automatic mid-roll ads

Can a Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream Use Automatic Mid-Roll Ads?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, with an important qualification: if prerecorded video is sent to YouTube as an actual Live broadcast, it can use the live-stream monetization workflow, including automatic mid-rolls, when the channel and broadcast are eligible. YouTube documents prerecorded-media streaming to Live and automatic ads on eligible live streams, but does not explicitly guarantee that every prerecorded broadcast qualifies. Check the specific broadcast’s Monetization controls in YouTube Studio.

What “prerecorded live stream” means for ads

The video must be transmitted as a YouTube Live broadcast, for example by scheduling prerecorded media through an encoder. Merely uploading a video—or presenting it as a Premiere—is not the same as creating a live broadcast. YouTube documents both the prerecorded-media encoder route and live mid-roll options, so their compatibility supports a qualified yes; YouTube does not publish a separate rule confirming eligibility for every prerecorded feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes streaming prerecorded media directly to Live, while its live monetization guidance explains live ad settings.

Check eligibility and turn on automatic mid-rolls

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then start or schedule the broadcast. For prerecorded media, use an encoder workflow that sends the file to YouTube Live.
  2. Open the broadcast’s Edit → Monetization settings. The channel must be monetized and monetization must be enabled for the live stream.
  3. Choose Automatic for live ad settings. YouTube also describes scheduled and manual mid-roll options. Controls and availability can depend on broadcast eligibility and may change, so confirm what appears for the specific broadcast in Studio. YouTube’s setup instructions cover the live ad controls.

Automatic placement aims for natural breakpoints, but it does not guarantee an ad slot will serve. Viewers can also encounter ads at different times. YouTube Help says it shows mid-roll ads at natural breakpoints during a live stream.

Choose automatic, scheduled, or manual placement

Mode How it works Operational trade-off
Automatic YouTube chooses placements, aiming for natural breakpoints. Least hands-on; YouTube recommends this mode. Ad serving is not guaranteed.
Scheduled Set recurring ad breaks at intervals from 6 to 30 minutes. Gives interval control, but requires choosing a schedule. YouTube cautions that scheduled or manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic.
Manual The creator inserts breaks. Most direct timing control, but requires active intervention and may have lower earnings potential than automatic.

These are live-stream controls. YouTube’s ordinary uploaded-video guidance separately says mid-rolls are available on monetized videos at least eight minutes long, with settings managed for the video. Do not treat that eight-minute threshold as a stated requirement for live mid-rolls. YouTube’s uploaded-video guidance covers the VOD rule.

What YouTube’s revenue figure does—and does not—show

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. The comparison was between channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled and channels without the feature, across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a platform-reported group comparison, not an individual forecast or proof that enabling the setting caused a particular creator’s revenue to rise. YouTube’s live monetization guidance provides the figure and qualification.

Keep a prerecorded broadcast running without a home computer

If your goal is simply to send uploaded video to YouTube Live continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo is separate from YouTube’s ad eligibility decision; check the broadcast’s Monetization settings in Studio.
