Decide what “diverse publishing” means for your group—authors and illustrators from underrepresented communities, stories and characters that are often left out, independent and small presses, translated literature, publishing-industry decisions, or a combination. Then agree on a repeatable meeting schedule, an accessible way to choose books, discussion norms, and a first title that members can realistically obtain and read.
A strong club does not treat one writer or book as a spokesperson for an entire identity group. It gives members room to enjoy, dislike, question, or abandon a book while learning from perspectives and publishing routes they may encounter less often.
Define what your club means by “diverse publishing”
The phrase can describe several different projects. If you do not define the emphasis, members may arrive with incompatible expectations: one person may expect books by authors from historically excluded communities, while another may expect every book to center identity or address discrimination directly.
Write a one-sentence purpose before inviting people. For example: “We read books that broaden whose stories and publishing histories we encounter.” Use that sentence to explain the invitation and to test possible titles.

Choose a focus, or combine a few deliberately
| Possible emphasis | What it means in practice | Questions to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Authors and creators | Select books by writers, illustrators or translators whose work is underrepresented in your usual reading. | Which regions, languages, identities or career stages do you want to include? |
| Representation in the work | Look at whose lives, communities and viewpoints are centered, regardless of the creator’s biography. | How will you avoid treating a character or plot as an “authentic” account of everyone in a group? |
| Publishing routes | Include independent and small presses, translated works, debut authors or formats outside the mainstream bestseller pipeline. | Can members obtain these editions through local libraries, ebook lending or interlibrary loan? |
| Publishing as a subject | Read books alongside essays, interviews or reporting about acquisition, editing, marketing, translation and access. | Will industry discussion supplement the literary discussion or become the main purpose? |
| Mixed approach | Rotate among the categories while keeping a clear annual or seasonal theme. | How will you explain a title’s fit when it does not address identity explicitly? |
A focus is a selection guide, not a requirement that every title deliver a lesson about identity. Members should be able to discuss craft, humor, structure, pleasure and disagreement as well as social context.
Set boundaries that protect members and the books
- Do not select a book only because it is expected to explain a community to everyone else.
- Do not ask a member to speak for an entire race, ethnicity, religion, disability group, nationality, sexuality or class.
- Say whether the club will include memoir, fiction, poetry, graphic work, children’s or young-adult books, and nonfiction.
- Tell invitees how much reading is expected and whether partial participation is welcome.
- Explain how the group will handle books containing racism, misogyny, homophobia, ableism, violence, abuse or other difficult material.
Invite a founding group that can actually meet
Begin with people you know, or make a public invitation through a library, community group, workplace, local bookshop or neighborhood network. The club can be informal—a friends’ group or a group chat—or a recurring community meeting with a published schedule. The important thing is to describe the project accurately before people commit.
Put the practical details in the invitation
- The club’s one-sentence purpose and the kinds of books you expect to read.
- Meeting frequency, likely day and time, and whether the first meeting is in person, online or hybrid.
- The expected reading pace and whether audiobooks, ebooks, large-print editions or excerpts are acceptable.
- Whether members must buy a copy, or whether library borrowing and shared copies are part of the plan.
- Any access information: step-free entry, seating, captions, screen-reader-friendly materials, quiet space, childcare expectations or a no-cost option.
- How people can suggest titles, vote, facilitate and opt out of a discussion.
Ask prospective members what would make regular attendance possible. That conversation may reveal that an evening meeting excludes shift workers, that an online-only format creates technology barriers, or that a book’s price makes the proposed schedule unrealistic.
Choose a format and cadence that reduce barriers
Homes, cafés, libraries and community spaces can work for in-person meetings. Online meetings can include people outside one neighborhood, while a hybrid arrangement can preserve local connection for those who want it. Compare the options before choosing rather than assuming one format is automatically more inclusive.
| Format | Advantages to consider | Risks to plan for | Useful safeguards |
|---|---|---|---|
| In person | Natural conversation, easier sharing of printed pages, and no requirement for a stable internet connection. | Travel, venue cost, mobility barriers, weather and limited geographic reach. | Choose an accessible venue, publish transit and entry details, and provide a remote or written way to contribute when possible. |
| Online | Removes travel, can widen participation and may support captions or chat-based comments. | Unequal devices or bandwidth, screen fatigue, privacy concerns and people speaking over one another. | Send joining instructions early, enable captions where available, use chat and hand-raising, and avoid recording without explicit agreement. |
| Hybrid | Offers local presence while allowing remote participation. | Remote members can become observers if microphones, cameras or facilitation are poor. | Test sound, assign someone to watch the chat, and give remote participants the same turn-taking opportunities. |
Set a recurring meeting time
Use the first meeting to agree how often the club meets and choose a regular day and time. A monthly schedule gives members more reading time; a shorter interval may suit novellas, poetry or a group that wants momentum. State whether each meeting covers one shared book or whether members read at their own pace and bring separate recommendations.
Publish the next few dates in a shared calendar or group thread. A predictable schedule is more sustainable than arranging every meeting from scratch.

Use a fair, transparent book-selection process
Selection can be democratic without becoming exhausting. Explain the method before the first vote, including what happens when a title is unavailable, too long for the agreed schedule or inaccessible in the formats members need.
| Method | How it works | Best when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotating selector | A different member proposes the next title, using the club’s stated focus and practical criteria. | The group wants variety and a clear individual responsibility. | One person’s preferences can dominate unless the criteria and veto process are explicit. |
| Nominations and vote | Members submit titles, the group checks basic access information, then votes. | Many members want a direct say in each choice. | Popular titles can crowd out less familiar voices; set a rotation or theme if that matters to the purpose. |
| Theme with choice | The club sets a theme—such as translated fiction or books from small presses—and chooses a title within it. | The group wants a coherent season while preserving member choice. | A broad theme can still produce a narrow list unless someone checks geography, genre and format. |
| Curated shortlist | A facilitator or small committee proposes several titles that meet agreed criteria; members select one. | The group needs efficient choices or has limited time to research availability. | Explain who curated the list and invite feedback so the process remains accountable. |
Evaluate every candidate title on the same axes
- Fit: How does the book serve the club’s purpose without being treated as a complete account of an identity?
- Interest: Do enough members want to spend time with it?
- Length and pace: Can members finish it within the agreed interval?
- Format: Are print, ebook, audiobook, large-print or other accessible editions available?
- Cost and supply: Can members borrow it, buy it locally or obtain it through interlibrary loan?
- Content: Are there themes or scenes members should know about in advance?
- Range: Over several choices, are you varying genre, period, country, language and publishing route where that serves the purpose?
Keep a title in consideration even when it does not discuss identity directly if its authorship, form, translation history or route to publication advances the club’s stated aim. Conversely, a book that appears to fit demographically may not suit the group’s reading pace, access needs or interest.

Build a varied reading list and make access part of selection
Publisher lists and library resources are useful starting points, not complete catalogs. Penguin’s Lit in Colour guide includes titles such as Don’t Touch My Hair by Emma Dabiri, Poor by Caleb Femi, The Million Pieces of Neena Gill by Emma Smith-Barton and Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson. These are UK-oriented recommendations; check local editions, prices, formats and stock for your members’ country.
The same guide lists purchase links to Amazon UK, Bookshop.org and other booksellers. Treat those links as examples of where an edition may be found, not as a guarantee of current inventory or suitability for every reader. Verify the ISBN, format, translation and delivery region before announcing a title.
Use libraries before asking everyone to buy
Ask a librarian about holds, multiple-copy collections, ebook and audiobook lending, interlibrary loan, accessible formats and local reading programs. The American Library Association’s Great Stories Club provides participating libraries with free materials, including book lists and discussion questions, and has been used both in person and online with different youth groups. Check current eligibility and materials with the library or the program before assuming it applies to a general adult club.
A library partnership can also provide a neutral meeting room, publicity, technology support and a way for people who cannot purchase a book to participate. It does not remove the need to check whether enough copies can be obtained in time.

Keep identity data collection proportional
The Publishers Association’s Author Diversity Report and Toolkit, published on 17 September 2021, is designed for publishing companies collecting information about authors, illustrators and translators. Its questionnaire guidance covers categories including ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and socioeconomic class.
That toolkit may help organizers understand why categories require care, but it is not a reason to survey members about sensitive identities. Collect such information only for a clear, consensual purpose, explain who will see it and how long it will be kept, and offer a genuinely optional response. A book club can plan accessible meetings without requiring members to disclose personal identities.
Prepare discussions that go beyond plot summary
Bring several open questions, but do not script every answer. Penguin’s guidance recommends preparing discussion points and consulting existing questions or author interviews. The BC Office of the Human Rights Commissioner’s discussion guidance recommends reviewing a guide’s summary, discussing themes and connections, creating a group agreement, using turn-taking and taking breaks when useful.
Questions that invite analysis without demanding representation
- Which scene, character, image or idea stayed with you, and why?
- Whose perspective is centered, and whose perspective is limited, absent or filtered through another character?
- How did the form, genre, language, translation or structure shape your reading?
- What did you admire, question, dislike or find unresolved?
- How do the book’s publishing history, cover, marketing or stated audience affect the way you encountered it?
- What connections did you make to other books, films, reporting or experiences?
- What would you like to read alongside this title?
Ask members to speak from their own experience rather than presenting themselves as authorities on a whole group. A member may pass on a question. Invite quieter participants without putting them on the spot—for example, offer a few minutes of writing or chat responses before open discussion.
Write a group agreement
At the first meeting, create and approve a short agreement. It can include:
- Listen to understand; do not interrupt or ridicule.
- Critique ideas, language, choices and institutions rather than assigning motives to people in the room.
- Use “I” statements for personal reactions.
- Do not require anyone to disclose trauma, identity or personal history.
- Respect a pass, a pause and a request to return to the text.
- Challenge stereotypes and harmful claims without turning one member into the group’s educator.
- Keep personal stories shared in the club private unless the speaker gives permission.
Handle disagreement and difficult material
If a conversation becomes tense, restate the relevant agreement and ask which passage or idea is being discussed. Separate a critique of a book from a judgment about a member. If racism, violence, abuse or another difficult subject surfaces, pause and ask whether the group wants a break, a change of question or a moment to read the passage silently. Return to the agreed norms rather than expecting the most affected person to resolve the discomfort.

Disagreement is a legitimate outcome. Members may enjoy a book, dislike it, or disagree about its interpretation; none of those responses requires a single “correct” reaction.
Rotate the work so the club can last
Choose the next book before the meeting ends, record the decision in a shared calendar or group thread, and assign the next facilitator or host. Rotating roles prevents one person from carrying every administrative and emotional task.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Useful rotating roles
- Facilitator: prepares prompts, opens and closes the conversation, and watches the time.
- Access coordinator: checks editions, library copies, captions, venue details and other practical needs.
- Host or technology lead: arranges the room or online link and tests sound and display.
- Timekeeper or participation monitor: notices interruptions, invites people who have not spoken and suggests a break.
- Bookkeeper: records the next title, dates and agreed actions without recording personal disclosures.
Members should not be made to feel they have failed if they dislike a book or do not finish it. Offer a spoiler-aware way to join with partial reading, an audiobook, a review or selected excerpts when the group agrees. Respecting different reading paces is more sustainable than treating completion as a test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the publishing context without overstating the evidence
A diverse-publishing club responds to a documented historical imbalance, but one statistic should not be turned into a current global claim. PEN America’s 2022 summary of Reading Between the Lines reports that data from McGill University Professor Richard So found 95 percent of books published in the United States from 1950 to 2018 were written by white authors. The figure describes U.S. books across that historical period; it is not a current estimate for every country, format or publishing category.
“Publishers are the curators of America’s stories,” said Clarisse Rosaz Shariyf, chief program officer for PEN America’s Literary Programs. “They are gatekeepers who decide whose stories will be told and whose will not. They have a moral and social obligation to ensure that the pluralism of American society is presented more robustly in our literary canon.”
Use that context to explain why selection and access matter, not to claim that a club automatically changes industry representation. The practical club-starting guidance available does not establish an effect size showing that diverse-publishing clubs improve representation or engagement. Your club’s value can be more immediate: widening what members encounter, creating a sustained conversation and making room for books that might otherwise be overlooked.

A launch checklist for the first meeting
- Write the purpose. State what kinds of diversity and publishing routes the club will explore, and what is outside scope.
- Invite members honestly. Include reading pace, access expectations, meeting format and whether purchasing a copy is required.
- Choose the recurring schedule. Confirm a regular day and time, venue or online platform, and how hybrid participation will work.
- Approve discussion norms. Agree on listening, turn-taking, passing, privacy, disagreement and breaks.
- Select the first title. Apply the same checks for fit, interest, length, format, cost, availability and content.
- Check access before announcing it. Confirm library copies, editions, translations, audiobooks, large-print options and realistic delivery time.
- Assign the first roles. Name a facilitator, access or technology contact and someone to record the next date and title.
- Prepare prompts. Bring open questions about perspective, form, publishing context, pleasure and unresolved ideas.
- Make room for passes. Tell members they may decline a question, contribute in writing or discuss an unfinished book within the agreed spoiler rules.
- Schedule continuity. Choose the next title and facilitator before people leave, then post the details where everyone can find them.
Troubleshoot the problems that commonly stop a club
The chosen book is too expensive or unavailable
Check library systems, interlibrary loan, used copies, legal ebook lending and alternate formats. If supply remains inadequate, use the selection process to choose another title rather than asking members to absorb an unexpected cost. Record the access criterion so it is applied to future choices.
The book is longer than the schedule allows
Renegotiate the reading interval, split the discussion into sections, or select a shorter work that serves the same purpose. Do not quietly change the expected pace after members have committed.
One person speaks for most of the meeting
Return to the group agreement, use a round of brief first responses, invite written or chat contributions, and rotate facilitation. The aim is to create openings, not to force a reluctant member to perform.
Members disagree about whether a title fits the focus
Use the purpose statement and selection criteria rather than debating a member’s identity or intentions. Ask which element—authorship, representation, translation, press, form or industry context—made the title relevant, and whether that rationale is clear enough for the group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA discussion causes harm
Pause, name the behavior or claim that conflicts with the agreement, and offer a break. Follow up privately when appropriate, ask what repair is needed, and decide whether the group needs to revise its norms before the next meeting. Do not make the person most affected responsible for designing the response.
What success looks like for this kind of club
A successful club is not one in which every member reaches the same interpretation or every selection perfectly represents every community. It is a club with a clear purpose, fair choices, usable access information, discussion practices that protect participation, and enough shared responsibility to continue. Review the reading list periodically: note which genres, countries, languages, presses and perspectives have appeared, then adjust future selections to match the purpose you actually set.
