To stream with FFmpeg from an AWS Lightsail VPS in India, create a Linux instance in Asia Pacific (Mumbai, ap-south-1), connect over SSH, install an FFmpeg build that supports your chosen codec and RTMPS, then publish to the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Test with the intended video and audio, and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback before relying on the setup.
This guide covers the server, YouTube settings, network and transfer considerations, and common failure points. It does not prescribe a universal Lightsail size or an unverified FFmpeg command: the right plan and command depend on your source, whether you re-encode, and the FFmpeg build on your chosen operating-system image.
What you need before you begin
- An AWS account with access to Amazon Lightsail.
- A Linux Lightsail instance in Mumbai, if hosting in India is a requirement.
- SSH access to administer the server.
- A YouTube channel eligible to create the live stream you intend to use, and access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- A source video or live input that FFmpeg can read, plus an FFmpeg build with the required encoder and output protocol.
- A plan for video quality, continuous runtime, outbound data transfer, and stream-key security.
Hosting the encoder in India does not guarantee the lowest latency for every viewer. AWS advises choosing a region near users for latency; the best region depends on where the stream originates, where the audience is, and any operational requirements.
1. Create a Lightsail instance in Mumbai
- In the Lightsail console, choose Create instance.
- Select Asia Pacific (Mumbai) (
ap-south-1). Mumbai is listed as a Lightsail region in AWS’s region and Availability Zone documentation. - Choose Linux and an operating-system-only image, such as Ubuntu, so you can install and configure FFmpeg yourself.
- Select a plan after estimating the workload and data-transfer needs described below. There is no universally suitable instance size established for every FFmpeg source or encoding task.
- Name the instance and create it.
Lightsail offers browser-based SSH access as well as ordinary SSH. Use an administrator address and credentials appropriate to the selected image, and keep administrative access restricted.

2. Decide whether to attach a static IPv4 address
A Lightsail instance’s default public IPv4 address can change after a stop and restart. If you want a stable address for administration or DNS, create a static IPv4 address in the same region and attach it to the instance. AWS says an attached static IP has no charge while attached; check AWS’s static IP documentation for current details, including any charges that may apply when an address is detached.
3. Install FFmpeg and verify the build
Connect to the instance using Lightsail’s browser-based SSH option or SSH from your computer. Install FFmpeg using the package manager and repositories for the operating-system image you selected. Package names, versions, and compiled-in features vary by image and repository, so use instructions that match that image rather than copying an installation command for a different Linux distribution.
Before configuring an event, inspect the installed build and confirm that it supports:
- The input format and any video or audio codecs your source requires.
- The output codec you plan to send to YouTube, if transcoding.
- The secure output protocol, RTMPS, if you intend to publish over it.
If the source already matches the requirements for the intended YouTube stream, stream copy can avoid the CPU cost of encoding. If you need to change codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, FFmpeg must decode and re-encode, which changes the compute requirement. Test the actual source on the selected plan; no single Lightsail bundle is established as sufficient for every input.

4. Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you will use.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg publishing configuration. Do not publish the key in shell transcripts, screenshots, public repositories, or logs.
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when it is available and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP; YouTube’s encoder settings list the supported ingest guidance.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg configuration before streaming again.
Keep the stream key out of command histories and process listings where practical. The exact way to supply credentials securely depends on how you launch and supervise FFmpeg; verify that your chosen method does not write the key to a public file or routine logs.
5. Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s encoder guidance
Choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio you actually intend to send. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The full table includes recommendations for different targets; do not extrapolate one row to other resolutions or frame rates.

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Lightsail instance can encode at that rate. Consult the complete YouTube encoder settings for the target you choose, including other resolutions, frame rates, audio, and advanced settings.
For a first test, use a target the source and instance can sustain. If you transcode, observe CPU use and output stability under representative conditions. A stream-copy workflow may have a very different compute profile, but still needs compatible input codecs and valid output settings.

6. Allow enough network capacity and estimate transfer
YouTube recommends keeping available upload bandwidth at least 20% above the stream’s total bitrate. Include both video and audio, and leave room for network variation and protocol overhead. YouTube also advises testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages while live; see its encoder setup guidance.
Continuous streaming can generate substantial outbound traffic. AWS says Lightsail instance plans in Mumbai have half the data-transfer allowance of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer may be billed. Check the current Mumbai allowance and charges for your selected plan in Lightsail pricing before choosing it; exact plan figures can change.
For a rough data estimate, multiply the total stream bitrate in megabits per second by the number of seconds streamed, then divide by eight to estimate megabytes. Convert that estimate to the billing unit AWS uses, and account for audio and overhead. This is a planning calculation, not an AWS quote or a substitute for checking the selected plan’s current terms.
7. Set inbound firewall rules conservatively
The Lightsail instance firewall controls incoming connections to its public IP. IPv4 and IPv6 rules are separate, and Lightsail’s firewall rules do not block outbound traffic. FFmpeg publishing to YouTube is an outbound connection, so this workflow does not require a public inbound media port. Do not open an inbound RTMP port unless the server has a separate role receiving streams from another encoder.

Allow SSH only from trusted administrator addresses where practical. Check both address families if you use IPv6 as well as IPv4. AWS explains these behaviors in its Lightsail firewall documentation.

- Start FFmpeg with the intended input and output configuration.
- Confirm that FFmpeg can read the source, encode or copy the streams as intended, and connect to YouTube’s endpoint.
- In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to detect the incoming stream and review its stream-health status and messages.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static or silent sample, and allow enough time to spot instability.
- If the stream will run for a long period, test the supervision and restart behavior you plan to use. A successful short connection alone does not establish that a server will recover from every failure.
Common problems and fixes
FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube
Check that the server URL and stream key match the selected YouTube stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected output protocol. Prefer RTMPS when the endpoint and build support it. Do not solve an outbound connection problem by opening an unnecessary inbound media port.
YouTube does not detect the stream or reports a configuration issue
Compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance for that target. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than assuming the instance firewall is responsible.
The stream drops frames, stalls, or becomes unstable
Check whether the instance can sustain the selected encode, whether the source itself is stable, and whether available network capacity has the recommended headroom. For a transcode, lower the target or use a compatible stream-copy path if appropriate; retest with the intended audio and movement.

The stream worked until the instance was restarted
If administration or DNS depends on the public address, check whether the instance’s dynamic IPv4 changed. A static IPv4 attached to the instance provides a stable address across stop/start events.
Unexpected data-transfer costs are possible
Compare the expected runtime and total bitrate with the current transfer allowance for the Mumbai plan. Mumbai’s allowance is lower than that of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer may be billed; verify current terms before a long-running broadcast.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
A technically valid FFmpeg stream does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its contents or that a channel complies with YouTube policies. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, including music, archival footage, and documentary clips. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content; an encoder setting cannot prevent a rights claim or establish eligibility for monetization.
