OBS displays the information; it does not identify songs by itself. Choose a source of track metadata that matches how your music plays, then test that titles update at transitions and after interruptions.
Choose how the stream will get track information
The right method depends on whether your lofi music plays in a known order, comes from software that exposes track metadata, or is an unknown audio mix. A title overlay is only as accurate as its metadata source.
Known playlist or track sequence
If tracks play in a fixed, curated order, an overlay may be able to read titles from YouTube chapters or a video-description playlist. An OBS Forums resource called Music on stream describes those inputs. This is third-party community documentation, not a built-in OBS capability or a guarantee that the overlay will fit your current setup. Confirm that the listed track order and timing match what your stream actually plays.
Player software provides metadata
If your playback software exposes the current track title and artist, an integration can pass that information to an overlay or a text file. For example, an OBS Forums listing for Melody Monitor describes a playback-metadata approach for Windows and specifies an OBS minimum version. Check the listing for compatibility with your operating system and OBS version before building your workflow around it.

Audio recognition
A recognition overlay listens to the audio and attempts to identify the track. Glitch Studios describes a Browser Source workflow for its Now Playing overlay. Recognition can be wrong or delayed, especially with quiet, obscure, remixed, or overlapping audio. Treat claims about accuracy or uptime on a vendor page as the vendor’s claims, not as a guarantee.
Add the song display to an OBS scene
OBS offers two ways to render the display. A Browser Source embeds a web page in a scene; a Text Source can read text from a file. In either case, a separate overlay, integration, or script must supply the changing song information.

- Identify the playback source. Decide whether titles will come from playlist metadata, player metadata, or audio recognition. Verify that the chosen method supports your player and operating system.
- Add the display in OBS. In the scene you use for the stream, select Sources > + > Browser to add a web overlay. Alternatively, select Sources > + > Text and enable its text-file input if an integration or script updates a file with the current track. OBS’s Browser Source and Text Sources documentation covers these source types.
- Position and size the source. Place the title and artist over the artwork where they remain readable without covering important visual details. Preview the scene at the stream’s intended output size, not just in a large editing preview.
- Test actual track changes. Compare the displayed title with the audio across several transitions. Check what happens when playback pauses, the scene changes, the browser source refreshes, OBS restarts, or the stream reconnects.
- Check for stale information. Confirm that the display clears or updates when a track changes and does not keep showing the previous song after an interruption. If the overlay is file-driven, verify that the integration continues to update the file.
Keep the title accurate and unobtrusive
- Use metadata that follows the actual playback order; a playlist label is misleading if tracks are skipped or reordered.
- Check synchronization at more than one transition. A correct title at startup does not prove later updates work.
- Make the label legible at normal viewing size, with enough contrast against the artwork.
- Review a third-party overlay’s compatibility, maintenance, privacy, and data handling before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. Whether it needs an account or sends playback or audio data to a service depends on that tool; check its own documentation.
Song attribution does not grant streaming rights
A song label identifies music; it does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such content, YouTube may show a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. YouTube also warns that licensed third-party content may still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its allowlist. Review YouTube Help’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams, establish the necessary streaming rights, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable.
