Use a systemd service to start FFmpeg when a headless Raspberry Pi boots. First make the FFmpeg command work interactively, then run it as a service, enable the service at boot, and verify the stream after a real reboot. The exact FFmpeg input and YouTube output settings depend on your source and current YouTube Live instructions; this guide provides a safe service outline, not a ready-to-run YouTube command.
What you need to decide first
A Raspberry Pi can launch a long-running FFmpeg process at startup, but the title alone does not determine what FFmpeg should capture. Identify the actual input—a file, network source, pipe, or capture device—and test that source and the intended output before configuring automatic startup. FFmpeg’s documented command structure is ffmpeg [global_options] { [input_file_options] -i input_url } ... [output_file_options] output_url. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation; its documentation is regenerated nightly, so consult the locally installed documentation if the Pi has an older build. The FFmpeg documentation index explains this distinction.
- A Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS and boot media. Raspberry Pi recommends 8 GB as a starting storage capacity for Raspberry Pi OS Lite; that is not a universal minimum for every OS or streaming workload. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
- A way to administer the Pi without a monitor, such as SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect, configured during imaging if appropriate.
- A tested FFmpeg command and the current YouTube Live ingest instructions for your account. Confirm the stream endpoint, key workflow, and encoder requirements in YouTube’s current documentation before streaming; do not rely on old examples.
- A service account that can read the input or access the capture hardware, plus network access when the service starts.
Prepare and test FFmpeg before automating it
Set up headless access
Install Raspberry Pi OS on supported boot media. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite for headless setups and describes configuring network access and remote administration during imaging in its getting-started guide. Choose the board, storage, power supply, and capture source for the actual workload rather than assuming one model or camera fits every stream.
Run the real command interactively
Use the installed FFmpeg binary and the input source you intend to keep running. Confirm that FFmpeg can open the source and produce the desired output before involving systemd. The output options, encoding settings, and YouTube destination must match the source and YouTube’s current instructions; this guide does not supply unverified values or a copy-and-paste ingest command. Never place a real stream key in a published example, source repository, or log.

Choose how systemd should launch FFmpeg
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct FFmpeg invocation | One FFmpeg process with no shell pipeline or setup commands | Executable path, arguments, environment, working directory, and device permissions |
| Wrapper script | A producer-to-FFmpeg pipeline or preparatory shell steps | Valid shebang, executable permission, quoting, exit behavior, and safe secret handling |
| Desktop-session autostart | The stream must run within a graphical login session | It depends on the graphical session and user login, so it is less suitable for unattended headless operation |
A systemd unit’s ExecStart is not a shell command line. Shell syntax such as an unquoted pipeline, redirection, variable expansion, or && chaining does not work there by default. For those cases, put the logic in an executable script and have systemd launch the script. A 2019 Raspberry Pi forum example is useful for understanding the question people ask, but its pipeline-in-ExecStart example predates current Raspberry Pi OS and FFmpeg configurations and should not be copied as a current template.
Create a systemd service for boot startup
The following is a structural outline, not a turnkey YouTube command. Replace the placeholders with a tested command and actual local paths. Confirm the installed FFmpeg path and the directives supported by the Pi’s installed systemd version using local documentation such as man systemd.service and man systemd.unit.

- Choose a service user. Replace
YOUR_PI_USERwith an unprivileged account that can access the source. If it is a camera or other device, check its permissions for that account rather than running the whole stream as root without a specific need. - Set paths and arguments. Verify the FFmpeg executable path on this installation. Use absolute paths where practical. If the command needs shell syntax, use a wrapper script with a valid shebang and executable permissions, then set
ExecStartto that script. - Protect credentials. Keep the stream key out of public unit files, repositories, and logs. A root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions or another appropriate secret-handling method may be used. Ensure the script passes secrets safely and does not print them.
- Save the unit. Create a file such as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. Use a name that is easy to identify in service and journal commands. - Reload and start it. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service. Checksudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceandsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -bfor errors. - Enable it for boot. Once it works when started manually, run
sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service. Reboot the Pi and inspect the service and YouTube Live control room before treating the setup as successful.
Make network and device readiness part of the test
The outline requests network-online.target, but that target only helps when the installed network manager provides and enables its corresponding wait-online service. It does not prove DNS resolution, an internet route, or access to YouTube. Likewise, systemd ordering cannot make a camera or other capture device usable if it is not ready or the service account lacks permission. Test boot behavior on the actual Pi and network rather than assuming that After=network.target or After=network-online.target guarantees a working connection.
Use restart behavior without mistaking it for stream health
Restart=on-failure can relaunch FFmpeg when the process exits unsuccessfully; RestartSec=5 adds a pause before an attempted restart in this outline. Choose the policy and delay for the intended stream and investigate repeated failures. Restarting cannot correct a bad key, unavailable input, encoder overload, or missing internet. An active systemd service only says that the process is running; it does not prove that YouTube has accepted the ingest or that viewers can see a live event.

Troubleshoot startup and streaming failures
- The service exits immediately: inspect
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceandsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b. Check the executable and script paths, permissions, working directory, environment, and whether the same command succeeds outside systemd. - FFmpeg cannot reach YouTube: test DNS and internet connectivity from the Pi. Re-check the current endpoint and key in the account’s YouTube Live setup; those details must come from current YouTube instructions.
- A camera works interactively but not in the service: compare the interactive and service users and verify device permissions and readiness. Avoid switching the whole service to root as a shortcut.
- The service keeps restarting: read FFmpeg’s errors in the journal and check source availability, CPU capacity, network quality, and credential validity. A restart policy supervises a process; it does not diagnose or repair these conditions.
- The process runs but the event is not visible: check YouTube’s current live control-room state and ingest diagnostics. A running FFmpeg process is not proof of a public stream.
- Startup is delayed or fails during boot: verify that the network manager has a functioning wait-online service and that the capture device is ready. Network ordering alone does not ensure internet reachability.
