How to Set Wirecast Bitrate and Resolution for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Wirecast, set YouTube Live’s output resolution, frame rate and bitrate through the encoder preset selected in Output > Output Settings. For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations are 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. Treat these as targets—not guarantees—and test the complete setup before broadcasting.

What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?

Choose a bitrate based on the codec, resolution and frame rate Wirecast will send to YouTube. The following are YouTube’s published recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not results from independent performance tests. YouTube’s guidance was accessed October 3, 2026.

Wirecast output target YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are recommendations rather than minimums. YouTube’s table also varies by codec and target format: for example, its H.264 recommendation is 50 Mbps for 2160p60 and 34 Mbps for 1440p60. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full current table and the codec you plan to use.

Your connection needs enough sustained upload capacity for the outgoing stream, with room for normal variation and other network use. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a quality that your connection can reliably maintain. A bitrate listed as recommended does not mean your connection or computer can sustain it.

What bitrate should I use for 1080p 60fps?

For H.264 at 1080p60, use YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps as the target. If the connection or encoder cannot hold a stable stream at that setting, test a lower output such as 1080p30 or 720p60 rather than assuming the recommended figure will work on every setup.

Should I use 720p or 1080p for a live stream?

Use 1080p when your production can encode it smoothly and your upload connection can sustain its recommended bitrate. Use 720p when reliability or computer load matters more than additional image detail. The frame rate matters too: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. For fast motion, 60 fps can look smoother, but it asks more of the encoder and connection than 30 fps at the same resolution.

How do I change resolution in Wirecast?

The dimensions and bitrate sent to YouTube come from the encoder preset selected for the output. The documented destination workflow below is from Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows guide; labels and controls may differ in other releases and on macOS.

  1. Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, set up the live event and have its stream destination and key available if your Wirecast workflow asks for them. Keep the stream key private.
  2. Open Wirecast’s output settings. Choose Output > Output Settings, select YouTube as the destination and choose an encoder.
  3. Choose or copy an encoder preset. Use a preset that matches the intended resolution, frame rate and codec. To customize one, copy it in the Encoder Presets controls, edit the available width, height, frame-rate and bitrate fields, then save it under a distinct name. The Wirecast 16 Windows guide describes copying and saving an edited preset. It also identifies Strict Constant Bitrate as an option that holds the configured average bitrate strictly.
  4. Set the output format. Choose a codec and format accepted by both the installed Wirecast encoder and YouTube. YouTube’s guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, CBR and frame rates up to 60 fps. Codec availability in Wirecast depends on the software version and system.
  5. Decide whether YouTube should detect the format. YouTube normally detects stream resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need manual control, create a custom stream key in YouTube Studio and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  6. Save and run a representative test. Use the same audio, movement and production load planned for the event. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages before the broadcast starts and while it is live.

For YouTube’s recommended encoder behavior, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not let the interval exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion. See the YouTube live encoder settings and Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Windows user guide. The exact preset controls available depend on your Wirecast build and encoder.

Which encoder settings matter most?

Resolution and frame rate

Higher resolution can preserve more detail, but generally requires more bitrate and encoding capacity. Sixty frames per second can improve the appearance of fast motion, but YouTube’s recommended bitrate is higher than for 30 fps at the same resolution. Choose a format that the Wirecast encoder, computer and connection can maintain together.

Codec and bitrate mode

YouTube publishes different bitrate guidance for H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. Pick a codec that is actually available in your Wirecast version and supported by your intended YouTube workflow; do not assume every Wirecast installation exposes every codec. Use CBR as YouTube recommends. In Wirecast, the documented Strict Constant Bitrate option holds the configured average bitrate strictly, if that control is available for the selected encoder.

Keyframes and transport

Use RTMPS where your Wirecast setup supports it, and configure a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations; confirm the selected encoder’s controls and units in your installed release.

SDR and HDR

For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709. Its cited guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance. Check YouTube’s current format guidance and the capabilities of your encoder before building an HDR workflow.

How do I test stream stability before going live?

A saved preset is not proof that the end-to-end stream is stable. Test with conditions resembling the actual event, including audio, movement and the production load. YouTube Help specifically advises testing before starting a live stream with similar audio and video movement, then checking stream health and messages.

  1. Run an upload-speed test on the connection Wirecast will use.
  2. Start a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast using the intended preset and production setup.
  3. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages while the test is running, and check for encoding or connection warnings.
  4. If you see instability or the computer is overloaded, reduce output resolution or frame rate, then repeat the test. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change helped.

YouTube’s testing advice is available in its live streaming help. Telestream’s support material also suggests trying a lower-resolution encoding preset, such as 1280×720, as a CPU troubleshooting step; that is general guidance, not evidence that resolution causes every dropped-frame problem.

How do I stop dropped frames on Wirecast?

First determine whether the problem is encoding load or the network: inspect Wirecast and YouTube’s stream-health messages during a representative test. Lower the resolution or frame rate and retest if the computer is overloaded; for example, Telestream’s general CPU guidance suggests trying a 1280×720 preset. If the upload connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, select a less demanding target and verify it again. Do not treat a bitrate reduction as a fix until a test confirms the stream is stable.

  • Computer or encoding load: Try a lower-resolution preset or frame rate, then repeat the same test and compare the result.
  • Insufficient or variable upload capacity: Recheck upload speed on the broadcast connection and test a target with a lower bitrate requirement.
  • Format or keyframe mismatch: Confirm the chosen codec is supported by the installed encoder, use CBR and check YouTube’s two-second recommended keyframe interval (maximum four seconds).
  • Manual resolution mismatch: If YouTube’s stream key has manual resolution settings enabled, make sure the configured format matches the Wirecast output. Otherwise, YouTube normally detects the resolution and frame rate automatically.
  • Unclear cause: Read the stream-health messages and change one variable per test; a dropped-frame symptom alone does not establish whether the cause is the encoder, connection or another part of the setup.
