Set up a separate child profile, choose the lowest content or maturity rating that fits your child, block individual titles where the service allows it, and lock adult profiles with a PIN or exit code. If viewing happens on a streaming device such as Fire TV, configure that device separately from the streaming account. Menus, rating labels and available controls vary by service, device and country, so verify the settings on the profile your child actually uses.
What parental controls can and cannot do
Streaming controls work in layers. A profile rating sets a ceiling for the content that profile can discover or play. A title block adds a specific exception for a movie or documentary that you do not want on that profile. A profile PIN, Parent Code or exit challenge addresses a different problem: stopping a child from switching to an unrestricted adult profile. Account settings and device settings may also be separate.
These controls do not replace checking a documentary yourself. Nonfiction can include violence, disturbing images, strong language, sexual material, substance use or frightening real-world events. Ratings and labels are assigned differently by service and country. Inspect the local rating, synopsis and content advisories before allowing a title.
Use this order for any service:
- Create or select a child profile rather than sharing an adult profile.
- Set the profile’s maturity or content-rating ceiling.
- Block particular titles if the service supports title blocking.
- Protect adult profiles and profile creation with a PIN, password or exit control.
- Configure separate controls on the streaming device when required.
- Test browsing, search, playback and profile switching while signed in as the child.
A rating ceiling is not the same as a complete lockout. Some services describe the filter as removing higher-rated titles from browsing and search, while others describe restrictions on viewing or purchasing. That difference matters: a title may be hidden, unavailable to play, or still visible but protected by a prompt. Test the actual behavior on your account rather than assuming every service uses the same model.

Prepare before changing settings
- Have the account password or identity-verification method available; several services require it before changing restrictions.
- Know which profile and device your child uses. A restriction on one profile does not automatically apply to another.
- Decide the highest rating you are comfortable with, then check how that service groups ages or ratings in your country.
- Make a short list of specific movies or documentaries to block. Rating ceilings are broad filters; they cannot capture every topic your family considers unsuitable.
- Record the PIN somewhere secure that your child cannot access. Do not use an easily guessed birthday or the same code used to unlock the device.
- List every way the child can reach the service: television app, tablet, phone, browser, game console and streaming stick. Controls may be account-level, profile-level or device-level.
- Check whether another adult profile is already unlocked. A correctly configured child profile offers little protection if the profile chooser opens an unrestricted profile without a challenge.
How the major services differ
| Service | Profile rating filter | Individual title blocking | Protection against profile switching or new profiles | Separate device layer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Yes; titles at or below the selected maturity level are shown. | Yes, for an individual profile. | Profile locks and a PIN requirement for adding profiles. | Not specified in the cited help pages; check the device separately. |
| Disney+ | Yes; content above the selected rating does not appear while browsing or searching. | Not stated in the cited help page. | Four-digit Profile PIN and a password requirement for creating profiles. | Not stated; review the device’s own controls. |
| Prime Video | Account parental controls can restrict video content. | Not stated in the cited help page. | Account PIN bypasses restrictions and protects purchases or subscriptions. | Yes. Fire TV parental controls are managed directly on the Fire TV device. |
| HBO Max | Kids profiles use selected ratings; the cited regional page describes a PG (Ages 10+) default for a new Kids profile. | Not stated in the cited help page. | Kid-Proof Exit uses a four-digit Parent Code; Adult profiles can have a PIN. | Not stated; check the device separately. |
“Not stated” means the linked help page does not document that capability; it is not evidence that the service can never offer it. Availability and labels can change with region, app version and account type.
Compare services on five practical questions: What is the highest rating the child profile can reach? Can you block one title without lowering the whole profile? Does the filter hide a title from discovery, or only stop playback? What prevents switching to an adult profile or creating a new one? Is a separate television or streaming-device setting required? The answers are different for Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and HBO Max, so transferring instructions from one service to another can leave a gap.
Set up Netflix controls
Netflix documents child profiles, profile maturity ratings, title blocking, profile locks and a PIN requirement for adding profiles. A profile set to a maturity level displays titles rated at or below that level, and you can block a particular show or movie for that profile. See Netflix’s parental-controls overview and its detailed maturity-rating and title-blocking instructions.
Change a profile’s maturity rating in the app
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles and select the child profile.
- Open Viewing Restrictions, then Maturity Rating.
- Verify your account identity, select the desired level and save.
Change the rating in a browser
- Open the Netflix account page.
- Select Profiles, then Adjust parental controls.
- Choose the child profile and verify your identity.
- Set the maturity level and save.
Block a specific movie or documentary
In the app, open the profile’s Viewing Restrictions and choose Block Titles. In a browser, use Title Restrictions. Netflix notes that editing maturity ratings or blocking titles on a Kids profile must be done in a browser. A device refresh may be needed before the change appears, so close and reopen the app or sign out and back in if the title remains visible.
Blocking is profile-specific. If the same account has several child profiles, repeat the restriction where necessary and confirm that the title is blocked on the profile your child actually opens. A title block is useful when one film raises a concern but the rest of the profile’s rating range is acceptable.
Stop a child using an adult profile
Apply a profile lock to each adult profile and require a PIN when adding profiles. Then test the profile chooser: the child should be able to enter the child profile but should be challenged before opening an adult profile or creating another profile.
Set up Disney+ controls
Disney+ provides profile-level content ratings, Junior Mode, a four-digit Profile PIN, a profile-creation restriction and a separate option for unrated titles. Its help page, Parental controls on Disney+, is dated June 24, 2026.

Set the content rating
- In a supported browser or the mobile app, open Edit Profiles.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Under Parental Controls, open Content rating.
- Verify the account password, choose the rating and save.
Disney+ says content rated above the selected level will not appear while browsing or searching. Junior Mode provides a child-oriented profile experience; select it only when its narrower interface suits the child.
Recommended Free Tools
Protect the profile and profile creation
- Open the profile’s Profile PIN setting.
- Verify the account and create a four-digit PIN.
- Enable the profile-creation restriction so a password is required to create new profiles.
Use the Profile PIN on profiles that contain unrestricted or older-audience material, not only on the child profile. Otherwise, the child may be able to leave the child profile and select an adult profile that has no additional challenge.
Review unrated content
Disney+ says the unrated-content option is on by default except for Junior Mode. Turn it off if you do not want that profile to view unrated content while streaming. Rated programs, and some other unrated programs, continue to follow the profile’s content-rating settings. The service warns that live content and live ads may include adult themes, so a rating ceiling is not a guarantee that every live interruption is suitable.
Set up Prime Video and Fire TV controls
Prime Video’s account parental controls can restrict video content that may be viewed or purchased. The Account PIN is used to bypass account restrictions and to protect purchase or subscription actions. Follow the current Prime Video parental-controls help page for the labels shown on your account.
Configure the Prime Video account
- Open the Prime Video account’s parental-control settings.
- Set the viewing restriction appropriate for the child.
- Create an Account PIN that the child does not know.
- Check both viewing and purchasing protections; a purchase PIN alone does not establish a viewing limit.
Prime Video’s help information describes account controls broadly rather than documenting an individual title-block workflow in the cited page. If a particular title is the concern, verify what your account offers instead of assuming that a rating restriction and a title block are interchangeable.

Configure Fire TV separately
Amazon explicitly distinguishes Fire TV device controls from Prime Video account controls. If the child watches through Fire TV, open the device’s own settings and configure its parental controls there as well. Test the television’s app launcher and profile or app switching, not only playback inside Prime Video. A restriction changed in the account will not substitute for a device setting that remains unrestricted.
Set up HBO Max Kids controls
The regional HBO Max Kids profiles help page describes Kids profiles with selected content ratings, a child-oriented home and search experience, Kid-Proof Exit and PINs on Adult profiles. The page currently uses HBO Max branding and describes a regional interface; confirm the service name, rating groups and menu path for your location.

Create and rate a Kids profile
- Choose New Profile.
- Enable Kids Mode.
- Choose a ratings group and save.
- Review the profile’s rating after creation and change it if necessary.
The cited page says a new Kids profile defaults to PG (Ages 10+) in the described region. Do not assume that default applies worldwide. A default is only a starting point; select the rating that matches your child and your family’s standards.
Enable Kid-Proof Exit and adult-profile PINs
Enable Kid-Proof Exit when you want a four-digit Parent Code required to leave the Kids profile. Add a PIN to every Adult profile that the child could otherwise open. Test both directions: entering the Kids profile should be easy, while leaving it or opening an Adult profile should require the code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDocumentary-specific checks
A documentary label describes format, not suitability. Before approving a title, check the service’s local rating and advisory information for violence, distressing events, language, sexual content, substance use and frightening imagery. Consider the subject matter as well: war, crime, disasters, medical procedures and exploitation can be intense even when a title is educational.
- Watch the opening minutes yourself when the topic is unfamiliar or potentially disturbing.
- Use a title block for a known problem title instead of lowering the entire profile’s rating.
- Explain why a title is restricted and offer an alternative appropriate to the child’s age and interests.
- Recheck documentaries that move between services; the same film can carry different local ratings or advisories.
- Pay attention to live documentaries, news-related programming and advertising interruptions. Unrated or live material may not behave like an ordinary on-demand film.
For an older child, discuss the difference between a factual subject and a suitable presentation. Graphic footage, real accounts of crime or disaster, and medical imagery can be more upsetting than fictional scenes with the same rating. The controls reduce accidental discovery; your judgment remains the final check.
Verify that controls actually work
- Enter the child profile and search for a title above its rating. It should be hidden or unavailable according to that service’s documented behavior.
- Search for a title you specifically blocked. On Netflix, confirm the block was made for the correct profile.
- Sign out to the profile chooser and try to open an adult profile. The service should request the profile PIN, Parent Code or equivalent.
- Try to create a new profile. Where enabled, Disney+ and Netflix should require account verification or a password/PIN.
- On Fire TV, test the device controls independently of Prime Video.
- Try both search and direct playback. A filter that hides a title in search may still need a playback test.
- Repeat the test after an app update, password change, household-device change or service-interface redesign.
Perform the test on every screen the child uses. A television, phone and browser can present different menus, and a setting saved in one account may not affect a separate device-level control. Keep the child signed in only to the intended profile where practical.
Troubleshooting common failures
A restricted title still appears
Confirm that you edited the child’s profile rather than the account generally. On Netflix, refresh the device after saving; Kids-profile rating and title-block changes must be made in a browser. On Disney+, remember that the rating filter is described as hiding content during browsing and search, while live content and ads may have separate risks.

Menu names do not match
Services change labels by country, platform and app version. Use the linked official help page for the account’s region, update the app, and look for the equivalent concepts: profile editing, viewing restrictions, maturity or content rating, title restrictions, profile PIN and exit protection.
A documentary has no obvious age rating
Check whether it is treated as unrated, live or regionally classified. Disney+ provides a separate unrated-content setting, and its help page warns about adult themes in live content and live ads. If the service provides insufficient detail, do not infer suitability from the word “documentary”; review the title yourself or leave it blocked.
The child knows the PIN
Change the code immediately and review where it was stored. Update every adult profile or device that used the exposed code, then repeat the profile-switching test. Do not reuse a code that also unlocks the child’s device.
Maintenance checklist for families
- Review the child profile’s rating after moving to a new country or changing the account region.
- Remove profiles that are no longer used and keep profile creation protected.
- Change PINs if a child learns one or if the code is shared outside the household.
- Re-test after major app, television or streaming-device updates.
- Check new live channels, live sports, news and advertising options separately from on-demand movies.
- Keep a current list of titles that are blocked for your family and revisit it as children mature.
- Recheck settings whenever a child begins using a new service or device; controls do not automatically transfer between services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both a profile rating and a PIN?
Yes. The rating limits what the child profile can discover or play; the PIN or exit code prevents switching to an unrestricted adult profile. They address different paths to unsuitable content.
Can I block one movie without lowering the whole profile’s rating?
Netflix documents individual title blocking for a profile. Other services in the comparison do not state that feature in the cited help pages, so check the controls available in your account.
Are Fire TV controls included in Prime Video’s parental controls?
No. Amazon identifies Fire TV device parental controls as a separate settings layer that must be managed on the Fire TV device itself.
Why should I check a documentary’s rating if it is educational?
Documentaries can contain intense real-world violence, disturbing images, strong language or other adult themes. Format does not determine age suitability, and ratings vary by service and country.

What should I do if my service’s instructions look different?
Use the official help page for your country and current app, then look for equivalent profile-rating, title-blocking, PIN and exit-control settings. Interface labels are not universal.
Will a child profile protect every device automatically?
Not necessarily. Profile controls apply within the service, while devices such as Fire TV can have a separate parental-control layer. Configure and test both wherever the child watches.
Does a rating filter always block a title from search?
No universal behavior is documented. Disney+ says content above the selected rating does not appear while browsing or searching, while other services describe restrictions differently. Test search and playback on the actual account.
What is the difference between a profile PIN and an account PIN?
A profile PIN or Parent Code protects access to a particular profile or exit from Kids Mode. Prime Video’s Account PIN is used to bypass account restrictions and protect purchase or subscription actions. Use the control the service documents for each risk.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I rely on a new HBO Max Kids profile’s default rating?
No. The cited regional page describes a PG (Ages 10+) default, but rating groups and defaults can vary by location. Review and set the rating yourself.
What if a documentary is unrated?
Check the service’s unrated-content setting, any live-content rules and the title information. If details remain insufficient, review the program yourself or leave it blocked rather than treating “unrated” as automatically suitable.
The Bottom Line
Create a child profile, set its rating ceiling, block specific titles when available, and lock every adult profile or exit path with a PIN. Then configure any separate device controls—especially Fire TV—and test search, playback, profile switching and profile creation from the child’s point of view. Treat documentary status as a format label, not a safety guarantee, and recheck settings when services, regions or devices change.
