Netflix lets you hide a programme from that profile’s Viewing activity; the Apple TV app lets you disable or clear Play History; and Prime Video reduces cross-household mixing through separate profiles. Disney+ documents removing a title from Continue Watching, but that is a row-cleanup action, not a confirmed recommendation reset. Hulu, Max, Peacock and Paramount+ document personalization or content controls, yet the available guidance does not establish a verified, genre-wide true-crime block.

Which control should you use?
| Service | Documented action | What it changes | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Hide an episode or title in the profile’s Viewing activity | Removes the watched-title display and Continue Watching entry; Netflix says the hidden title will not inform recommendations unless watched again | Updates can take up to 24 hours; this is not a guaranteed whole-genre block |
| Apple TV app | Turn off Use Play History or select Clear Play History | Stops or removes play-history data used for personalized recommendations and the watchlist; clearing also removes titles from Continue Watching and Watchlist rows | Clearing is broad, and availability varies by region and hardware |
| Prime Video | Use a separate profile for each household member | Separates recommendations, watchlists and season progress based on profile activity | No verified title-hide or genre-exclusion control is established here |
| Disney+ | Remove a title from Continue Watching | Clears that title from the visible row | Disney’s instructions do not claim that viewing history or recommendations are reset |
| Hulu, Max, Peacock and Paramount+ | Use current in-app Help or Settings; documented material does not verify a true-crime suppression path | Depends on the control currently offered in your app | Parental or maturity settings restrict access; they are not proof of recommendation filtering |
Why true-crime titles keep appearing
A streaming home screen is not driven only by the last programme you watched. Netflix says its recommendation system can use viewing history, ratings, interactions with titles, the tastes of members with similar preferences, and title information such as genre and actors. It also cites language preference, device, time of day and how long a programme was watched. Newer engagement can outweigh older preferences.
That explains why opening a documentary “just to see what it is,” watching several minutes, finishing an episode, rating it or saving it can all reinforce the same cluster of suggestions. Hiding one item is useful feedback, but it should not be described as a permanent switch that blocks every programme classified as true crime. Avoiding further engagement and using the correct personal profile gives the service cleaner signals.

Netflix: hide true crime from one profile
Hide an episode or title in a browser
- Sign in to Netflix in a web browser.
- Open the account page and choose Profiles.
- Select the profile whose home screen is affected.
- Open Viewing activity.
- Find the unwanted episode or programme and select the hide icon beside it.
- If you are hiding one episode, choose the option to hide the entire series when Netflix offers it.
Netflix says a hidden title is removed from the profile’s watched-title display and Continue Watching, and will not be used for recommendations unless it is watched again. The change can take up to 24 hours to reach every device, so a television or mobile app may continue showing the old row temporarily.
The Viewing activity control is not available when the page is reached from a Netflix Kids profile. Netflix also provides Hide all at the bottom of the activity page. That option removes substantially more history than a single-title correction; use it only when you intentionally want a broad reset.
When access, rather than recommendations, is the problem
If a particular programme should not be accessible on a profile, use Netflix’s title restrictions or maturity settings. Blocking a named title removes that title from the profile, while maturity settings limit matching content. These are access and display controls. They are different from recommendation feedback and should not be presented as a way to erase an entire genre from the algorithm.
Prime Video: stop household viewing from blending together
Choose the intended profile
- Open the profile selector in Prime Video.
- Give each regular viewer a personal profile and switch to that profile before browsing or watching.
- Ask other household members to use their own profiles rather than a shared default.
Prime Video describes separate recommendations, watchlists and season progress based on individual profile activity. The accessed help information says one Amazon account can support up to six profiles. This separation reduces the chance that one person’s crime documentaries shape another person’s home screen, but it is not a documented control for excluding true crime from a profile that has already watched it.

Apple TV app: disable or clear play history
Turn off Use Play History
- Open the Apple TV app on your television or living-room device.
- Open the sidebar and select Settings.
- Find Use Play History and turn it off.
Apple describes this setting as controlling whether play history informs personalized recommendations and the watchlist. It is the less destructive choice when you want future viewing to stop feeding those signals while keeping existing account information.

Clear Play History
- Open the same Apple TV app Settings area.
- Select Clear Play History and confirm the action if prompted.
Apple says clearing removes watched information synchronized with the Apple TV app on other devices. It also removes shows and films from Continue Watching and Watchlist rows. Because this affects all synced play history rather than one true-crime title, read the confirmation carefully before accepting it.
Separate profiles and browse preferences on Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K documents profile selection for For All of You recommendations. Its Genius Browse area can also be customized by profile and genre. Those options can keep a household’s browsing contexts apart or make genre browsing more deliberate, but the documented controls do not promise a permanent ban on every title tagged or interpreted as true crime. Apple notes that features can differ by region and hardware.
Disney+: remove a title from Continue Watching
Disney’s published instructions, dated 18 November 2025, address the Continue Watching row specifically. Use the method that matches your device:
- Mobile: open Continue Watching, tap the three-dot menu beside the title and choose Remove.
- Web browser: hover over the title in the row and select the Remove icon.
- TV-connected device: press and hold the title and choose Remove, or open the title’s details page and use its remove icon.
This clears the visible row. Disney’s instructions do not say that it deletes viewing history or changes recommendation signals, so use it when the immediate goal is a cleaner home screen rather than an algorithm reset.
Hulu, Max, Peacock and Paramount+: know what is—and is not—verified
Hulu
Hulu’s help material describes personalized collections on Home, but the available page does not establish a procedure for deleting history or suppressing a genre. Check the current app’s Help and Settings menus for a control that is actually present on your device; do not assume that removing a row changes recommendations.
Max
The Max help article titled “Getting around the HBO Max app” says the home screen uses recommendations based on what you have watched and documents genre browsing, profile management and playback settings such as autoplay. It does not establish a true-crime exclusion option.

Peacock and Paramount+
Available guidance for Peacock and Paramount+ describes profile maturity settings, PIN protection or parental content restrictions. Those tools can limit access by rating or profile, but they are not evidence of a recommendation-suppression feature. Their interfaces and regional availability can change, so use the service’s current in-app documentation rather than following an invented menu path.
A troubleshooting sequence that works across services
- Confirm the service and profile. Shared accounts commonly produce feeds that feel unrelated to the current viewer. Prime Video explicitly bases profile recommendations on individual activity.
- Use a documented history control. On Netflix, edit Viewing activity. In the Apple TV app, decide between turning off Use Play History and clearing all play history.
- Use row removal only for row cleanup. Disney+’s Remove command clears Continue Watching but is not documented as a recommendation reset.
- Stop reinforcing the unwanted category. Do not open, finish, rate or save true-crime titles while expecting the service to move away from them. Netflix identifies these interactions as recommendation inputs.
- Allow propagation time. Netflix says changes can take up to 24 hours to appear on all devices. Restarting an app may refresh its display, but it cannot shorten a server-side update that has not completed.
- Check the current Help or Settings page when no procedure is verified. Streaming interfaces are revised frequently, and a control available in one country, app version or device may be absent elsewhere.
Choose the narrowest fix for your goal
| Your goal | Best-supported action | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Remove one Netflix title and its influence | Hide that title or its entire series in Viewing activity | Only the selected history entry is corrected; the service does not promise a whole-genre block |
| Stop Apple TV app history from shaping future suggestions | Turn off Use Play History | Existing history is not described as deleted by this toggle |
| Erase Apple TV app viewing signals and visible rows | Clear Play History | All synced watched information is affected, along with Continue Watching and Watchlist rows |
| Prevent another household member’s viewing from mixing into yours | Use separate profiles, especially on Prime Video | Profile separation does not itself exclude a genre |
| Remove a Disney+ tile immediately | Use Remove in Continue Watching | The documented effect is homepage-row cleanup, not recommendation-history deletion |
| Block access to a named title | Use a service’s title restriction or maturity setting where available | Access control is different from recommendation control |
Prevent the feed from drifting back
- Keep one profile per regular viewer instead of using a household-wide default.
- Before playing a programme that you do not want influencing recommendations, switch to the appropriate profile or turn off the relevant history setting where the service supports it.
- Do not treat a title preview, partial episode or rating as neutral activity; Netflix says several forms of interaction can affect recommendations.
- When a service offers only a Continue Watching removal command, describe the result accurately: the row is cleaner, but recommendation data may remain.
- Recheck settings after a major app or device update, because menu names, feature availability and regional behavior can change.
What to do when the unwanted titles remain
First identify whether the titles are in a recommendation shelf, Continue Watching, Watchlist or a genre-browse page. Those rows can look similar but respond to different controls. A title remaining in Continue Watching after a recommendation change does not necessarily mean the history edit failed; it may simply be a row that needs its own removal command.
Next verify the profile on every device where the problem appears. Netflix’s history edit applies to the selected profile, and Prime Video’s recommendations, watchlists and progress are profile-specific. If a television is signed into a different profile from the browser where you made the change, the old suggestions can be completely expected.
For Netflix, wait the documented period of up to 24 hours before judging the result. A temporarily unchanged screen can reflect propagation rather than a failed request. For Apple TV, check whether you turned off Use Play History or selected Clear Play History: the first changes future use of history, while the second removes synced watched information and visible rows. They are not interchangeable.
Can you block the whole true-crime genre?
The documented controls here work at narrower levels: a Netflix title or series, an Apple TV play-history setting, a household profile, or a Disney+ row. None of the verified procedures promises a permanent, genre-wide exclusion across the home screen. “True crime” can also overlap with documentary, drama, mystery and news labels, so a genre filter would not necessarily catch every title a viewer considers unsuitable.
If the concern is access rather than unwanted suggestions, use a named-title restriction or maturity setting where the service provides one. That can prevent a profile from opening matching content, but it still should not be described as deleting recommendation signals. Conversely, hiding a Netflix title gives recommendation feedback but does not replace an access restriction for every related programme.

History clearing and privacy trade-offs
Clearing history is a broad action, not a harmless refresh. On Apple TV, Clear Play History affects watched information synchronized with other devices and removes titles from both Continue Watching and Watchlist rows. On Netflix, Hide all removes far more activity than hiding one episode or series. Use those options only when you are comfortable losing the useful parts of your viewing record along with the unwanted titles.
No new remote, streaming box or other physical product is needed. The relevant controls are account, profile or app settings. If a menu is missing, the likely issue is the service, device, app version or region—not a need to buy an accessory.

Limits that apply to every service
- A recommendation engine may combine several signals, so one deletion cannot guarantee a completely different home screen.
- Profiles separate activity only when viewers consistently use the right profile.
- Removing a visible tile is not automatically the same as deleting history.
- Parental, maturity and PIN controls govern access; they are not confirmed recommendation controls.
- Feature names and availability can change, particularly across television hardware, mobile apps, browsers and countries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Netflix still show true-crime titles after I hide one?
Netflix uses multiple signals, including viewing history, ratings, interactions, title details and newer engagement. A hidden title can take up to 24 hours to disappear from every device, and hiding one item is not a promise to block the entire genre.
Does removing a title from Disney+ Continue Watching stop recommendations?
Disney documents that command as removal from the Continue Watching row. Its instructions do not say that it deletes viewing history or changes recommendation signals.
Should I turn off Apple TV Use Play History or clear it?
Turn off Use Play History when you want future viewing history to stop informing personalized recommendations and the watchlist. Clear Play History when you accept a broader reset that removes synced watched information and titles from Continue Watching and Watchlist rows.
Can I stop recommendations for an entire genre on Netflix?
The documented Netflix control hides an episode, title or series from a profile’s Viewing activity. Netflix does not promise a permanent whole-genre block, so avoid describing that action as a true-crime filter.

Will a separate Prime Video profile remove titles already watched on the shared profile?
It prevents future activity on the new profile from mixing with the shared profile, and Prime Video gives profiles separate recommendations, watchlists and season progress. It does not document a way to erase or reclassify the old shared profile’s history from another profile.
What is the difference between hiding a title and blocking it?
Hiding a Netflix title corrects viewing-history and recommendation use for that profile. A title restriction or maturity setting limits access or display. They solve different problems and should not be substituted for one another.
Why are the menu options different on my television and phone?
Streaming controls vary by device, app version and region. Netflix’s history edit is documented in a browser, while Apple TV and Disney+ expose important controls in their television or mobile apps. Check the current service Help or Settings page for your device.
Do I need to buy anything to change these recommendations?
No. The supported actions take place in account, profile or app settings. Hardware accessories do not provide the recommendation controls described here.
The Bottom Line
Use the profile that actually belongs to you, then choose the smallest documented change: hide the Netflix title or series in Viewing activity, turn off or clear Apple TV Play History, separate Prime Video profiles, or remove a Disney+ title only when you want Continue Watching cleaned up. Treat parental controls as access limits, not recommendation filters, and do not promise that any single setting permanently blocks every true-crime suggestion.
