To stream ambient music around the clock with FFmpeg, send a looping audio file and an optional still image to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The setup requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, rights to the audio and visuals, a stable computer and internet connection, and a test run before you rely on it. FFmpeg can loop the inputs, but it will not protect the broadcast from a computer or network failure.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe these requirements.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain on and connected for the duration of the stream. The command below is a template, not a tested, guaranteed-to-work configuration.
- An ambient audio file and, if you want video, an image or other visual you have permission to use.
- Enough stable upload capacity for the selected video and audio bitrates, with bandwidth left over for network variation.
YouTube does not establish a minimum computer specification in the guidance cited here. Test your actual files and installed FFmpeg build rather than assuming a particular machine will handle a continuous stream.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select an encoder stream in the live-streaming workflow.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key exactly. The key is the credential FFmpeg uses to send your feed; keep it private. YouTube explains encoder setup in its encoder streaming guide.
- Use YouTube’s preview in Live Control Room for a short test before making the broadcast public. Confirm that both audio and video appear as expected.
Prepare the audio and visual
Choose audio you can lawfully stream
Use music or ambient recordings for which you have the necessary rights for a live YouTube broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches; a match can replace the image, interrupt the stream or terminate it. Having a license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Check the license terms and, where needed, ask the rights holder about allowlisting. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Decide whether to add a still image
A still image gives the broadcast a visual component without requiring moving footage. The example command uses artwork as the video input and repeats it. It does not scale the image or guarantee a particular output resolution; choose your output dimensions and bitrate deliberately. Use a visual you have permission to display.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Match resolution and bitrate to your upload connection; YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
| Output target | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz. These settings are guidance, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain a stream. For a source with an unchanging image, higher video resolution may add little visual value; choose based on the presentation you want and the capacity available.

The illustrative command below uses 3 Mbps video, which is only a 480p30-class recommended rate. It does not set a 480p output size, so change the video dimensions and bitrate together if you need a specific resolution. The command’s 60-frame GOP at 30 fps corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval.
Run FFmpeg with looping inputs
In FFmpeg, -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping for the next input. Input options must appear before the input they affect. In this template, -loop 1 holds the image input, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the audio input.

- Replace
artwork.pngandambient-audio.m4awith paths to your files. - Replace the output value with the RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s displayed format exactly; do not share the key.
- Adjust resolution and video bitrate as a matched pair if the intended output is not 480p30-class. The command does not scale the artwork.
- Run a private or unlisted test first. Verify FFmpeg accepts the files and codecs, YouTube receives the feed, and the sound and image behave as intended.
FFmpeg’s documentation covers input looping and RTMP output. Exact behavior can depend on your FFmpeg build, source files and the ingest settings YouTube currently displays.
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Listen for silence, clipping, gaps at the loop point or unwanted changes in level; inspect the visual for unexpected blanking or scaling.
- Confirm that your measured upload capacity can sustain the combined stream bitrate while preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Keep monitoring audio and video after going live. YouTube specifically advises streamers to continuously monitor stream quality.
Ambient broadcasts usually do not need real-time audience interaction, so the lowest-latency mode is not automatically the best choice. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; the tradeoff for a particular setup depends on the connection and was not measured here.

Know the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
The computer and connection are part of the system
With FFmpeg running locally, the computer must stay on and the network must remain available. A network disruption can break the feed; this setup does not itself provide automatic recovery. Test the process, check the YouTube preview and monitor the stream while it is live.
A 24/7 stream is not a guaranteed full-length archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a durable recording, keep a separate local archive instead of relying on the replay of a continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Copyright can interrupt an otherwise functioning encoder
A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that the content is cleared or that the stream will remain uninterrupted. Content ID matching can affect the live broadcast even when you believe you have permission; resolve rights and allowlisting questions before relying on a track.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, unsupported output, or FFmpeg input failure | Copy the current URL and key again from YouTube Studio, keep the key private, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output. Test with the actual files before going public. |
| Video looks soft, stretched or the wrong size | The command does not scale the artwork; bitrate alone does not define resolution | Set the intended video dimensions explicitly and select the matching bitrate from YouTube’s guidance. |
| Video or audio buffers | Insufficient or variable upload capacity, or a bitrate that leaves too little headroom | Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions, lower the target bitrate or resolution if needed, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Audio stops or does not loop | Loop option placed after the input, unreadable source, or a file/build compatibility issue | Put -stream_loop -1 before the audio -i, then test that file in the installed FFmpeg build. |
| The live stream is interrupted despite a valid connection | Possible third-party content match or rights-holder action | Review YouTube’s notice and the rights for the material; ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. |
| The replay is missing or incomplete | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold or archiving otherwise did not preserve it | Keep a separate recording if a complete, durable copy matters. |
