First identify where the buffering happens: rising dropped frames in OBS usually point to the connection to YouTube or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain; choppy OBS output points to rendering or encoding load; and viewer-only buffering calls for checking playback conditions and YouTube latency settings. Make one change at a time, then test again.
Diagnose which part of the stream is failing
“Buffering” can describe three different symptoms. Check the OBS dropped-frames counter, look at the OBS preview or a local recording, and ask whether the problem affects every viewer or only some. Those checks help distinguish an upload problem from an encoding problem or playback buffering.
| What you see | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The dropped-frames counter rises in OBS | The connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, including whether the configured bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. |
| OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering | Viewer networks and devices, plus the stream’s latency setting. |
| The OBS preview or local recording is choppy or poor | Encoder errors and CPU/GPU load; this may be a rendering or encoding problem rather than an upload problem. |
Fix rising dropped frames in OBS
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. If many frames are dropped, the stream may disconnect. Use the following sequence to isolate the cause.
- Lower the bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS’s 2024 troubleshooting guidance suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed, but this is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: use a stable upload rate, not an occasional speed-test peak. YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds when applicable. A stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth with that margin; other network use can reduce what is available.
- Use Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Check the network cable and other network hardware, and restart the modem or router if you are also seeing general connectivity problems. A wired connection is a troubleshooting step when Wi-Fi instability is suspected, not a guaranteed fix.
- Test the route to ingest. If OBS offers another YouTube ingest server, try it. A different streaming service can serve as a diagnostic comparison, but changing services does not by itself identify or fix the cause.
- Check software and network interference. Look for VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritization software, and outdated network drivers. OBS notes that some vendor network utilities can deprioritize OBS traffic. Change one suspected factor at a time and retest so you can tell whether it mattered.
- On Windows, test OBS network options where available. OBS documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate adjustment as options to test. Dynamic bitrate can lower stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection; OBS labels the feature beta in its guidance. Availability and labels can vary by OBS version.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not help. Congestion or routing problems may be outside your computer and OBS, so ask the provider to investigate if instability persists.
Match bitrate to YouTube’s encoder recommendations
Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. These are platform recommendations for live ingest, not a guarantee that your connection can carry the stream reliably. Do not confuse a listed minimum range with the recommended bitrate. The values below are from YouTube’s live encoder settings page, checked October 3, 2026; the inspected page did not display a publication year.

| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Choose only settings and encoders available in your installed OBS version and hardware; the available controls can vary. If a recommended bitrate causes dropped frames, first lower it to a level your connection can sustain rather than treating the recommendation as a required target.
If viewers buffer but OBS shows no dropped frames
OBS notes that viewers can report lag, buffering, or constant loading even while OBS is not dropping frames. A single viewer’s report does not establish that your computer-to-YouTube connection is failing: viewers use different networks, devices, and locations. Ask affected viewers to try another network or device and compare the result.

YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer playback formats, but playback still depends on the viewer’s conditions. Check the latency setting in YouTube’s live controls: lower latency can mean more playback buffering. If low delay is not essential, weigh that trade-off when choosing the setting. YouTube’s current live settings and troubleshooting guidance was checked October 3, 2026; the inspected pages did not display publication years.
If the OBS preview or recording is choppy
When the output already looks or sounds poor in OBS, investigate encoding and system load before changing network settings. YouTube advises checking encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive; if the encoder output appears healthy, investigate the outbound connection instead.

- Reduce output resolution or frame rate; for example, test 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable.
- Reduce game graphics load and simplify OBS scenes.
- Limit resource-heavy browser sources or filters.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator if GPU overload is the suspected cause.
These changes address rendering or encoding performance. They will not repair an unstable network route.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several settings at once: you will not know which change helped or made the stream worse. Adjust one factor and retest.
- Increasing bitrate to “improve quality” while frames are dropping: a higher bitrate demands more upload capacity and can aggravate a connection problem. Lower it until the connection is stable, then reassess quality.
- Assuming every viewer complaint means OBS is dropping frames: check the OBS counter and local output before changing ingest settings.
- Buying hardware before diagnosing the symptom: the documented first steps are to check the connection, bitrate, software interference, and system load. The guidance does not establish that a new router, encoder, or paid utility is required.
