To stream nature footage at 4K 60fps on YouTube Live, configure an encoder for 3840×2160 progressive video at 60 frames per second, use a supported codec and bitrate, and maintain a stable upstream connection with headroom. For a 24/7 broadcast, the video loop, encoder, network, power, and YouTube session must keep operating—and you need a way to monitor and recover from interruptions.

What you need for a continuous 4K60 stream

A 4K60 live stream is only as dependable as its weakest part: the source file, encoder, upload connection, power, or active YouTube stream session. A 24/7 target is an operating plan, not a guarantee that the stream will never drop.

  • Suitable nature footage: Use a 3840Ă—2160 source if you want genuine 4K output. A 4K encoder setting cannot add detail that is absent from a lower-resolution source.
  • An encoder and playback workflow: The encoder must be able to encode 4K60 and continuously loop or supply the prerecorded footage. YouTube describes both computer software and standalone hardware encoders.
  • Reliable upstream bandwidth: Measure upload capacity under the conditions in which the stream will run, including other people and devices sharing the connection.
  • Continuous operation and oversight: Plan for power, connectivity, stream-health monitoring, and what you will do if the encoder or YouTube session stops.

YouTube’s encoder guide gives a cloud service as an example of a way to stream prerecorded video continuously. That example is not a YouTube endorsement or proof of the service’s current limits: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Enable live streaming and prepare YouTube Studio

  1. Enable live streaming on your channel. If this is your first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that wait before planning a launch: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a scheduled stream or prepare to start one there. Scheduling and reusable stream settings are available in YouTube’s live controls: YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose how prerecorded video will be supplied. For a local setup, select an encoder and configure a playlist or loop that will continuously feed the video. A cloud workflow is another option when you do not want a computer at home to supply the stream.
  4. Copy the stream URL and key from Studio into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it, send it to viewers, or place it in public screenshots.

YouTube’s live controls may offer auto-start and auto-stop, allowing the encoder to control starting and stopping when those options are enabled. These controls do not replace monitoring a continuous broadcast.

Set the encoder for 4K at 60fps

Resolution, frame rate, and codec

Set the video output to 3840Ă—2160 progressive (2160p) at 60 fps. YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported live video codecs on the returned guidance page. Choose a codec your encoder supports and that YouTube’s current ingest settings accept.

Bitrate and keyframes

YouTube’s English encoder-settings page lists 35 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60. For AV1 or H.265, that page lists a 10–40 Mbps range. These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a promise that every encoder or connection will perform well at those settings. A localized YouTube result showed a different H.264 recommendation, so check the current bitrate table for your region and selected codec before going live. Do not substitute YouTube’s higher recommended bitrate for uploaded 4K video; live ingest has its own settings.

Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm that both values are set in the encoder rather than relying on an automatic or variable setting. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Use RTMPS when available

If your encoder offers RTMPS, choose it for ingest. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted transmission to its servers: YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Calculate upload capacity for 4K60

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup bitrates where relevant. The 20% is a YouTube recommendation, not a guaranteed connection tier. The connection must have dependable upstream capacity—not merely a high advertised download speed—and other users sharing it can reduce available upload bandwidth: YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

At the English page’s 35 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 2160p60, 20% headroom implies more than 42 Mbps of upload capacity before accounting for audio and network overhead. That is arithmetic based on YouTube’s bitrate and headroom guidance, not a YouTube-published ISP plan requirement. The practical target should also account for network variation and any backup stream you configure.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Run an upload-speed test on the connection and at the location the encoder will use.
  2. Repeat the test when the network is under its expected shared load; do not assume a single quiet-period result represents continuous performance.
  3. Compare dependable upstream capacity with the full stream bitrate and YouTube’s headroom recommendation.
  4. If the connection cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate or change the connection or hosting workflow before treating 4K60 as viable.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Start a test stream using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, loop, and network conditions planned for the broadcast.
  2. Watch YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for stream-health messages while the encoder is sending video.
  3. Check that the nature footage actually loops or advances as intended and that the encoder continues supplying video rather than reaching the end of a file.
  4. Confirm that the stream key is entered only in the intended encoder and that the scheduled stream or live controls behave as expected.
  5. Decide how you will detect a dropped feed and restore it. A continuous-stream plan needs a recovery process, not just a successful initial start.

YouTube recommends testing with a stream resembling the planned broadcast and monitoring stream health. Its documentation does not establish that a 24/7 setup will run indefinitely without interruption, nor does the cited material establish a maximum duration policy or a service uptime figure for this workflow.

Choose local encoding or a cloud workflow

Decision point Local encoder Cloud workflow
What supplies the stream? Your computer or standalone hardware encoder, plus a continuously available video loop. A cloud service supplies the prerecorded stream; check its current runtime, bitrate, and storage limits.
Must equipment at home remain on? Yes: the encoder, source playback, power, and network must remain available. Not when the stream is being supplied from the cloud.
What to check before committing Whether your encoder can handle 4K60, whether it can stay powered and connected, and how you will monitor and recover a failure. Current service limits, supported stream settings, monitoring and recovery provisions, and total cost.
Cost basis Account for the equipment and ongoing power and connectivity you will use; no universal cost is established. Compare the provider’s current terms and charges against your operating needs; limits and prices vary by provider.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for nature footage

Use footage and audio that you own or are authorized to broadcast. Nature visuals may still contain copyrighted music, narration, or other material; a live loop does not remove those rights considerations. Check the music and footage rights before scheduling the stream, and review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization rather than assuming that permission to use a clip guarantees monetization eligibility.

A continuous loop should also offer viewers genuine value. Repeating footage does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube’s channel policies. Review the applicable YouTube policies in Studio and address any copyright or reused-content concerns before relying on a 24/7 format.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Activation is unavailable First-time live-stream activation is still processing. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as YouTube advises, then check Live Control Room again.
Stream health reports problems or the feed drops Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the connection is shared and under load. Test upstream performance under realistic load, preserve the recommended headroom, and reduce bitrate or change the connection/workflow if it cannot sustain the target.
The encoder cannot maintain 4K60 The encoder or selected workflow cannot reliably encode and supply the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Confirm encoder capability and codec support. Test the full planned configuration before leaving it unattended; lower the target if the setup cannot sustain it.
The stream does not start or send video The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the scheduled/live controls may not match the encoder workflow. Copy the URL and key again from the intended YouTube Studio stream, keep the key private, and verify the start controls and encoder output.
The broadcast stops when a video ends The encoder is not configured to loop or continuously supply the prerecorded footage. Check the playlist or loop behavior in a test resembling the planned stream; do not assume a single-file playback will repeat.
Video quality is inconsistent The selected bitrate may not fit the connection, or encoder settings may differ from the planned values. Check resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and actual upload stability; consult YouTube’s current settings table for the relevant locale and codec.
