First find out where the buffering occurs: between your encoder and YouTube, while the NAS processes video, or during playback for a particular viewer. If OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises or YouTube reports poor stream health, check upload stability and encoder settings before upgrading the NAS. If only one viewer has playback stalls, an encoder-side change may not address the cause.
Identify which part of the stream is buffering
A home NAS can be involved in different ways: it might encode or transcode the video, serve a file to a separate encoder, or simply store the recording. Those setups have different failure points, so do not assume the NAS processor is responsible.
- Encoder-to-YouTube ingest: Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s stream-health messages. OBS says rising dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. OBS explains dropped frames.
- NAS processing: Investigate CPU or transcoding capacity if the NAS itself is encoding or transcoding in real time. Plex notes that a server may buffer if it cannot transcode fast enough and that many home NAS devices have limited processors. That guidance concerns Plex playback and does not establish that NAS CPU causes YouTube ingest trouble. Plex’s transcoding guidance.
- Viewer playback: Ask whether all viewers experience stalls or only one device or connection. An OBS ingest warning does not diagnose an individual viewer’s playback conditions.
Change one thing at a time and retest, so you can tell whether a fix helped.
Lower bitrate to what your connection can sustain
Run an upload speed test, as YouTube recommends, but do not treat one peak result as guaranteed capacity. Consider the stable upload available during the stream and competing household traffic. OBS’s troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee or YouTube requirement. If OBS reports dropped frames, lower the encoder bitrate and test again. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the bitrate recommendation for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube’s current encoder-setting recommendations, not universal limits.
| Codec | Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |

Check the encoder settings and YouTube health warnings
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four; its API identifies an interval longer than four seconds as a potential buffering risk.
- Codec and frame rate: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with output up to 60 fps in the listed live-encoder guidance. Match the bitrate to the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send.
- Audio and transport: The page lists AAC or MP3 audio and RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission.
Check the current warnings in YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on a single symptom. YouTube’s API documents health statuses including good, ok, bad and noData, as well as configuration issues such as a long keyframe interval. YouTube also transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need for a stable incoming stream.
Stabilize the network path from encoder to YouTube
- If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A new cable is not automatically necessary; first test with a known-good wired path if available.
- If already wired, inspect the path. Check cable seating and the router, switch, network card, extender or other devices between the encoder and the internet. OBS lists these as possible faulty points.
- Retest under representative conditions. YouTube recommends a pre-stream test with audio and movement similar to the actual content, then monitoring stream health. For an always-on stream, test during the workload you expect to run; a short successful test does not prove an indefinite uptime guarantee.
- If drops persist, follow OBS’s remaining checks. Its troubleshooting guide suggests testing another ingest server or service where available, checking network optimization settings, VPN or security-software interference, drivers and hardware. If those checks do not resolve the connection problem, contact your ISP.
Check NAS processing only when it is doing video work
If the NAS is encoding or transcoding the stream, verify that it can sustain real-time output under the actual resolution, frame rate and codec. A processing bottleneck may produce a different symptom from dropped frames caused by the encoder’s internet connection. If the NAS only stores or serves a finished video to another encoder, Plex’s transcoding advice is not evidence that upgrading the NAS will fix YouTube buffering.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded recordings playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix for a home encoder’s network path: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
