You can send a 4K/2160p, 60fps HEVC stream to YouTube Live, but you cannot guarantee viewers receive your original file without quality loss: YouTube transcodes live video into playback formats for different devices and networks. To avoid unnecessary loss before that processing, make sure your outgoing stream—not just your source file—is 2160p60 HEVC, use a 35 Mbps constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and verify stream health during a test and the live event.
What “without quality loss” can—and cannot—mean
A 4K60 HEVC file is the input to your workflow, not proof of what YouTube receives. A playout application or service decodes the file and sends an outgoing live feed; its resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and color settings determine the feed YouTube ingests. Check those output settings and YouTube’s detected stream format.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That means a correctly configured ingest can help preserve intended quality at the platform boundary, but it cannot guarantee bit-for-bit playback of your source file. YouTube’s current encoder guidance is published at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Recommended YouTube settings for 2160p60 HEVC
Use these as YouTube’s published ingest targets, not as a guarantee of the quality delivered to every viewer. The video bitrate is the rate sent to YouTube; it is not the viewer’s required internet speed.

| Setting | Recommended configuration |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.265 (HEVC) |
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840 Ă— 2160 (2160p), 60 fps |
| Video bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum for HEVC/AV1 at 2160p60 |
| Bitrate mode | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Transport | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| HDR color | HEVC, 10-bit, compatible BT.2020 primaries and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics |
For context, YouTube’s table lists 50 Mbps recommended and 14 Mbps minimum for 2160p60 H.264. Do not apply those H.264 figures to an HEVC output. The bitrate recommendations are platform settings, not independent test results.
Prepare the file and confirm the outgoing feed
Check the source before configuring the encoder
- Confirm the file is actually 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps. A filename or “4K” label alone does not establish its properties.
- Check whether the source is SDR or HDR, its bit depth, and its color characteristics. An SDR file should not be assigned HDR metadata; selecting HEVC does not turn SDR into HDR.
- Use a representative portion with fast motion, scene changes, and audio for testing. These reveal problems that a static frame or silent clip may not.
- Make sure the chosen workflow can decode the file and produce 2160p60 HEVC output. Input-file compatibility does not by itself establish output capability.
Check the stream YouTube detects
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. Its guidance says manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key. If you use a custom key, select the intended resolution and verify the resulting stream format rather than assuming the source file determines it.

Set up a computer-based workflow
- Choose a playout and encoder path. YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software, but the listing does not establish that every computer can decode every HEVC file or encode 2160p60 HEVC. Confirm your operating system, OBS version, hardware encoder, and file format.
- Load the prerecorded video. Configure the software to play the file as the stream’s source. Check that audio is included and that playback duration, looping, or playlist behavior matches your intended broadcast.
- Set the outgoing video format. Configure 3840 Ă— 2160 output at 60 fps, H.265/HEVC, and 35 Mbps CBR. Use a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS where available. Confirm the selected encoder is actually HEVC, not H.264.
- Match color to the source. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, use a compatible HEVC 10-bit path with matching BT.2020 primaries and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. YouTube’s HDR instructions include selecting a hardware HEVC encoder in OBS; the exact available controls depend on your hardware and software version. See Stream HDR video on YouTube.
- Connect the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream, copy its stream key, and enter it in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start the feed and check YouTube’s detected resolution, frame rate, codec, stream health, and messages. Confirm audio and watch fast-moving footage and scene changes. Do not treat the file’s specifications as confirmation of the outgoing feed.
- Start the public event and monitor it. Watch stream health and any warnings throughout the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing in advance with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
Choose a workflow that can actually play your file
YouTube’s encoder directory includes software, cloud services, managed processing, and hardware examples. A directory listing is not proof that a product supports your exact file format, direct prerecorded-file playout, or the specific 2160p60 HEVC settings above. Evaluate each candidate against the actual task.
| Workflow | What to verify | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Computer software, such as OBS | Local HEVC file decoding; 2160p60 HEVC output; CBR and keyframe controls; hardware and HDR support; monitoring visibility | You want to run playout and encoding on a computer. YouTube lists OBS, but does not establish every machine or setup can meet these requirements. |
| Cloud prerecorded-video playout, such as Gyre | Current input format support, exact 4K60 HEVC output controls, color handling, and stream-health tools | You need cloud playout for a prerecorded library. YouTube’s directory describes Gyre as supporting 24/7 prerecorded streams, Full HD and 4K at 30/60 fps, and a built-in converter; confirm current details directly. |
| Managed live processing, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive | Whether the service supports the needed file playout and ingest path, plus output codec, bitrate, and color configuration | You need a managed or broadcast-oriented live processing workflow. YouTube lists support for live streaming up to 4Kp60 HEVC, but that does not establish it as a simple local-file playout solution. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Direct prerecorded-file playback, HEVC output, 2160p60, bitrate and keyframe controls, and SDR/HDR behavior | You have a live input or a device with confirmed file-playout support. YouTube’s directory includes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as streaming up to 2160p60; that resolution listing alone does not establish HEVC output or direct file playout. |
For the official directory and its listed product descriptions, see YouTube’s live encoder directory. Before buying hardware or committing to a service, confirm the exact encoder profile, software version, source format, output settings, and whether encoding happens locally or in the cloud.

Why a YouTube Live stream may look worse than the file
- YouTube is receiving a different format. The encoder may be sending a lower resolution, lower frame rate, H.264, or a lower bitrate than the source suggests. Check the actual outgoing settings and YouTube’s detected format.
- The bitrate is too low or unstable. For 2160p60 HEVC, compare the configured video bitrate with YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommended target. Use CBR and address upload instability or encoder overload rather than raising bitrate blindly.
- Keyframes are too far apart. Set a two-second interval and keep it within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Color settings do not match the source. Incorrect HDR metadata or an SDR/HDR mismatch can change appearance. Match Rec. 709 8-bit for SDR, or the compatible HEVC 10-bit BT.2020 and PQ/HLG path for HDR.
- The source itself has limitations. Compression already present in the file, its frame rate, chroma or bit depth, and encoder implementation all affect the result. The ingest settings cannot restore detail that is not in the source.
- The viewer is seeing a different playback rendition. YouTube creates multiple output formats for different devices and networks, so playback quality can differ from the incoming feed.
Copyright, reused content, and live-stream checks
Before scheduling a prerecorded video as a live broadcast, make sure you have the rights to all video, music, and other material in it. A technically correct HEVC stream does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted material. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and copyright enforcement apply to prerecorded content as well as camera feeds. Review the applicable guidance in YouTube’s live encoder settings help and YouTube’s current channel monetization policies; meeting technical requirements does not guarantee monetization eligibility, particularly when a channel relies on reused material.
