How to Stop OBS Dropping Frames in a 24/7 Pre-Recorded YouTube Stream

Find the OBS counter that is rising before changing settings. Fix network instability or local rendering and encoding load, then plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit.

First, open OBS Studio’s Stats window and see which counter is rising. Dropped Frames (Network) points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Rendering lag or encoding lag points to a local performance problem. They need different fixes, and neither should be diagnosed as a network drop by default.

For a 24/7 prerecorded stream, lower the load or bitrate only after identifying the problem. Then test with representative audio and motion, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and keep a local recording: YouTube may not capture a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.

Check which OBS counter is increasing

In OBS, open View → Stats while the stream is running. Watch the counters as the problem occurs. If general guidance does not identify the cause, save an OBS log and use it alongside the Stats window; the right fix depends on your OBS version, operating system, encoder, hardware, connection, and ingest server.

Dropped Frames (Network)

OBS defines network drops as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Start with the bitrate and network path—not encoder quality or a computer upgrade. A higher upload speed on a speed test does not guarantee that the route to YouTube will sustain that rate continuously.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Rendering lag or encoding lag

These indicate local performance trouble. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and the system must also encode the output. High-resolution sources, complex scenes, filters, browser sources, or other GPU-heavy applications can compete for resources. Reduce local load and watch whether the relevant counter stops rising.

Viewers buffer, but OBS shows no drops

That is not proof of a network drop at the encoder. Viewers have different devices, locations, and internet connections. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but lower source bitrate or following YouTube’s recommendations may make a stream more accessible to viewers.

If network drops are rising

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Run an upload speed test, then choose a bitrate supported by stable upload capacity and YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting guideline, not a guarantee: shared uploads, route congestion, and fluctuations still matter. If network drops continue, reduce the bitrate and monitor the result rather than assuming the speed-test maximum is sustainable.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate range
720p at 30 or 60 fps 3–8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6–17 Mbps

YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; AV1 and H.265 have different ranges. Do not treat one setting as universal. For YouTube’s complete current table, consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  1. Try a different YouTube ingest server if OBS exposes that choice.
  2. Lower the bitrate and see whether network drops stop increasing.
  3. Test another streaming service only as a diagnostic: if the problem occurs there too, the issue may be broader than YouTube’s ingest route.
  4. On Windows, try OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options.
  5. Leave Bind to IP at Default. If needed, test IPv4 Only; return to IPv4 and IPv6 if it makes no difference. These choices are diagnostic, not universal improvements.

The exact controls can vary with OBS version and operating system. The Windows network optimization and TCP pacing options are Windows-only. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide for its current steps.

Check the local network and software

  • If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection to the router. Wi-Fi can be unstable, particularly under interference or changing signal conditions.
  • Check whether a VPN, firewall, antivirus, bundled network-prioritization utility, or outdated network driver is interfering with the connection.
  • If the connection still drops, investigate the modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender before replacing hardware. Contact your ISP if you cannot identify a faulty component or troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.

If you rely on Wi-Fi or need a wired link to the router, an Ethernet cable may help test whether wireless instability is involved; it will not fix every cause of network drops.

Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a fallback

In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and consider Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta). OBS can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce dropped frames. The trade-off is lower video quality, and it does not fix the underlying network problem. Treat it as a mitigation while investigating, not as proof that the route is healthy.

If rendering or encoding lag is rising

Reduce system and scene demands step by step, checking the same counter after each change. For OBS’s broader guidance, see Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

  • Close other GPU-heavy applications. If a game or similar workload is running alongside the stream, lower its graphics load or cap its frame rate.
  • Simplify scenes and collections; review resource-heavy browser sources, filters, and oversized media.
  • Lower output resolution or frame rate if the encoder or renderer cannot keep up. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. The trade-off is reduced motion smoothness; it is not a universal preset.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS says this may resolve some GPU-overload situations.

For a prerecorded loop without a game, gaming-specific remedies do not apply unless another GPU-heavy workload is present. A faster computer or a particular encoder cannot be prescribed from the counter alone; the appropriate setting depends on the workload and hardware.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings before the next run

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission to its servers. Match the settings to your codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder capability, and stable upload—not to a preset chosen without those details.

Before restarting a continuous stream, test with audio and video motion similar to the actual program. During the run, monitor OBS’s Stats and YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance includes its codec-specific recommendations and calls for testing before going live.

Protect the archive in a 24/7 stream

A continuously running stream is not guaranteed to produce a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR controls.

Keep a local recording backup and verify that its file is growing. Monitor audio and video quality as well as OBS and YouTube health messages; a stream can remain connected while the program or recording has a separate problem. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend testing before the event and checking the local archive. Their failover advice applies when a backup encoder is configured; it does not establish automatic failover on a single OBS computer.

When OBS is still dropping frames

Do not keep changing unrelated settings at random. Record which counter rises, the output resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether the connection is wired or wireless. Check the OBS log for the affected session and compare the timing of the problem with YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the evidence still does not point to a cause, use the OBS log and Stats window when seeking help; the missing system, network, and encoder details determine what can be diagnosed.
