How to Stream 24/7 Night Forest Ambience with FFmpeg on Linux

To stream a prerecorded night-forest ambience video continuously from Linux, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file and -re to send it at normal playback speed. Then publish to your streaming platform’s ingest URL and stream key. For YouTube, a practical H.264 example is below; a true 24/7 setup also needs process supervision, logging, and stream-health monitoring, because looping the file alone cannot keep a failed computer or connection online.

What you need before starting

  • A Linux machine that can remain powered on and connected to the internet for the duration of the stream.
  • A prerecorded ambience file, such as forest-night.mp4, that you have permission to stream. Check that it plays correctly and that its audio and video are suitable for continuous playback.
  • FFmpeg installed on the machine.
  • A live-stream destination that accepts an FFmpeg RTMP or RTMPS feed. Copy its ingest URL and stream key from that destination’s live setup; the command below uses a placeholder endpoint, not a usable credential.

This workflow describes sending a prerecorded file as a live stream. It does not turn a camera feed into a looping video, and the command does not determine whether your account or destination permits a particular broadcast duration. Check the destination’s current account and ingest rules.

Prepare the YouTube stream settings

If YouTube is your destination, its current published guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio. The example below uses H.264 and AAC for a broadly compatible setup. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and recheck them before going live, since platform guidance can change.

Output setting YouTube guidance or example
Transport RTMPS is recommended; RTMP is also listed.
Video codec H.264, H.265, or AV1; the command uses H.264.
Keyframes Two-second interval recommended; no more than four seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3. For stereo AAC/MP3, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
H.264 video bitrate at 720p30 8 Mbps recommended by YouTube’s published guidance accessed in 2026.
H.264 video bitrate at 1080p30 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube’s published guidance accessed in 2026.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The sample command targets 30 fps, and its 8 Mbps video bitrate corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30—not 1080p30. Include audio and leave network headroom beyond the video bitrate; do not assume a connection that just matches the video figure will be stable.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run FFmpeg and loop the ambience file

  1. Open your destination’s live setup. Copy the ingest host and stream key exactly. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your stream.
  2. Choose the output resolution. The command below assumes a 720p30 H.264 output. If you change the frame size or frame rate, confirm the applicable bitrate guidance and adjust the command accordingly.
  3. Start FFmpeg:
    ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i forest-night.mp4
      -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
      -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
      -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
      -f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-host>/<application>/<stream-key>'

Replace the quoted placeholder with the RTMPS endpoint and credential supplied by your destination. Keep the single quotes if the real URL contains shell-special characters.

  4. Confirm the stream at the destination. Wait for its preview or stream-health panel to show incoming video and audio, then start the broadcast using that platform’s controls if required.

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads the file at its native playback rate instead of sending it as fast as the machine can process it. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second keyframe interval. -b:v and -maxrate set the video rate target and ceiling in this example; -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing with -f flv. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for options and input/output behavior.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, checking upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health during the event. For an ambience broadcast, test the actual file—not just a still frame or silent placeholder—so you can catch audio gaps, unexpected transitions, or encoding problems. YouTube Help puts it this way: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

  • Check that the destination receives the expected resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate.
  • Listen for silence, clipping, abrupt loop boundaries, or audio that does not match the picture.
  • Watch the destination’s stream-health panel and confirm your upload connection has margin above the configured stream rate.
  • Verify that the stream key and ingest URL remain correct, and avoid exposing them in screenshots, public logs, or shared configuration files.

Keep a 24/7 process running on Linux

Infinite input looping only addresses the end of the media file. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a disconnected internet connection, keep a host powered on, or ensure the destination remains available. For an unattended Linux deployment, run the command under a process supervisor such as systemd, configure a restart policy for process failure, retain logs you can inspect, and alert if the process exits or the destination stops receiving the stream. These measures improve recovery and visibility; they are not an uninterrupted-service guarantee.

FFmpeg’s documentation also shows an output FIFO configuration that attempts recovery after temporary output failures and retries after a one-second wait. That is an additional recovery mechanism, not a substitute for supervising the process and checking the destination’s health. Review the FFmpeg documentation before adapting FIFO options to your output.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Destination receives no video Incorrect ingest URL or stream key, wrong destination settings, or a publishing connection failure. Copy the endpoint and key again from the destination’s live setup; inspect FFmpeg’s error output and the destination’s stream-health panel.
Video arrives but looks unstable or drops frames Insufficient upload capacity, network variation, or output settings mismatched to the connection. Check upload bitrate and stream health. Leave headroom beyond the video rate, including audio and network variation.
Audio is absent or incorrect The input may lack an audio stream or the selected audio settings may not suit it. Confirm the source file has the intended audio and test playback at the destination before leaving the stream unattended.
Stream stops when the file ends The command may be missing -stream_loop -1, or the input may not be the expected file. Confirm the option appears before the input and that the file path is correct. Looping does not recover from a process or host failure.
Stream stops after FFmpeg exits Input looping does not restart a failed process. Inspect retained logs, configure a supervisor restart policy, and alert on process exit or missing destination output.
