Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safest practical setup is a short, repeatable audit: decide who can see each kind of content, limit who can message or add you, close unnecessary discovery and tagging routes, then keep mute, restrict, block, report, and filtering tools ready. Post visibility and message eligibility are separate controls, so a private feed does not automatically stop strangers from contacting you.
No platform setting makes copied screenshots, forwarded files, or every piece of profile information impossible. Use the steps below as a platform-by-platform review, and recheck them after app updates because labels, age defaults, account types, and regional features change.
Start with the privacy decisions that matter
Before opening settings, identify what you are protecting and which contacts you still need. A journalist, a parent managing a child’s account, and a creator who needs public reach will choose different boundaries. Write down the answers to these questions:
- Which posts, videos, stories, profile fields, and follower or following lists should be visible to everyone, followers, approved friends, or nobody?
- Should non-followers be able to send a direct message, add you to a group, or only submit a request?
- Can people find the account through a phone number, email address, uploaded contacts, search, or recommendations?
- Who may tag, mention, comment, download, duet, remix, or add the account to a group?
- Is location, online status, activity status, or read status exposed when you would rather keep it private?
- What is the least disruptive response to an unwanted contact: mute, restrict, remove, block, report, or a word filter?
Keep a distinction between visibility (who can see something you post) and eligibility (who may initiate a message or interaction). Changing one does not reliably change the other.

Set the audience for existing and future content
Review each content type separately
Most services have different audiences for ordinary posts, short-lived stories, videos, profile details, and live broadcasts. Check both the default for new content and the audience of older material. A newly private account may not rewrite the audience selected on an old post, and a story can have a different audience from the main feed.
Use the narrowest audience that still serves the purpose of the account. Public is appropriate when discoverability is part of the goal; followers or approved friends are better for personal updates. Hide sensitive profile fields even when posts are public. A profile can reveal an employer, school, town, or routine through its biography and photos without exposing a single new post.
What private or protected does not mean
TikTok states that public content may be visible and shareable on or off its service and may appear in search engines. A private TikTok account requires approval for followers and limits who can view videos and certain profile information, but the name, username, and profile photo can remain visible to anyone. Treat private or protected mode as an audience gate, not as anonymity.
Use an audience check before publishing
- Open the post, video, or story composer and read the audience label instead of assuming it inherited the previous choice.
- Ask whether every person in that audience needs the location, people, date, or background shown.
- After publishing, open the item from the account’s public or visitor view when the platform provides one.
- For older material, use the platform’s bulk audience or archive tools, then inspect a few representative items individually.
Control who can contact or add you
Direct messages are a separate gate
On X, enabling Receive Direct Messages from anyone allows anyone to message the account even when posts are protected. Protecting posts therefore does not close the inbox. Look for a dedicated message-privacy page and decide where messages from people you do not follow should go: the main inbox, a request folder, or nowhere.

Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp
Meta’s educational guidance describes separate controls for Instagram direct messages, group-chat additions, and messages from people you do not follow. Depending on the choice, those messages can appear in requests or not be delivered. Messenger similarly lets you decide who may send messages and whether they reach Chats, Message Requests, or are not delivered. Do not assume that an Instagram choice automatically applies to Messenger; open each service’s own privacy controls.

WhatsApp group privacy is presented as Everyone, My Contacts, or My Contacts Except. If an administrator cannot add you under the selected setting, WhatsApp provides a private invitation route instead. This preserves a way for legitimate invitations without allowing every group administrator to add you directly.
TikTok direct messages
TikTok’s Safety Center says direct messages can be set to Everyone, Friends (followers you follow back), or No one. Direct messages are available only to registered users aged 16 and older. A parent or caregiver can restrict or turn off the feature through Family Pairing. The labels and availability can vary by region and app version, so verify what your account actually shows.
Snapchat contact choices
On Snapchat, open Profile > Settings > App & Privacy > Contact Me. The listed choices are Friends and Friends and Contacts. The former Everyone option is not generally available; it is reserved for Creator and business accounts. Choosing Friends and Contacts still permits people in your phone contacts to reach you, so remove stale contacts from the address book or choose Friends if that route is unnecessary.
Platform-by-platform setup paths
Facebook: use Audience and visibility, then Privacy Checkup
- Open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility.
- Review profile details and hide fields that do not need to be public.
- Set audiences for future posts and review the audience on past posts; use the available bulk tools carefully because they can change many items at once.
- Open followers and public content settings, then decide whether non-friends can follow or comment.
- Open profile and tagging controls. Choose who can post on your profile, see posts you are tagged in, and review tags before they appear.
- Review how people find and contact you, including phone-number and email discovery routes.
- Use the blocking section for accounts that should not interact with you.
- Run Privacy Checkup to revisit sharing and contact choices in one guided flow.
Facebook notes that some options depend on profile type, and teen defaults can vary by region and age. Menu names may not be identical in every app version.
Instagram and Messenger: separate message, group, and comment controls
- Open Instagram’s privacy and message settings and specify who may send direct messages, who may add you to group chats, and whether non-follower messages become requests or are rejected.
- Turn on Restrict for an account that should be able to see less of your activity without receiving a conspicuous block signal. Restricted comments can have limited visibility, and the restricted person does not receive your online or read status.
- Open Hidden Words and add terms or phrases you do not want in comments or message requests. Abusive requests can be routed to Hidden Requests, and comments containing selected words can be hidden.
- Review sensitive-content controls and comment permissions, then check Messenger separately for delivery destinations: Chats, Message Requests, or not delivered.
Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp do not share identical controls even though they are Meta services. Treat each app as a separate account surface.

TikTok: account privacy plus per-video visibility
- Go to Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Private account and enable it if follower approval is appropriate.
- For each video, open its privacy or audience option and choose the permitted viewers. Account privacy does not replace the per-post choice.
- Open direct-message settings and select Everyone, Friends, or No one, subject to age and regional eligibility.
- Review comments, mentions, tags, downloads, duet, and stitch or remix permissions. Turn off features that let others reuse content when that reuse is not necessary.
- Check discoverability through contacts, search, and recommendations, and inspect location or activity settings if shown.
TikTok explicitly cautions that settings may vary depending on your region and version of the app. A private account still exposes the name, username, and profile photo.
X: protect posts and close the independent DM route
- Open privacy and safety settings and enable Protect your posts if only approved followers should see them.
- Review pending follow requests and accept only people you recognize. Existing followers remain unless you remove or block them.
- Open direct-message settings and turn off Receive Direct Messages from anyone if strangers should not be able to initiate contact.
- Review discoverability by email and phone number, and disable either route that you do not need.
- Set photo-tagging permissions, and add location only to individual posts when the benefit outweighs the exposure.
- Use mute, block, and report controls from a post, profile, or conversation when an interaction becomes unwanted or unsafe.
Snapchat: contact, location, story, and activity surfaces
- Open Profile > Settings > App & Privacy.
- Under Contact Me, choose Friends or Friends and Contacts.
- Review who can see your location, view your Story, find you, use your Bitmoji, and see your Activity Indicator.
- Disable location sharing when it is not needed, and use a limited Story audience rather than assuming all snaps have the same visibility.
- Recheck these settings after account-type changes because Creator and business accounts can have contact options unavailable to ordinary accounts.
Close discovery and interaction routes
Discoverability by phone, email, and contacts
Finding an account is often easier through a phone number, email address, uploaded contacts, or recommendation systems than through a username search. Disable those routes when you do not need them. If you keep contact discovery for family or clients, remember that anyone who already has the number or email may be able to connect the account to your identity.
Tags, mentions, comments, and group additions
Set who may tag or mention you and, where available, require approval before a tagged item appears on your profile. Limit comments on public posts if replies attract harassment. Restrict who may add you to group chats; a request or invitation is safer than automatic addition. Review download, duet, remix, and similar reuse settings on video services because audience control does not necessarily disable copying or transformation.
Location and activity signals
Location can be attached to a single post, a story, a map feature, or the device metadata used by an app. Turn off precise sharing unless a specific feature requires it. Also review online indicators, last active time, typing indicators, and read receipts. Hiding these signals can make conversations less convenient, but it prevents strangers from learning when you are present or whether you have opened a message.
Use graduated tools for unwanted interactions
| Tool | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mute | Stop seeing someone’s posts, stories, or messages without changing the relationship. | The other person may still contact or mention you, depending on the platform. |
| Restrict | Reduce a person’s comment visibility and hide your online or read status from them where supported. | Available behavior differs by service and may not stop direct messages completely. |
| Remove follower or friend | End an existing connection without the stronger signal of a block. | Public content may remain visible, and the person can request or follow again. |
| Block | Stop an account from viewing, messaging, following, or interacting through the blocked identity. | It can affect legitimate contact and may be bypassed by another account. |
| Report | Escalate spam, threats, harassment, or rule-breaking content to the platform. | Review outcomes and timing vary; save evidence before removing it when safety or law enforcement may matter. |
| Word filters | Hide comments or message requests containing selected insults, slurs, or recurring spam terms. | Filters can catch benign uses or miss creative spellings, so inspect hidden folders periodically. |
Start with the least disruptive tool that solves the problem, then escalate when contact persists, becomes threatening, or violates platform rules. For credible threats, preserve dates, usernames, URLs shown by the app, and screenshots before blocking or deleting.

Run a 15-minute privacy audit
- Audience: Check existing and future posts, stories, videos, profile fields, and follower or following lists.
- Contact: Check who can send a direct message, add you to a group, or move a message into the main inbox.
- Discovery: Test phone, email, contact-upload, search, and recommendation settings.
- Interactions: Review tags, mentions, comments, group additions, downloads, duet, remix, and similar reuse permissions.
- Location and status: Check location sharing, activity indicators, online presence, and read receipts.
- Response tools: Confirm where mute, restrict, remove, block, report, and word-filter controls are located before you need them.
- Verification: View the profile from a logged-out browser or a trusted alternate account, where permitted, to see what a visitor can actually see.
Repeat the audit after a major app update, a change from personal to creator or business status, a move to another country, or a birthday that changes age-based eligibility.
Common problems and fixes
“My account is private, but someone can still see information.”
Private modes often leave a name, username, profile photo, or other basic profile fields visible. Remove identifying details from those fields and check whether a public story, video, comment, or tagged post is exposing more than intended.
“I protected my posts, but strangers still message me.”
Post protection and direct-message eligibility are separate. Open the message settings directly; on X, specifically disable Receive Direct Messages from anyone. On other services, choose Friends, approved contacts, requests, or no delivery according to the available labels.
“A legitimate person cannot add me to a group.”
A narrow group setting may intentionally block direct additions. Use the platform’s private invitation route, or temporarily allow the person through an approved contact path, then restore the narrower setting.
“The menu or option described online is missing.”
Check the app version, region, age, and account type. TikTok states that settings vary by region and app version; Snapchat’s Everyone contact option is generally limited to Creator and business accounts; Facebook also notes profile- and age-dependent differences. Update the app and search its current in-app help page rather than relying on an old screenshot.

“Filtering did not stop the harassment.”
Save evidence, use Restrict or Mute to reduce exposure while you document it, then Block and Report when the behavior continues or violates rules. Word filters are a supplement, not a substitute for account-level action.
Choose settings by trade-off, not by a single “maximum privacy” switch
Narrower audiences and contact rules reduce unsolicited interaction but can also prevent new clients, relatives, classmates, or collaborators from reaching you. Compare any two options on five questions:
- Reach and discovery: Does the setting expose posts or make the account easier to find?
- Legitimate-contact friction: Must a trusted person request, invite, or wait for approval?
- Unwanted-message filtering: Are strangers blocked, routed to requests, or merely hidden?
- Scope: Does the change affect older content, future content, or only one feature?
- Eligibility: Is the option available for your age, region, app version, and account type?
A practical compromise is often a private personal account with a separate public-facing account, strict message requests, approval for tags, limited location sharing, and a clear escalation routine. Whatever combination you choose, inspect the result from a visitor’s perspective and remember that recipients can still copy or redistribute content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to make every social account private?
No. Set each account according to its purpose. A public account can work when reach is essential, provided you limit profile details, contact routes, tags, location, and reuse permissions.

It can hide the platform’s built-in status indicator where supported, but it cannot prevent a person from inferring activity from a reply, a public post, or another account.
Can a blocked person contact me again?
Blocking applies to the blocked identity and platform features covered by that service. Another account, a shared group, or an external channel may still be used, so report persistent harassment and preserve evidence.
Why are TikTok direct messages unavailable on an otherwise active account?
TikTok direct messages require a registered account holder aged 16 or older. Family Pairing, regional rules, and app-version differences can also restrict the feature.
Does a private or protected account prevent screenshots and forwarding?
No. The controls limit who can access content through the service; they do not guarantee that an approved viewer cannot copy, record, download, or redistribute it.
