Standard YouTube has no confirmed universal setting to turn off the “Are you still watching?” prompt. YouTube Premium does not appear to add one. On a desktop browser, a third-party extension can try to dismiss the prompt automatically; on phones and most TVs, viewers generally need to respond manually. YouTube TV is a separate service and has an Auto-pause control on some devices.
First, check which YouTube product you mean
The advice depends on the app or service:
- Standard YouTube: The main YouTube website and app. There is no confirmed universal switch for its inactivity prompt.
- YouTube Music: Its playback and browser behavior may differ. Some browser-extension listings claim support, but that is not a built-in YouTube setting.
- YouTube TV: A separate live-TV service. Community guidance describes an Auto-pause control in its player on some setups; do not assume that control exists in standard YouTube.
- YouTube Kids: A separate app with its own playback experience. The standard YouTube steps below should not be assumed to apply.
The message may say “Are you still watching?” or “Video paused. Continue watching?” and offer a button such as “Yes,” “Continue,” or “Keep watching.” Wording and timing can vary by device, app version, playback context, and experiments, so there is no single guaranteed timer or trigger to rely on.
Can you disable the prompt in standard YouTube?
As of August 18, 2026, YouTube does not document a universal setting for disabling this check, and YouTube Community guidance says there is no direct switch in YouTube or YouTube Premium. That is the best available guidance, not a promise that YouTube will never add a control.
Premium is not a dependable fix. It provides other benefits, but available guidance does not establish that it disables the inactivity prompt. Do not subscribe solely to avoid this message.

Also distinguish the prompt from YouTube’s Take a break reminder. That is a user-configured wellness notification; the “still watching” dialog is a playback safeguard associated with unattended viewing. There is no authoritative evidence here that turning off the break reminder disables the playback prompt.
What about Autoplay?
Turning off Autoplay stops YouTube from automatically starting another recommended video after the current one ends. It may reduce some unattended playback, but it does not establish that the inactivity check is disabled. If you want a playlist or queue to continue, turning Autoplay off may also defeat your goal.

Desktop workaround: use a browser extension carefully
On a computer, a browser extension can watch for the confirmation dialog and click its continuation button. Depending on the extension, it may also attempt to restart playback or act when the YouTube tab is in the background. These are third-party tools, not YouTube features, and they can stop working when YouTube changes its interface.

Its listing says it can automatically click the continuation button, works on youtube.com and m.youtube.com, offers an on/off toggle, and can check for the dialog in a background tab. The listing also says it may call video.play() when needed. Those are the developer’s claims, not independent reliability or privacy testing.

- Open the extension’s page in your browser’s official extension marketplace.
- Read the developer information and permissions before installing. Prefer tools whose access is limited to YouTube and whose data practices are clearly explained.
- Select Add to Chrome and confirm. Check the extension’s toolbar menu and turn it on if necessary.
- Reload any YouTube tabs that were already open, then test with a long video or playlist while you are present.
- To stop automatic continuation, switch the extension off or remove it from the browser’s extensions page.
Other Chrome Web Store listings make similar claims. NonStop Youtube – Auto Continue Watching says it supports YouTube and YouTube Music and can work in inactive or minimized tabs. Its publisher attributes prompts to approximate browser and mobile timings of 60 and 30 minutes respectively; those are not official universal YouTube timers. Watch YouTube™ Nonstop says it supports YouTube and YouTube Music and offers an in-player toggle. Treat these as listing claims, not endorsements or guarantees.
Extension privacy and playback trade-offs
A Web Store statement such as “no data collected” is not an independent privacy audit. Before installing, look for a clear developer identity and support page, recent maintenance, meaningful reviews, and permissions that make sense for the feature. Avoid an extension that asks for access to every website without a clear reason, changes unrelated search results, or injects advertising. Be able to disable and remove it easily.

An auto-clicker may respond when you meant to pause, resume video after you stopped, or conflict with ad blockers, player customizers, script blockers, or tab-suspension tools. Keeping a tab active can also increase battery, CPU, network, and data use. Test it for a short session before leaving it running overnight.

For the standard YouTube app on Android or iPhone, there is no confirmed universal in-app switch to disable the prompt. Desktop browser extensions generally cannot control playback inside the native mobile app.

The same limitation applies to smart TVs, Google TV or Android TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and game consoles: there is no confirmed general setting that removes YouTube’s own confirmation. A television’s sleep timer, screensaver, or energy-saving setting controls whether the device sleeps; it normally does not dismiss a prompt inside YouTube. A YouTube Community response likewise distinguishes TV power settings from the prompt and notes browser extensions as a web workaround (community discussion).
You can check your TV or streaming device’s power settings separately if the device itself is going to sleep. If YouTube displays its confirmation, however, you may still need to use the remote. For a long playlist or background audio on a device with no practical extension option, consider whether local playback or a dedicated audio service better fits the use case; those alternatives may not have YouTube’s video catalog.
If you mean YouTube TV: check Auto-pause
YouTube TV is separate from standard YouTube. Community guidance reports an Auto-pause option in the player on some devices. While watching, open the player controls, press the down button twice, move left to the three-dot menu, choose Auto-pause, then select the longest duration available. Some guidance reports an option of up to 24 hours, but the label, path, and maximum may vary by device, account, or rollout. See the YouTube TV setting discussion and menu guidance.

If the workaround is not working
- Confirm the product. Check whether you are using standard YouTube, YouTube Music, YouTube TV, or YouTube Kids; their controls are not interchangeable.
- Update the app or browser. Then test again. Interface changes can affect extensions.
- Check for conflicts. Temporarily test without ad blockers, player customizers, script blockers, or tab-suspension tools.
- Check permissions. Make sure the extension is enabled and allowed to run on youtube.com and, if needed, m.youtube.com.
- Reload YouTube. Tabs already open during installation may need a refresh.
- Test while present. Try a long video or playlist before relying on automatic continuation.
- If it breaks after a YouTube update, remove it. Avoid stacking several auto-clickers, which can compete or behave unpredictably.
- Check device sleep separately. Adjust TV or streaming-device power settings only if the device itself is sleeping; this is not a fix for YouTube’s dialog.
- Report unusual behavior. If the prompt appears unusually soon while you are actively watching, use YouTube’s in-product feedback option; it may be a bug rather than normal inactivity behavior.
Use unattended playback with care
Before leaving a playlist running for sleep, pets, or background listening, test the setup and consider mobile data use, battery drain, heat, screen burn-in, and unwanted autoplay. An extension may keep playback going indefinitely. If you are driving, set up playback before the trip and do not reach for a phone or remote to answer the prompt while driving; a community report of the prompt appearing in a car is not a reason to interact with a device on the road (discussion).
Some viewers report that live streams behave differently, but that is anecdotal and not a reliable workaround. Do not plan around a live stream avoiding the prompt.
