First identify whether frames are being lost on the way to YouTube or whether your computer is failing to render or encode the stream. Those are different problems and need different fixes. Check YouTube’s stream health alongside your encoder’s statistics, preview or local recording, system load, and upload capacity before changing settings or buying hardware.
Identify which frames are dropping
“Dropped frames” can describe a connection problem or be confused with local rendering and encoding trouble. OBS defines connection-related dropped frames as occurring when the path to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A choppy encoder preview or local recording, encoder warnings, or high CPU/GPU load instead points toward local processing. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, the local archive, and outbound internet connectivity (OBS connection troubleshooting; YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- Local output is choppy, or encoding/rendering warnings rise: investigate encoding, rendering, and competing workloads on the computer.
- Local output looks healthy, but the sending statistics show dropped frames: investigate upload capacity and the connection route to YouTube’s ingest server.
- The evidence is mixed: reduce the workload and test the network separately; more than one bottleneck can occur at once.
Compare the encoder preview and local archive with YouTube’s stream health. Note which counter or warning changes, and when. YouTube recommends keeping the encoder updated and checking its output, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection.
Check whether the upload can carry every stream
Measure available upload speed under conditions similar to the planned stream, then count the outgoing bitrate of every concurrent output. YouTube says total streaming bitrate must fit within outbound bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Include both primary and backup streams if you send both; they also consume upload capacity (YouTube streaming tips).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- List the bitrate configured for each outgoing stream, including any backup stream.
- Add those bitrates to estimate the total stream traffic.
- Compare the total with upload capacity measured during representative conditions, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If capacity is insufficient or unstable, lower bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate until the connection can sustain the total.
Other people and applications sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to your encoder. A wired Ethernet connection is worth considering if the diagnosed issue is unstable Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix encoder overload and does not guarantee a solution to router, ISP, or route-to-ingest problems.
Reduce local encoding and rendering load
Multiple simultaneous transcodes compete for finite CPU and GPU resources. So can compositing complex scenes, running a game, or other GPU-intensive work. Pause unnecessary encoding jobs and intensive applications; simplify scenes; and reduce one or more output resolutions or frame rates if the machine cannot sustain the combined workload.

Consider hardware encoding only when it fits the bottleneck
OBS says hardware encoding generally shifts work from the CPU to a specialized component of the GPU and can reduce performance impact. Its quality varies by encoder generation, however, and you must confirm that the GPU and driver support the selected encoder (OBS hardware encoding).
Hardware encoding is not a cure for every overload. OBS still needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes, while other applications may compete for the same resources. If the GPU is saturated, reduce competing GPU work and rendering load as well as considering an encoder change. Compare software and hardware encoding by CPU relief, image quality at your target bitrate, generation and driver compatibility, and GPU contention (OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting).

Match YouTube’s encoder settings to the stream you are sending
Use YouTube’s documented recommendations as a starting point, not as proof that your connection or computer can sustain a setting. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the reviewed page does not state a publication year, and the values are not measurements of your available upload capacity (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
| Ingestion format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps |
YouTube’s documented workflow lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose the bitrate row that matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send; do not apply a figure from one format to another. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen setting with the required headroom, lower the outgoing load rather than treating the table as a bandwidth guarantee.

Test before the next live session
YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. A static or silent test may not represent the workload of multiple moving videos, layered scenes, or active audio.
- Reproduce the planned combination of videos, scenes, audio, and concurrent encodes.
- Check local preview or recording and OBS statistics while the test runs; also watch system CPU/GPU load.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room stream health and messages, then compare its result with the local output.
- Change one factor at a time—such as concurrent jobs, output bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or encoder—and repeat the test.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Local preview or recording is choppy; encoding or rendering warnings appear | Local encoding or rendering load | Pause unnecessary encodes and GPU-intensive applications, simplify scenes, lower output resolution or frame rate, and check whether a supported hardware encoder helps. |
| Local output is smooth, but sending statistics report dropped frames | Upload capacity or route to YouTube | Measure upload under representative conditions, include all streams in the total, leave 20% headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution/frame rate if capacity is inadequate. |
| Connection trouble appears only when another output or backup starts | Total outgoing bitrate | Count the primary and backup stream traffic together and reduce the combined load to fit available upload with headroom. |
| Problems begin when a game, scene, or another GPU workload is active | GPU rendering or resource contention | Reduce competing GPU work and scene complexity; hardware encoding alone may not resolve a saturated GPU. |
| Instability occurs on Wi-Fi but the encoder output is otherwise clean | Wireless link stability | Test a reliable wired connection if practical. If trouble persists, investigate the router, ISP, or route to ingest rather than assuming the cable is a complete fix. |
