First check whether FFmpeg is still running, suspended, or has exited; then verify that the exact input path exists and is readable. A missing local file and a background process suspended while checking terminal input are different problems, so they need different fixes. Check the logs after those checks. YouTube’s stream URL and key matter only once FFmpeg can read media and produce input packets.
Diagnose the failure before changing flags
A stream that appears frozen does not necessarily mean FFmpeg is waiting for YouTube. The process might have exited after failing to open its input, been suspended by terminal input handling, or remained alive while blocked on a pipe, input, or network output. The operating system, launch method, command and logs determine which case applies; without them, no single cause can be assumed.
- Check the process state. Determine whether FFmpeg is running, suspended, or no longer present. If it exited, inspect its captured standard error or log for the input-open error and exit status. If it is suspended, investigate how its standard input and terminal are attached. If it remains running, look for evidence of a blocked pipe, stalled input, or output/network problem rather than treating “running” as proof of progress.
- Check the exact source path. Confirm the path supplied to
-iis the intended one and that the file exists and is readable by the account running FFmpeg. Relative paths can resolve differently under a service, scheduler, or background launcher than in an interactive shell. - Read the FFmpeg log. Separate errors opening or reading the local input from messages about output, protocol, or connection failures. Do not change YouTube settings until FFmpeg can produce input packets.
FFmpeg accepts input sources through -i; its command-line documentation does not establish a built-in policy for waiting until a missing local file appears. The check-and-retry behavior therefore belongs in the wrapper, script, or supervisor that launches FFmpeg. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Choose an explicit policy for a missing file
Decide what should happen before launching the encoder. A restart loop without a path check can repeatedly fail against the same unavailable file; restarting alone is not recovery.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Policy | When it fits | Continuity and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Validate, then wait and retry for a bounded time | Another process is expected to create the file soon. | Allows the intended media to arrive before startup, but adds a defined startup delay. Set a timeout and report a clear failure when it expires. |
| Use a known fallback input | The output must remain live while the primary source is absent. | Can keep a valid feed going, but viewers will see the fallback. Verify that it exists, is readable, and is authorized for use. |
| Fail clearly and let a supervisor alert or retry | Missing media is exceptional and continuity is not required until it returns. | Simple to observe, but there is no stream from the missing source until it is restored and the launch succeeds. |
Make the failure actionable: include the resolved path, the fact that it was missing or unreadable, and what the operator should restore or check. If a retry is appropriate, bound it by a time or attempt limit and log each attempt.
Stop background FFmpeg from waiting on terminal input
FFmpeg’s FAQ explains that it checks console input for commands such as q and ?; in a background task, that check can cause the operating system to suspend the process. The FFmpeg Project describes this in its FAQ, section 3.19. For an unattended invocation, add -nostdin to the FFmpeg command. Alternatively, detach or redirect standard input: use /dev/null on Linux or macOS, or NUL on Windows. For example, on Linux/macOS:

ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i /absolute/path/video.mp4 ...
The ellipsis represents the rest of the command, including output configuration; it is not a literal option. Redirecting stdin is an alternative, not a way to make an absent file appear. -nostdin addresses this documented terminal-input suspension case; it does not fix missing input, a blocked pipe, or a network failure.
Use reconnect and FIFO recovery only for matching failures
FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnect controls for supported network inputs, including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, HTTP status filters and retry/delay limits. They do not define a policy for a nonexistent local file. Consult the protocol documentation and choose options for the relevant network input and failure type.

The FIFO muxer has output recovery controls such as attempt_recovery. Its drop_pkts_on_overflow option can let processing continue without waiting for a full output queue, but that can drop packets and leave missing portions of the stream. These are output-side tradeoffs, not repairs for an absent source. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.
Configure YouTube after the input works
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the live server URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to get these details.
- Pass the actual server URL and key shown for that stream to your encoder. Do not publish or share the key: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- If using RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions rather than assuming a fixed endpoint.
- Test the complete input-to-output path and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers supported codecs and recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and codec; follow its current guidance for the quality you choose.
A valid destination cannot compensate for an input that FFmpeg cannot open. Resolve source availability and process state first, then investigate the server URL, key, protocol, and YouTube stream health if the encoder is producing input packets but delivery still fails.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately and logs an input-open error. | Missing, mistyped, relative, or unreadable local path. | Resolve the path and permissions; use the chosen bounded wait, fallback, or clear-failure policy before relaunching. |
| The background process remains present but is suspended. | Console or standard-input handling. | Use -nostdin or detach/redirect stdin, then check that the launcher no longer leaves FFmpeg suspended. |
| The process is running but there is no visible progress. | Possibly blocked input, pipe, or output—not necessarily a missing file. | Inspect process state and logs, and determine whether FFmpeg is receiving input packets or stalled at network output before changing recovery settings. |
| Input is available, but a network input or output fails. | Protocol connection or output queue behavior. | Use only the reconnect or FIFO controls relevant to that failure, accounting for retry delays or possible packet loss. |
| FFmpeg can read media, but YouTube does not show a healthy stream. | Server URL, stream key, RTMP/RTMPS choice, encoder settings, or YouTube-side stream health. | Verify the values in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and test against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
