You can keep reading music live on YouTube by sending a rights-cleared music-and-visual feed through an encoder, but a continuous stream is not the best choice if viewers need a dependable full-length replay: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond that point. Before you start, confirm your music rights, prepare the channel and encoder, leave upload bandwidth headroom, and decide whether to restart in shorter sessions.
Choose continuous playback or shorter sessions
A 24/7 feed keeps music available without scheduled gaps, but it involves ongoing monitoring and does not guarantee a complete replay or full-day rewind. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR capabilities may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance explain these limits.

For a channel that must run continuously but also needs recorded sessions, arrange a local recording as a separate backup. YouTube does not promise uninterrupted streaming, so plan how to respond if the encoder or connection stops.
Confirm music rights before building the feed
Use tracks only when your permission or license covers the intended use. Check that it includes livestreaming on YouTube, planned monetization, the territories you want to reach, archiving, and synchronization with any visuals. Attribution by itself does not establish permission, and a label or distributor may control rights to the recording or composition.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and prompt you to stop using the content; leaving the material in place can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. If you have licensed third-party music, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist: Copyright issues with live streams. YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted even when you have a license if your channel has not been allowlisted.
YouTube for Artists advises creators planning to use copyright-protected music in a livestream to coordinate with their label or distributor: YouTube for Artists. The platform’s guidance does not determine what a particular license grants. Confirm permissions for the specific music, recording, territories, and uses rather than assuming that a track described as “copyright-free” is cleared for your broadcast.

Prepare the YouTube channel
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio well before the planned broadcast; activation can require advance preparation. Check the current eligibility requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- Confirm that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days and that the person streaming meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16, as stated in its current help guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Select the encoder-stream workflow, then copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Choose the intended visibility and title, and check that your music and visuals are suitable for the audience and use you plan to make of the archive.

Build and send the music feed
Prepare the audio and visuals
Make a playlist or a deliberate loop of cleared recordings, and pair it with visuals you have permission to use. Check the transition between the end and start of the loop so it does not create an abrupt silence or audio jump. YouTube supports encoder workflows for composed content such as overlays; its guidance describes software encoders and professional hardware encoders as options. A static music loop does not, by itself, establish a need for a dedicated hardware encoder.

Choose an encoder that fits the production
A software encoder running on a computer is a practical way to combine the audio and visuals and send them to YouTube. A hardware encoder is an alternative for production needs that justify it, not a universal requirement. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started; if you already have an adequate computer, you do not need to buy another one just to try a software encoder. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a single required resolution, bitrate, or encoder setting for every static music feed. Choose settings supported by your encoder and connection, then use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information to check the result before committing to a long broadcast.

Check the internet connection and preview
- Make sure available upload capacity exceeds the stream’s bitrate and leaves room for normal fluctuations and other network use. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its general streaming tips.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled live start and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check both audio and visuals, including levels, silence, clipping, and loop transitions.
- Test the full setup before relying on it for an extended broadcast. During the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and verify that the archive is present when replay matters.

Run the broadcast and protect the archive
- In Live Control Room, confirm the preview, stream health, title, and visibility before starting the broadcast.
- Keep the encoder and network connection running. If you need replay coverage, end the session before it reaches 12 hours, start a new session, and check the resulting archive.
- For a genuinely continuous listening service, plan how you will notice and handle a connection failure, encoder crash, or YouTube interruption. YouTube’s official guidance recommends monitoring; it does not promise that any setup will stay live without interruption.
- When the broadcast ends, check the archive and retain a separate local recording if it is important to have a copy. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube replaces or interrupts the stream
A third-party music match may trigger a placeholder or an interruption. Stop using the matched content and review the rights for the specific recording and use. If the music is licensed, contact the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption.

The preview is missing or stream health is poor
Check that the encoder is using the correct YouTube stream URL and key, that it is actively sending, and that your connection has upload headroom. Recheck the feed in Live Control Room before going live; monitor stream health after starting rather than assuming the preview guarantees a stable long run.
The archive is missing or viewers cannot rewind far back
Check the session length. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, while DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. For future broadcasts where a full archive matters, use sessions under 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup.
The loop has silence, jumps, or uneven levels
Inspect the source files and the transition between the last and first tracks in the playlist. Correct the audio and visual sequence in the feed before restarting, then preview it in Live Control Room.
