You can stream 4K at 60 frames per second to YouTube Live from a VPS if it can encode or relay the video in real time and sustain the required outbound bitrate. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC/AV1 at 2160p60; those are media-bitrate recommendations, not VPS specifications. For a typical low-latency stream, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, then test the complete setup before going live.

What a VPS must do for 4K60

A 4K60 stream is 3840×2160 progressive video delivered at 60 frames per second. The VPS must either encode the incoming source at that rate or send an already encoded stream, and it must sustain outbound delivery to YouTube. Choosing 4K in an encoder does not prove the server can keep up: performance depends on the input, codec, preset, filters, and available CPU or GPU encoding.

YouTube does not publish a universal CPU, GPU, or RAM specification for VPS-based 4K60 encoding. No particular VPS size can be guaranteed for an unspecified source. Benchmark the actual workload and network route you plan to use.

Choose a YouTube ingest protocol

RTMPS for most live events

For an ordinary stream where latency matters, start with RTMPS. YouTube describes it as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency, and RTMPS encrypts RTMP delivery. Use a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application path, and make sure outbound TCP port 443 is allowed. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and protocol comparison.

HLS when HEVC or HDR support matters more than latency

HLS can be appropriate when the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements and HEVC or HDR is a priority. The documented format uses M2TS segments, AAC audio, and a closed GOP; video may use H.264 or HEVC at up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends segments between one and four seconds, with a maximum of five seconds. HLS is segmented and usually has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC. Check the HLS ingestion guide before configuring an encoder.

YouTube also lists DASH as an ingest option, but it is not necessary for this basic VPS workflow. Ingest protocols describe how a creator sends video to YouTube; they are not the formats YouTube necessarily uses to deliver playback to viewers.

Set the video, bitrate, and audio

4K60 bitrate targets

YouTube Help’s current recommendations for 2160p60 are shown below. These are YouTube encoder settings, not a guarantee of a particular visual result, a VPS plan specification, or a required network contract. The minimum figures are not the recommended targets for planning a high-quality stream.

Codec YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-recommended bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
HEVC/H.265 or AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

Source: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” (publication year not stated on the consulted page). Plan for outbound capacity above the selected video bitrate to leave room for audio and network variability. Check the VPS provider’s sustained egress capability and any transfer limits; a nominal connection speed alone may not establish what the server can sustain.

Rate control, keyframes, and resolution

  • Set output to 3840×2160 progressive at 60 fps.
  • Use CBR rate control for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Set keyframes every two seconds and do not exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, a two-second interval is a 120-frame GOP when the encoder expresses GOP length in frames.
  • Use a supported codec and confirm the chosen VPS encoder can sustain the required frame rate with the selected preset and filters.

YouTube’s API recognizes 2160p and 60 fps as explicit ingest settings, and it can also detect resolution and frame rate automatically when both are set to variable. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default; a custom stream key supports manual selection. See the LiveStreams API documentation.

Audio and color

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo as recommended audio settings. Rec. 709 is listed for SDR. For HDR, YouTube recommends HEVC in these settings and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm that your encoder’s audio and color settings match the source and intended output. Full settings are in YouTube Help.

Configure the VPS and YouTube stream

  1. Identify the input. Establish whether the VPS receives an already encoded 4K60 file/feed or must resize and encode raw or compressed input. Encoding requirements vary substantially with that choice.
  2. Select and test the VPS/encoder combination. Run the actual source with the intended codec, preset, filters, and hardware acceleration, if used. Verify it can sustain at least 60 encoded frames per second at 3840×2160 without falling behind. No universal instance size is established by YouTube’s documentation.
  3. Check outbound capacity. Confirm sustained egress and provider transfer limits against your selected media bitrate, with headroom for audio and variability. YouTube’s bitrate guidance is not a recommendation for a particular VPS plan.
  4. Prepare the YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream or use the ingestion fields from an API-created stream. Select RTMPS for the ordinary low-latency workflow, and obtain the valid endpoint/path and stream key. Keep the key private: do not put it in public scripts, logs, or screenshots.
  5. Set the encoder output. Configure 3840×2160, 60 fps, a supported codec, CBR, and two-second keyframes. For RTMPS, set the correct YouTube endpoint and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s RTMPS guide specifies the protocol, valid endpoint/application path, and port 443.
  6. Run a controlled test. Send a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled stream using representative movement and audio. Check the YouTube stream-health indicators before making the event public.

Do not assume that a command copied from another VPS will work unchanged. The right FFmpeg command depends on the input, installed FFmpeg build, available software or hardware encoder, RTMPS transport support, and destination URL format. Confirm those details on the deployed server and validate the output rather than relying on a generic command.

Test and troubleshoot before the event

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Its API diagnostics include low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, keyframe/GOP problems, missing audio, and video-ingestion starvation. The LiveStreams documentation describes health status and configuration diagnostics.

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Low-bitrate warning or unstable delivery Encoder target, sustained VPS egress, provider limits, or network route Check the configured bitrate and measure sustained upload from the VPS. Ensure egress has headroom beyond video bitrate for audio and variability; confirm provider transfer or bandwidth limits.
Frame-rate mismatch or video-ingestion starvation Encoder cannot keep pace, input stalls, or processing load is too high Inspect encoder performance with the real source and settings. Check that the input continues and the VPS sustains 60 fps; test the intended preset and filters.
GOP or keyframe warning Keyframe interval does not match YouTube guidance Set the interval to two seconds and keep it at or below four seconds. At 60 fps, verify a 120-frame GOP when the encoder uses frame counts.
Missing audio Audio track not connected, unsupported output setting, or incorrect muxing Confirm the input has an audio track and RTMP/RTMPS output uses AAC or MP3. Test audio during the controlled stream.
RTMPS connection fails Incorrect endpoint or application path, invalid key, or blocked egress Recheck the YouTube-provided RTMPS destination and key, confirm the URL uses RTMPS, and allow outbound TCP port 443.
Stream looks soft or breaks up despite selecting 4K Bitrate, source detail, encoding performance, or delivery instability Verify the actual output resolution and frame rate, compare the target with YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation, and inspect stream health and sustained VPS egress.

Copyright and content checks still apply

VPS hosting does not change YouTube’s rules for the material you broadcast. Before scheduling a public stream, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies. A stream can be technically healthy yet still face a copyright claim or other platform restriction.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than configure and maintain a VPS encoder, StreamNeo offers a separate cloud workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera and it streams to YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off.
  • Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
