How to Stop Raspberry Pi Thermal Throttling During an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Find out whether heat is really throttling your Raspberry Pi during an FFmpeg YouTube stream, then reduce encoding load and improve cooling without guessing.

First confirm the Pi is actually throttling while FFmpeg is streaming; a high temperature or dropped frames alone does not prove heat is the cause. Raspberry Pi progressively throttles Arm cores between 80°C and 85°C and throttles Arm and GPU frequencies at 85°C. Check temperature and throttling flags during a representative stream, rule out undervoltage and other bottlenecks, then reduce encoding load and improve airflow before choosing compatible cooling.

Confirm that thermal throttling is happening

Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation defines 85°C as the SoC temperature limit. From 80°C to 85°C, Arm cores are progressively throttled; at 85°C, Arm and GPU frequencies are throttled. These controls protect the board, but can reduce performance. The same documentation warns that a supply voltage below the specified threshold can also trigger throttling, so do not assume every throttle event is thermal. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation

Measure during the stream, not just at idle

Run these checks while FFmpeg is handling the same source and settings that produce the problem:

  • vcgencmd measure_temp reports the current SoC temperature. Raspberry Pi describes this GPU-mediated reading as an accurate instantaneous temperature reading.
  • vcgencmd get_throttled reports throttling flags on supported systems. Interpret the flags against documentation for your board and software version; the output is not by itself a diagnosis of why frames were lost.
  • cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp reads the Linux thermal-zone value in millidegrees Celsius; divide by 1,000 for Celsius. Raspberry Pi cautions that Linux-based temperature readings can be inaccurate on some architectures.

Record temperature and throttling state periodically during a representative stream, then compare with idle readings. If clocks fall or performance degrades without a corresponding temperature rise, check the supply and undervoltage state. A single reading may miss intermittent behavior.

Separate heat from other bottlenecks

Dropped frames can result from encoding load, input decoding, slow storage, insufficient upload bandwidth, or interactions among them. Compare FFmpeg’s behavior with the Pi’s temperature and throttle state, and check YouTube’s stream health rather than treating temperature as the only clue. A hot board is not proof that heat caused a particular frame drop.

Reduce FFmpeg’s workload without breaking the stream

There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for an unspecified Pi: the model, FFmpeg build, source format, resolution, frame rate, and encoder support all matter. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance paper illustrates different routes: software encoding with libx264 on Raspberry Pi 5, and the h264_v4l2m2m hardware encoder in its Raspberry Pi 4 comparison. Do not assume the Pi 4 hardware-encoding path is available on a Pi 5 or on every software build. Raspberry Pi H.264 performance paper

Check the board and installed encoders

  1. Identify the exact Raspberry Pi model. Encoder availability and cooling compatibility differ by generation.
  2. Inspect the installed FFmpeg build. Run ffmpeg -encoders and look for the encoders supported by that build. Verify that the selected encoder accepts your input pixel format; availability in a general guide does not guarantee support on your system.
  3. Test a representative encode before going live. Use the actual input and intended stream settings, then monitor temperature, throttling state, and whether the encode sustains the required frame rate.

Tune one load factor at a time

  1. Start with the source resolution and frame rate. If the Pi cannot sustain them, try lowering resolution or frame rate one step at a time and assess the visible quality change.
  2. If using libx264, test a less demanding preset. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 example uses ultrafast with the zerolatency tune for a low-latency software configuration. Less encoding complexity can lower load, but quality and latency trade-offs depend on the source and settings.
  3. Test a hardware-encoder route only if your board and build support it. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but available formats and behavior vary; confirm the complete pipeline with your real input.
  4. Keep upload headroom. Encoding successfully on the Pi does not guarantee the network can deliver the stream reliably. Test the connection and watch YouTube’s stream health before relying on the settings.

Keep YouTube ingest settings in view

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular Pi can encode at those settings. Choose a quality level the specific board can sustain and that fits the available upload bandwidth; consult YouTube’s current guidance when configuring a stream. YouTube live encoder settings

Improve airflow and add cooling if throttling persists

Fix avoidable encoding load first, then address the physical setup if monitoring shows persistent thermal throttling. Raspberry Pi identifies high ambient temperatures, sustained workloads, airtight enclosures, and more extreme overclocking as situations where extra cooling can be useful. Video processing can impose a sustained compute load. Its guidance says airflow over a heatsink makes it more effective, and that a heatsink or small fan can reduce throttling and improve performance. Work from simple changes to active cooling

  • Improve ventilation. Move the Pi out of an enclosed or obstructed space and make sure vents are not blocked. Orientation and unobstructed airflow can help.
  • Consider a compatible heatsink. A passive heatsink has no fan noise or fan power draw, but its effectiveness depends on airflow and sustained workload.
  • Consider an active fan for confirmed sustained throttling. A fan can move air across the board and heatsink, but adds noise and needs a suitable power and case arrangement.
  • Check board and case fit before buying. Cooling accessories are not interchangeable across all Pi models and enclosures. Match the cooler to the exact board and case rather than assuming a product fit.

Raspberry Pi’s 2023 Pi 5 article reports that passive cooling may be insufficient in the article’s heavy stress-test context, including sustained loads beyond 200 or 300 seconds. That is not a universal time limit for every Pi or an FFmpeg YouTube stream. Likewise, Raspberry Pi 4 Case Fan guidance concerns Pi 4 and its stated operating conditions; do not transfer a product recommendation between generations without checking compatibility. Raspberry Pi 5 article · Raspberry Pi 4 Case Fan article

Do not raise the thermal limit or treat overclocking as a cooling fix. The limit is protective, and nonstandard overclock settings can have consequences. Diagnose the throttle state, reduce avoidable load, improve ventilation, and add model-compatible cooling if the sustained workload still triggers thermal throttling.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

What you observe What to check What to try
Temperature reaches the documented throttle range while FFmpeg runs Compare readings and throttling flags during the stream with idle behavior. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or software-encoding complexity; improve airflow; then consider compatible cooling if throttling persists.
Clock or performance drops, but temperature is below the thermal range Check throttling flags and power-supply or undervoltage status. Investigate the supply and board state rather than assuming a fan will solve it.
Frames drop, but no thermal throttling is observed Check input decoding, storage, FFmpeg load, upload capacity, and YouTube stream health. Test each part of the pipeline; lower encoding demands or stream settings only after identifying a plausible bottleneck.
Hardware encoder is missing or rejects the input Confirm the board generation, FFmpeg build, encoder list, and pixel-format support. Use an encoder the installed pipeline supports or change the input format if appropriate; do not copy a command intended for another Pi generation.
Adding a cooler does not resolve the problem Confirm the cooler fits the board and case, has airflow, and addresses a measured thermal throttle rather than another cause. Return to workload, power, storage, and network checks; cooling cannot correct unrelated bottlenecks.
