To display YouTube chat for viewers beside your video in Streamlabs Talk Studio, connect YouTube to your Streamlabs account, then add the integrated Chat Box widget from Apps (Shift+P) > Widgets > Connect Streamlabs. Turn on Chat Box, select it on the canvas, and resize or reposition it. If you only need to read chat while hosting, use Talk Studio’s separate Chat panel (Shift+C)—that panel is for the operator, not the audience-facing stream.
Choose the right chat view

The distinction matters: the studio chat panel is not an overlay. Streamlabs says private chat is for guests and is not displayed during the livestream. To put chat on the audience’s video, use the Chat Box widget.
Connect YouTube and add the Chat Box
- Connect YouTube to Streamlabs. In Streamlabs account settings, open Platforms and connect the YouTube account you use for the stream. Streamlabs’ Chat Box documentation lists YouTube as a supported platform. Streamlabs’ Chat Box guide and its Talk Studio Chat guide describe the account and widget workflow.
- Open the widget controls in Talk Studio. In Talk Studio, open Apps (Shift+P), choose Widgets, then select Connect Streamlabs.
- Enable Chat Box. Switch on Chat Box in the Streamlabs widget list. The widget should appear on the main canvas.
- Place and size it. Select the Chat Box on the canvas and drag its corners to resize it. Move it to a clear area beside the video, keeping the video and any important on-screen content visible.
- Adjust what viewers see. In the Streamlabs Dashboard, go to All Widgets > Chat Box. Use the available controls for platform selection and visual style, including font color and font size, then check the result on the Talk Studio canvas before going live.
These steps reflect Streamlabs’ published interface guidance; button names and account eligibility can change. If a widget or setting is missing, confirm that you are signed into the intended Streamlabs account and check the current dashboard and Talk Studio interface.
Check the result before going live
- Confirm the Chat Box is enabled and visible on the canvas, not merely that the operator chat panel is open.
- Make sure YouTube is selected as a platform in the Chat Box settings and the intended YouTube account is connected in Streamlabs.
- Resize the widget so message text is legible at the final video size; overly small font or a narrow box can make chat difficult to follow.
- Verify that the widget does not cover faces, captions, or other key material in your video layout.
If chat is not appearing
- The host can see chat, but viewers cannot: You may have opened the Chat panel with Shift+C. Enable the on-canvas Chat Box through Apps (Shift+P) > Widgets > Connect Streamlabs.
- The widget is present but shows no YouTube messages: Check the connected account under Streamlabs Platforms, then check the platform selection under All Widgets > Chat Box.
- The widget is difficult to read or obscures the video: Select it on the canvas and adjust its position and corners; use the Dashboard’s font and style options to improve readability.
- The widget option is unavailable: The published guides do not establish every current browser, plan, or regional eligibility condition. Check the current Streamlabs interface and account settings; if access still appears unavailable, contact Streamlabs support.
Talk Studio overlay versus YouTube’s embedded player chat
The Chat Box is an overlay rendered as part of your stream layout. It is separate from YouTube’s own chat interface: YouTube Help says Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not on embedded players. If someone watches your video through an embedded player, do not assume YouTube’s native chat will appear there; that limitation is different from whether a Chat Box overlay is included in your video.
