The reliable setup requires an eligible YouTube channel, a protected stream key, enough CPU and outbound transfer for your chosen video settings, and a supervisor that restarts the encoder if it fails. Lightsail is burstable, so AWS advises using EC2 for consistently high-CPU workloads such as video encoding; test your specific workload rather than assuming a Lightsail bundle will sustain it.
Before you build: confirm YouTube eligibility
A cloud server cannot bypass YouTube account restrictions. YouTube requires a verified channel, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before provisioning a server. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
All content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Repeating a video continuously does not exempt it from copyright or other enforcement. Use footage and audio you have the rights to stream, and do not assume that a feed will remain live indefinitely: YouTube, the encoder, the host, or network connectivity can interrupt it.
Get the YouTube ingest details and choose encoder settings
Find the stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream, then copy its server URL and stream key.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into public shell history, logs, or an exposed configuration file. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube’s live settings.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Use the RTMPS server URL supplied by YouTube rather than assuming a URL or key format. The server URL and key are separate values. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also covers supported formats, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe intervals.

Match the output to the source and available compute
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, as YouTube recommends.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by the source and encoder, and consult YouTube’s current recommendations for the exact combination.
- Confirm the encoder can produce a supported video and audio format. Do not select a high-resolution output simply because YouTube accepts it; the instance must encode it continuously without CPU saturation.
The YouTube recommendations are platform guidance, not evidence that a particular Lightsail size can encode every listed format. A pre-recorded, low-complexity loop may take less CPU than a high-resolution camera feed, but there is no benchmark here for either workload on a Mumbai instance.
Provision Lightsail in Mumbai with capacity in mind
- In the AWS Lightsail console, create a Linux instance and select the Mumbai region.
- Choose a plan only after estimating both sustained encoder CPU use and outbound data transfer. Lightsail bundles include vCPU, RAM, storage, and a transfer allowance; check the current Mumbai plan terms and prices in AWS before committing.
- Connect for administration over SSH. In the Lightsail networking firewall, allow inbound SSH only from the administrator’s IP range. If IPv6 is enabled, review its firewall rules separately from IPv4.
- Install an encoder appropriate for your distribution and source files. The precise packages and commands depend on the Linux image and encoder version; validate them on the target instance rather than treating an untested command as universal.
The stream is outbound from the instance to YouTube; Lightsail firewalls permit outbound traffic. A static IPv4 address can be useful for stable administration or allowlists, but it is not inherently required to send the encoder feed to YouTube. AWS explains the firewall behavior in its Lightsail firewall documentation.

Estimate Mumbai data transfer before leaving the stream on
Calculate transfer from the encoded bitrate and planned uptime, then compare it with the allowance for the specific Mumbai bundle. A practical estimate is:
Transfer in gigabytes ≈ bitrate in megabits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000

This decimal estimate excludes protocol overhead, audio if it is not included in the bitrate, and reconnects; leave headroom. For example, at 4 Mb/s for 30 days continuously, the estimate is about 1,296 GB before that extra allowance: 4 × 2,592,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. Use the actual combined encoded bitrate when calculating your own feed.
AWS says Mumbai plans have half the transfer allowance of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer may incur charges. Check the current terms rather than relying on a figure from another region or an old plan page. See AWS Lightsail pricing and transfer terms.

Run the encoder as a supervised service
Starting an encoder in an interactive SSH session is not enough for an always-on stream: the process may stop when the session ends or after a failure. Configure a service manager or supervisor to start the process at boot and restart it after failure. Keep the stream key in a protected configuration location with restrictive permissions, not in a world-readable script or logs.
The exact service definition depends on the operating system, encoder version, and command you have validated. Test the behavior deliberately: stop the encoder, confirm the supervisor restarts it, reboot the instance, and verify the feed returns. A restart policy handles process failure, not every possible YouTube-side interruption, invalid credential, or host/network outage.

Test the feed and monitor it
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room for an incoming signal.
- Review stream health and confirm the video and audio are correct before making the stream public or relying on it.
- Test a reconnect by restarting the encoder, then observe whether the supervisor and YouTube ingest recover as expected.
- Monitor CPU utilization and outbound transfer over time. If CPU remains saturated, reduce the encoding workload or move to compute designed for sustained high CPU use.
YouTube advises testing before a live stream and reviewing stream health. Its encoder setup guidance covers stream health and recommended settings. AWS describes Lightsail instances as burstable and recommends EC2 for workloads that need consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding; suitability is workload- and plan-specific. See AWS Lightsail instance documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong server URL or stream key, unsupported output, or encoder not running | Compare the URL and key with Live Control Room, inspect encoder status, and confirm the output format and connection method. |
| The encoder connects but stream health is poor | Unstable output, unsuitable bitrate or keyframe interval, or insufficient CPU/network capacity | Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, verify the current YouTube settings guidance, and inspect CPU and transfer. |
| The stream stops after SSH disconnects or a reboot | The encoder is running only in an interactive session or is not enabled at boot | Configure and test a supervisor with boot startup and failure restart. |
| It works initially, then degrades or fails under load | Sustained encoding may exceed the burstable instance’s CPU capacity | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, or evaluate compute intended for sustained high CPU performance. |
| The key appears in command history or logs | Credential was passed or recorded insecurely | Reset the stream key and move it to a protected configuration location with restrictive permissions. |
| Unexpected transfer charges or exhausted allowance | Continuous outbound data exceeded the Mumbai bundle allowance | Recalculate from actual bitrate and uptime, check current Mumbai terms, and reduce the stream bitrate if appropriate. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Lightsail instance need an inbound streaming port open?
No. The encoder sends the feed outbound to YouTube; restrict inbound access to what you need for administration.
Does a static IPv4 address have to be attached for YouTube ingest?
No. It may help with stable administration or allowlists, but it is not inherently required for the outbound feed.
