How to Stop a YouTube Loop Stream Buffering When OBS Changes Media Sources

Check OBS source activation and visibility settings first, then use the preview and dropped-frame counter to find whether buffering is local, connection-related, or viewer-side.

If a YouTube loop stream pauses when OBS changes scenes or media sources, start by checking how the source behaves when it becomes visible or inactive. For a local file, inspect its Media Source settings; for a playlist, check VLC Video Source’s visibility behavior. Then use the OBS preview and dropped-frame counter to determine whether the pause is local playback, rendering, the connection to YouTube, or viewer-side buffering.

1. Identify the source that is switching

In OBS, open the scene containing the video and inspect the source’s properties. A single local file generally uses Media Source; a playlist uses VLC Video Source. Their playback and visibility controls differ, so make changes to the source that actually plays the loop rather than changing unrelated stream settings.

2. Check Media Source settings for a local looping file

  1. Enable Loop. In the Media Source properties, confirm that Loop is selected if the file is meant to repeat.
  2. Choose whether activation should restart playback. Review Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS documents that this restarts the file when its source is in the current scene and visible; it is on by default. If every scene change should continue the same playback position rather than restart the clip, test with this option off.
  3. Test Close file when inactive. If the source is unloaded when hidden and a pause occurs as it reappears, try turning off Close file when inactive. OBS explains that closing the file frees memory, but warns that when the source is shown again there may be a short gap while it reloads: “If switching to a scene that shows it again, there may be a small period of time where it is not showing while it reloads” (OBS Project, Media Sources documentation, January 11, 2022). Keeping the file open can use more memory, so check whether OBS remains stable after changing this setting.

3. Check VLC Video Source visibility behavior for a playlist

For a VLC playlist, inspect Visibility Behaviour in the source properties. OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when it becomes visible. That behavior can produce an intentional stop or restart during scene changes; choose the behavior that matches whether you want the playlist paused while hidden or continuing across scenes.

VLC must be installed to use VLC Video Source. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the playlist source itself fails to play or reloads unexpectedly, verify the installation and architecture before troubleshooting stream bitrate.

4. Locate where buffering begins

Watch the OBS preview while switching scenes, and compare it with what viewers report. This separates a local playback or rendering stall from a stream-delivery or viewer-playback problem.

What you observe What it suggests Where to investigate
The video pauses in OBS’s preview at the scene change The source may be restarting or reloading, or OBS may be struggling to render the scene. Media Source or VLC visibility settings; then scene and source rendering load.
The preview continues, but OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises A connection or upload problem affecting delivery to the ingest server is more likely. Connection stability, upload capacity, bitrate, and software that may interfere with OBS’s connection.
The preview continues and there are no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering Viewer buffering can still occur without OBS dropping frames. Stream bitrate and YouTube playback or quality transitions; do not assume source settings alone will fix it.

OBS’s buffering guide notes: “Often, you will not drop frames and still have viewers complaining about lag, buffering, or the stream constantly loading” (OBS Project, Stream Buffering Troubleshooting, June 9, 2021). A clean dropped-frame counter therefore does not rule out viewer-side buffering.

5. If the OBS preview stalls, reduce rendering pressure

If the preview itself stutters, focus on OBS’s local workload before adjusting YouTube playback settings. OBS recommends reducing resource-heavy sources, browser sources, filters, and scene complexity. For video and audio files, OBS recommends using Media Source or VLC Source rather than less suitable source approaches. See the OBS Project encoding performance guide, June 12, 2021.

  • Check whether the pause occurs only in scenes with more sources or filters.
  • Reduce unnecessary browser sources, filters, and visual layers, then switch scenes again to see whether the preview remains smooth.
  • Keep the media source type appropriate to the job: Media Source for a local file or VLC Video Source for a playlist.

6. If frames are dropped, investigate the connection to YouTube

A rising dropped-frame count points to frames not reaching the ingest server reliably; it is distinct from a source that pauses inside OBS. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for stable upload capacity, an appropriate bitrate, connection problems, and software that may interfere with the connection. Follow the OBS Project connection troubleshooting guide, September 30, 2024.

  • Check whether the counter rises specifically during scene changes or throughout the stream.
  • Confirm that the bitrate is suitable for the available, stable upload capacity; a bitrate that the connection cannot sustain can cause delivery problems.
  • Look for connection instability or software interfering with OBS’s connection to the ingest server.

Do not treat dropped frames as proof that the media source is misconfigured, or a lack of dropped frames as proof the stream is buffering-free. They indicate different parts of the path and call for different checks.

7. Treat YouTube quality transitions as a separate issue

OBS says YouTube transcodes all streams. Its transcoding guidance explains that consistent keyframe intervals can help viewers move smoothly between available quality options. This guidance concerns stream quality transitions; it does not establish that changing keyframes repairs a gap caused by a source restarting or reloading when a scene changes. See the OBS Project transcoding guide, June 9, 2021.
