What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a holding screen that appears automatically between every video, configure your encoder or playback system to switch to a holding scene or source during each gap, then switch to the next video. YouTube’s Take a Break feature is for a temporary, manually ended break—not an automatic recurring playlist interstitial.
Choose between a recurring interstitial and a manual break
| What you need | Use | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| A screen between videos, every time | An encoder or playback workflow | Configure the video source and holding scene/source to transition during each gap. The exact setup depends on the software; YouTube does not prescribe a universal playlist-transition procedure. |
| An occasional away screen while you step away | YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break | Choose a 1-, 3-, or 5-minute break. You must return to Live Control Room and end it manually; the timer reaching zero does not resume the stream. |
Set up a recurring holding screen between videos
- Prepare the holding screen. Create the still image or motion slate you want viewers to see. Decide whether the gap should have silence, music, or other audio.
- Set up the playback and holding sources in your encoder. Add the video playback source and a holding scene or source, then configure the transition at the gap between videos. Menu names and automation vary by encoder, so follow that software’s current instructions rather than assuming a particular button or setting.
- Check audio routing. Confirm what viewers will hear while the holding screen is shown. Mute a microphone if it should not be heard while you are away, and check whether any audio in the holding source should play.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Use the encoder’s YouTube destination option if available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private.
- Preview the whole transition before going live. Check that the holding screen appears for the intended gap, the next video starts correctly, and both video and audio behave as expected. Monitor the preview before starting the public stream.
The precise transition controls are encoder-specific. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers connecting an encoder and streaming, but does not define one universal way to automate a screen between playlist items.
Use YouTube’s Take a Break feature for an occasional pause
- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and configure the Take a Break overlay before the stream. Test it before relying on it during a live broadcast.
- When you need a pause, start Take a Break and choose the 1-, 3-, or 5-minute duration. You can use YouTube’s default away slate or select an eligible video from your channel library.
- When you are ready to resume, return to Live Control Room and end the break. Do not expect the countdown to resume the broadcast automatically.
The overlay does not change the stream’s audio sources. If you choose a video-library slate, its audio may play; check encoder audio settings and mute a live microphone if needed.
Preview, stream settings, and long-running archives
- Check the stream before launch. Preview the picture and listen to the audio, including the transition into and out of the holding screen. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preflight checks and monitoring.
- Review the stream key and settings. YouTube’s live stream settings include the stream key, latency, and DVR controls. Confirm the correct key is configured in the encoder before going live.
- Do not promise a complete 24-hour replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your videos and holding material are already arranged the way you want them played, StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service loops the uploaded material, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
