You can run a continuous study-music stream by preparing a video with your music and visual, looping that file with FFmpeg, and sending it to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The loop keeps the media repeating; it does not keep a crashed FFmpeg process or failed internet connection running. Before leaving the stream unattended, test the full setup and confirm you have rights for both the live broadcast and any replay.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours; this is an estimate, not a guarantee. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance
  • A computer that can run FFmpeg, a stable upstream internet connection, and enough upload capacity for the complete video bitrate.
  • A prepared video file containing the study visual and playlist audio, or a tested method of assembling compatible tracks into one file.
  • Music and visual rights that cover the intended public livestream and, if you want one, its archived replay.

Check your installed build with ffmpeg -version. FFmpeg’s online documentation may differ from your build; confirm it supports the required H.264 encoder and RTMPS protocol.

Enable YouTube Live and get the stream credentials

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. If the channel has not streamed before, complete YouTube’s enablement and verification requirements first.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. Set a title, description, category, and visibility. For initial checks, choose Unlisted so the test is not broadly discoverable.
  3. In the stream settings, copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions are to enter both into the encoder. The server URL may support RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the ingest connection. YouTube’s encoder streaming setup
  4. Treat the key as a password. Do not put it in a screenshot, public repository, or shared command history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.

Prepare a playlist file that will loop cleanly

Most reliable route: assemble and inspect one video first

For the simplest FFmpeg workflow, create a single compatible video containing the music and the visual—such as a still study image or a subtle animation—then inspect it from beginning to end. Check that audio starts and ends as intended, transitions do not click or cut abruptly, and the visual is yours or licensed for this use. The loop will repeat the entire file, including any silence or transition at its endpoints.

Using separate tracks

Do not assume that unrelated audio files can be joined directly without gaps, format mismatches, or unexpected transitions. You can assemble compatible tracks into one file with your editing workflow, adding intentional crossfades or pauses, or use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when the inputs have compatible stream parameters. The official references cited here establish FFmpeg input looping and RTMP(S) output, not a universal playlist format or seamless-track recipe. Inspect the assembled file and test its loop boundary before using it for a long broadcast.

Run FFmpeg and send the stream

This illustrative command loops one prepared file indefinitely and sends it to YouTube over RTMPS. Replace the example destination with the exact server URL and stream key from Live Control Room; the quoted destination below is a placeholder, not a usable URL.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i study-playlist.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -r 30
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
  • -re paces a file input in real time; -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. Input options belong before the input they affect, which is why both appear before -i. FFmpeg command-line documentation
  • -tune stillimage is intended for a static visual. Remove or change it if the video has motion graphics.
  • At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a keyframe every two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • The 2,500 kbps video bitrate is an example, not a universal setting. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the source artwork and available upstream capacity, then check YouTube’s current recommendations. The command encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz stereo, settings included in YouTube’s general encoder guidance. YouTube live encoder settings
  • -f flv selects the output format commonly used for RTMP(S) ingest. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection; use the secure server address YouTube provides.

FFmpeg does not make the stream 24/7 merely because the input repeats. The process must remain running, the computer must stay on, and the connection must continue to reach YouTube. An infinite media loop does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or recover a failed output connection.

Test the broadcast before making it public

  1. Run the command while the YouTube stream is in test or unlisted mode. Wait for the encoder feed to appear in Live Control Room.
  2. Check the preview for the expected image and motion, listen to the audio, and verify that the level is comfortable and not distorted.
  3. Open the watch page using the intended viewer experience and confirm the stream can be accessed. Resolve any warnings in YouTube’s stream-health display before relying on it.
  4. Check that the first-to-last transition in the media is acceptable and that it returns to the beginning as expected.
  5. Keep the encoder and network running through a meaningful test period. A successful start alone does not show that the machine, process, or connection will remain stable unattended.

Set bandwidth and reliability expectations

YouTube recommends adequate upload bandwidth with room to spare; its streaming tips recommend 20% headroom. Treat that as preparation guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be reliable. Other household or office traffic and backup encoders also use upstream capacity. Check the connection while it is under realistic load, and leave capacity above the combined stream bitrate.

A wired Ethernet connection between the computer and router can remove one variable, but it cannot fix insufficient upstream service, router trouble, or congestion farther along the connection. Plan how you will notice and respond if the computer reboots, FFmpeg exits, or the network fails. YouTube’s stream-health display is useful while monitored; unattended continuity requires a separate restart and recovery plan.

Protect music rights and avoid live interruptions

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use every part of the live content. YouTube’s terms put that responsibility on the creator, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A track being available to listen to, or a license that permits a personal video upload, does not by itself establish permission for a continuous public livestream or its replay. Confirm that the license covers live transmission, relevant territories, and archiving, and keep records of the grant.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A warning may require you to stop the matched content; continuing can lead YouTube to interrupt or terminate the stream. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also terminate a live stream. Even licensed third-party music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. When applicable, ask the rights holder about its allowlist process; allowlisting is an operational step, not a replacement for obtaining the rights. A copyright claim can also arrive on an archived stream after it ends. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams

Plan replays separately from the continuous live feed

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise an automatic archive for a single continuous stream lasting 12 hours or more, so do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete replay. If an archive matters, consider scheduled segments shorter than 12 hours and verify each resulting replay and YouTube’s current behavior. Segmenting improves the fit with the documented archive rule but requires planned starts and restarts. YouTube’s encoder streaming setup

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
No encoder feed appears Incorrect server URL or key, stream not ready in Live Control Room, or RTMPS/protocol support missing from the local FFmpeg build. Copy the current URL and key from the correct stream, confirm the stream is active, and check the installed build with ffmpeg -version. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
FFmpeg reports an encoder or protocol error The local build may not include the requested H.264 encoder or RTMPS support, or an option may not suit the input. Inspect the build’s configuration and available encoders/protocols, then use a compatible build. Verify input and output options against the documentation for that build.
Stream starts but video or audio is missing The prepared file may lack the expected stream, be malformed, or have incompatible media characteristics. Inspect and play the file locally before streaming; confirm the visual and audio are present throughout, then review the YouTube preview and health display.
Stream health warns or playback stalls Upstream bandwidth is insufficient or fluctuating, another device is consuming capacity, or the computer/network is unstable. Compare available upload capacity with the combined stream bitrate, reduce encoding demands if needed, limit competing traffic, and test the connection under load. Ethernet can help isolate Wi-Fi issues but does not create more upstream capacity.
FFmpeg stops and the playlist no longer plays The loop only repeats media while the process and output connection remain active. Inspect the FFmpeg error and the computer/network state, restart the process after correcting the cause, and arrange monitoring or a process-recovery plan for unattended operation.
Music is muted, interrupted, or the stream is terminated A rights match, missing livestream permissions, or a rights holder’s Content ID policy may be involved. Review YouTube’s notice and the license scope. Stop content that YouTube requires you to stop; contact the rights holder about permissions and allowlisting where relevant.
No complete replay is available The stream lasted 12 hours or longer, for which the cited YouTube guidance does not promise automatic archiving. For future broadcasts, plan shorter scheduled segments and verify the archive after each one.

Or let it run in the cloud
