping occurs when audio reaches or exceeds the 0 dBFS ceiling. OBS identifies its mixer bars as peak meters and advises keeping streamed or recorded audio below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion (OBS: Audio Mixer).

- In OBS, start playback of the actual waterfall source and watch its mixer meter. Check the loudest splashes, not only the average sound.
- If the signal approaches or reaches the top of the meter, reduce the source or mixer level. Do not add gain to make quiet ambience louder if that pushes peaks into clipping.
- Listen to the feed as well as watching the meter. The meter helps identify peak level, but it cannot tell you whether the sound is pleasant, distorted earlier in the chain, or interrupted at a loop seam.
Add a limiter as the final peak ceiling
In OBS, open the waterfall audio source’s Filters, add a Limiter, and place it after the other filters. OBS says the limiter should be last in the filter chain because it prevents the signal from exceeding its threshold (OBS: Limiter Filter).
OBS documents a threshold of -6.00 dB and a release of 60 ms as the limiter’s defaults. These are starting defaults for the filter, not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed best setting for every recording. A limiter ceiling also does not specify how loud the waterfall should sound overall; listen to the result and avoid making the stream unnecessarily loud or dynamically harsh.

When a compressor may help
If the recording’s level varies substantially, a compressor earlier in the chain can reduce the likelihood of large peaks before they reach the limiter. OBS recommends putting a compressor near the beginning of the chain; the limiter remains last as the final maximum-level control (OBS: Compressor Filter). A steady ambience recording may not need compression, so do not add it automatically.
Choose encoder audio settings without confusing them with loudness
YouTube’s recommended advanced RTMP/RTMPS settings include AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 128 kbps for stereo (YouTube Help: Encoder settings for live streaming). These are audio format and transmission settings, not a loudness target. YouTube’s cited guidance does not set an integrated LUFS target or a universal true-peak ceiling for waterfall ambience. Keep the OBS signal below 0 dBFS and judge the sound by listening; do not treat the limiter’s -6 dB default as a required YouTube level.

Test the whole stream before leaving it on
YouTube recommends tests with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream and advises monitoring stream audio and video quality while live (YouTube Help: Live streaming tips; YouTube Help: Encoder settings for live streaming).
- Run the intended waterfall video and sound through the complete OBS chain, including the limiter.
- Preview or conduct a private/unlisted test, where appropriate, and listen for sharp splashes, distortion, silence, level jumps, and abrupt changes at the loop seam.
- Check the OBS peak meter during the loudest passages and confirm the live preview or playback sounds clean.
- Once live, keep a plan to check stream health and audio/video quality rather than assuming a long-running broadcast cannot fail.
Plan for continuity and the archive
A local encoder gives you direct control over OBS filters, but it depends on the computer, power, and internet connection staying available. A cloud-based continuous-streaming service avoids keeping a home computer running, though you still need to consider how you will monitor the stream and confirm the provider’s current capabilities and availability.

Do not assume a single 24-hour YouTube broadcast will be fully archived automatically. YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish a complete automatic archive for an uninterrupted 24-hour stream (YouTube Help: Set up your live stream encoder). If preserving the complete program matters, arrange a separate recording or archive workflow and verify it before relying on it.
