To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a Contabo VPS, run FFmpeg on the VPS, have it read the file at real-time speed, and send the output to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Before choosing a resolution or a Contabo plan, check YouTube’s current encoder settings and measure the VPS’s sustained upload speed: the plan’s suitability depends on bandwidth, traffic limits, and—if you transcode—the CPU available.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  • A Contabo VPS that can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate with headroom for network variation. The available evidence does not establish which Contabo plan is sufficient; check current plan terms and test the server’s actual upload capacity.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS and the source video accessible there.
  • The stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, article example, or shell history.

Choose the YouTube output settings

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), supported video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds; the encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. See the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec- and format-specific details.

For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for both 720p at 30 fps and 720p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not universal settings for every codec or file. Consult the table for other resolutions and frame rates. YouTube also recommends keeping the stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom; see its streaming tips.

For example, a 14 Mbps video stream needs more than 14 Mbps of stable outbound capacity once audio and headroom are considered. If the VPS cannot sustain the target, lower the output resolution or bitrate. If the source already matches the target codec, resolution, and frame rate, copying the video stream may avoid encoding load; otherwise, transcoding uses VPS CPU. Inspect the file before deciding.

Set up the YouTube stream and VPS

  1. Enable live streaming and create a stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and set its privacy and scheduling options. Copy the exact stream URL and key shown for the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the setup flow.
  2. Prepare the file and inspect its media details. Upload the recording to the VPS or make it available there. Check its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and audio tracks. Use those details to decide whether to copy streams or transcode them to settings that YouTube supports.
  3. Install FFmpeg. Use the package or installation method suitable for the VPS operating system and confirm the installed build can use the selected output protocol and codecs. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation notes that options apply to the next input or output, so their order matters.
  4. Check sustained outbound capacity and plan limits. Measure the VPS connection under conditions representative of the broadcast. Check current Contabo terms for included traffic and any overage rules, and account for CPU if transcoding. A plan name or advertised port speed alone does not establish that a VPS can sustain the stream.

Start a test stream with FFmpeg

Use a private test—unlisted is useful when appropriate—and verify the result in Live Control Room before relying on the setup for a scheduled broadcast. This example loops a file and transcodes it to H.264 and AAC at 30 fps. The 4,500 kbps video rate is only an illustration; select a rate for your chosen resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s current guidance and confirm the VPS can sustain it.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'

Replace the path and endpoint with your actual file path and the exact ingest URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not publish the populated command or save credentials in a world-readable script. Endpoint format and protocol support can vary. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update FFmpeg; YouTube’s stream settings and key guidance covers managing stream keys.

FFmpeg’s -re option is equivalent to -readrate 1: it reads the file at its native rate so packets are sent in real time rather than as fast as the VPS can process them. FFmpeg documents this behavior and the RTMP/RTMPS protocols in its command-line reference and protocol reference. The sample uses a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps by setting GOP size to 60; if you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to retain a two-second interval.

  1. Start FFmpeg and wait for the stream preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  2. Check the picture, audio, and stream-health indicators. If the stream is scheduled for manual start, start the event in Live Control Room after confirming the preview.
  3. Monitor the test long enough to catch dropped frames, buffering, or audio problems before using the setup for an important broadcast.
  4. When finished, end the YouTube event and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder streaming guide.

Choose a Contabo VPS without guessing

No specific Contabo VPS plan can be recommended from the available plan evidence. Compare current offerings using the requirements of your intended stream rather than assuming a particular plan or port speed is adequate.

  • Traffic allowance: check included monthly data, billing period, and overage terms against the planned broadcast duration and bitrate.
  • Network reliability and location: review current provider terms and test the network from the actual VPS. Do not treat an advertised connection speed as proof of sustained throughput.

Troubleshoot common failures

No preview appears in Live Control Room

  • Confirm FFmpeg is still running and that the full RTMPS endpoint and stream key were copied correctly.
  • Check whether the key was reset or the selected stream changed; use the currently displayed URL and key.
  • Verify that the FFmpeg build supports the selected output protocol and that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint.

Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health

  • Measure sustained VPS upload during the stream. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if it cannot remain below the available capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Check current VPS traffic limits and any throttling or overage conditions.
  • If transcoding, check CPU load. Reduce the encoding workload or choose a lower output target if the server cannot encode in real time.

Video or audio is missing, wrong, or out of sync

  • Inspect the source’s tracks and codecs, then make sure FFmpeg is selecting the intended video and audio streams.
  • Use codecs YouTube supports for ingest and check the preview and stream-health details before starting the public event.
  • If copying the source streams produces an incompatible result, transcode to a supported format and confirm the VPS has enough CPU.

The stream ends when the file finishes

The sample includes -stream_loop -1, which repeats the input indefinitely. Confirm it is present and placed before the input it applies to. Without looping, FFmpeg reaches the end of the file and stops sending the feed.

The stream key may have leaked

Reset the key in YouTube Studio, then replace it in the VPS command or protected configuration. Never leave a live key in a public repository, webpage, or shared transcript.

Copyright, reused material, and broadcast planning

A live encoder feed does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in the recording. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. Replaying a recording as a live stream also does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; reused-content decisions depend on YouTube’s policies and the channel’s content. These are separate from whether FFmpeg can deliver the file successfully.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than learning to operate a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera feeds. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
