For slides, images, or a website, use your streaming studio’s share control and select the specific window or browser tab viewers need. In StreamYard, share a Chrome tab and check Share audio when viewers need to hear browser playback. For video, StreamYard recommends its video-sharing feature over screen sharing. Before going live, test what viewers can see and hear, and confirm you have the rights needed for the live stream and any archive.
Choose the right way to share
Most studio-based workflows let you share your entire screen, a single application window, or a browser tab. Choose the narrowest source that shows the material: a presentation window for slides, a browser tab for a web page or browser playback, and the whole screen only when the audience needs to see more than one application.
- Slides, images, or a website: Share the slide application window or the relevant browser tab.
- Browser media with sound: In StreamYard, share the Chrome tab containing the media and enable Share audio.
- A local video file: Use StreamYard’s video-sharing feature if available for your presentation. StreamYard says screen sharing is not optimized for video playback.
- A configurable desktop setup: OBS is a free, open-source alternative. Its capture and audio setup depends on your operating system and chosen sources, so use current OBS instructions for that specific setup.
Share slides, images, or a website
- Open the presentation, image, or web page before starting the share.
- In your streaming studio, open the present or share control. Select the application window for a slide deck, or the browser tab for a web page.
- Add the share to the live layout and check the studio preview. Make sure the content is legible and that unrelated windows or private information are not visible.
- Advance slides or navigate the page while watching the audience view, not just your own desktop.
A second monitor is optional, but it can make this easier by keeping the studio controls visible while you advance slides. StreamYard says screen sharing works best with two monitors; one display is not a requirement.
Share browser media with audio in StreamYard
- Open the media in a Chrome tab and make sure it is ready to play.
- In StreamYard, choose Present → Share screen → Chrome tab.
- Select the tab containing the media and check Share audio before you start sharing. StreamYard supports shared screen audio only when sharing Chrome tabs.
- Start playback and confirm in the studio that the share is visible and the sound is reaching the broadcast.
- If you will speak over the clip, adjust the shared-audio level in the studio so your voice and the media are both intelligible.
These controls are specific to StreamYard. Other studios and operating systems may offer different screen-audio or routing options. StreamYard says its screen-sharing feature is not supported on mobile devices.

Play a local video file
StreamYard recommends its video-sharing feature rather than screen sharing for video because screen sharing is not optimized for video playback. Follow the studio’s video-sharing controls for the best fit when that feature is available.
StreamYard also describes a Chrome-tab workaround: open a new Chrome tab, drag the video file into that tab, then share the tab with audio enabled. Treat this as a fallback, not the preferred video workflow, and test playback and sound before the live broadcast.

Check rights and destination rules before you go live
Use media you own, have permission to use, or have verified is licensed for the specific live and archived uses you intend. A video that is available to watch online is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast in your stream.
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A match may trigger a warning, a placeholder image, an interruption, or termination. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add the licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm this with the rights holder before relying on the license for a YouTube live stream.

- Check that the permission covers live streaming and, if you plan to keep the broadcast, the archived recording.
- Verify any requirements attached to music, clips, photographs, or other material you include.
- If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted for the live broadcast.
Test the share before the audience arrives
- Confirm the correct window or tab is being shared and that the material is readable in the live layout.
- Play a short section and check both the media level and your microphone level. In StreamYard, adjust shared audio in the studio if needed.
- Check that notifications, private messages, and unrelated browser tabs will not appear on the broadcast.
- Test slide advancing, video playback, and any transitions you expect to use.
- Confirm you have permission for the media and have addressed any destination-platform requirements.
Common problems and fixes
The audience can see the video but cannot hear it
In StreamYard, screen audio works only when you share a Chrome tab. Select the tab containing the media and check Share audio. If you are using another studio or operating system, check its current audio-sharing controls rather than assuming StreamYard’s steps apply.
The video looks choppy or poorly suited to the broadcast
Screen sharing is not optimized for video in StreamYard. Use its video-sharing feature where available; use the Chrome-tab file workaround only as a fallback and test it before going live.

The share shows the wrong window or exposes unrelated content
Stop the share and select the intended application window or browser tab instead of the entire screen. Check the audience preview before continuing.
Screen sharing is unavailable on a phone or tablet
StreamYard says screen sharing is not supported on mobile devices. Use a supported desktop workflow for this feature, or choose another presentation method available in your studio.

YouTube interrupts the stream over third-party content
A live-stream match can lead to a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination. Check the rights for the material and, where applicable, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; having a license may not be enough to prevent an interruption.
