You can run a 24/7 children’s channel in 720p from a modest PC, but resolution alone does not determine whether it will stay live. Choose a simple scene, start at 720p30, configure YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings, and test the actual computer, content and internet connection under sustained load before relying on it. OBS’s minimum requirements are not a guarantee that a particular machine can stream reliably.
What a low-power PC needs to handle
Streaming continuously means decoding and playing the source, rendering the OBS scene, encoding video, sending it over the network and managing heat for long periods. The workload depends on the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record. Check the machine before configuring OBS
- Identify the CPU, integrated or discrete GPU, memory, cooling condition and available hardware encoders.
- Check whether the PC can use a wired network connection and whether its upload connection remains stable over time.
- Remove unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, filters and extra scaling. Each scene element can add work.

Start with a modest output
Set a 1280×720 canvas and output, with 30 fps as a conservative starting point. For slow-moving cartoons, art or slides, 30 fps may be sufficient; consider 60 fps only if fast motion benefits and the specific PC can encode it reliably. This is a workload-conscious starting recommendation, not a performance guarantee for every low-power computer.
Configure OBS and YouTube for 720p
For broad compatibility, use H.264 video over RTMPS with constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends an 8 Mbps H.264 video bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. Choose an encoder based on the actual PC
Compare x264 CPU encoding and any compatible hardware encoder available on the machine. There is no universal winner: check sustained CPU load, output quality at the chosen bitrate, heat and stability with the real content. Hardware encoding is not mandatory, and not every low-power processor includes a compatible encoder. OBS notes that workload varies by encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. Leave network headroom
The connection needs to carry the video bitrate, audio and normal network variation. YouTube advises selecting a quality reliable for the internet connection, testing with representative audio and motion, and watching stream health. A speed test is only a snapshot; a wired connection is a practical preference where available, not a YouTube requirement. The sources do not specify one universal extra upload margin, so validate the line you will actually use.

Set up the channel and protect the stream key
- Verify that the YouTube channel is eligible to stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube live streaming getting started
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Set its title, description, privacy and audience accurately.
- Copy the stream key from the Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings, using the YouTube ingest server specified there. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Start with an unlisted test. Confirm that video, sound, movement, stream health and OBS statistics look stable before switching to public operation.
Test the full setup before calling it 24/7
Run the actual looping content and audio for multiple hours. Observe OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages; look for dropped frames, encoding lag, overheating, audio gaps, source freezes and connection interruptions. Plan for restarts and failures
- Write down how to restart OBS and reconnect the stream after a source freeze, encoder failure or network interruption.
- Test whether the PC restarts cleanly and whether OBS and the stream recover as expected before enabling any automatic reboot behavior.
- A UPS may bridge a brief power interruption, but size it for the measured load and the ride-through or shutdown time you need. It will not prevent internet outages, PC failures or YouTube downtime.
Decide whether to record locally
YouTube may not capture a live stream that exceeds 12 hours and recommends keeping a local archive backup. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete YouTube replay. If a replay matters, plan shorter broadcasts and/or local recording, while testing the added storage, disk activity and encoding load on the PC. YouTube live stream archive guidance

Get children’s content and rights right
Choose the audience designation accurately
YouTube requires creators to designate whether each video or live stream is made for kids; its guidance says not to rely on automated detection to make that decision. Made-for-kids content has features restricted or unavailable, including live chat, comments on archives, notifications and personalized advertising. Clear every video and audio element
You need the rights to broadcast every looped clip, song and other included material. A copyright match or policy violation can lead to takedowns or live-stream restrictions, including matches to another copyrighted live broadcast.
