To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from India, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 and -re. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and start the scheduled broadcast there when it is ready. The steps use YouTube’s standard encoder workflow; the cited guidance does not specify different FFmpeg ingest settings for India.
Before you begin
- Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Prepare a local video file. Know its path and ensure its audio and video are suitable for the stream you intend to send.
- Check FFmpeg capabilities. The command below uses the
libx264encoder. Whether that encoder is available depends on your FFmpeg build. - Check the actual upload connection. Available outbound bandwidth should exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; conditions vary by location, time, and network, so test the connection you will use.
YouTube recommends preparing in advance: its streaming tips advise setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are operational recommendations, not FFmpeg requirements. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you plan to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact ingest URL YouTube provides; do not assume a fixed server address.
YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s credential for sending a feed. Treat it as secret: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared command, or other public place. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
Run FFmpeg in a loop
Replace both placeholders in this template. The ingest URL and key must come from the active YouTube stream in Live Control Room. The sample encodes H.264 video and AAC audio and sends them in an FLV container over RTMP or RTMPS, depending on the URL YouTube supplies.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YOUTUBE_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads a file at its native frame rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. FFmpeg documents both options in its command-line documentation. Its formats documentation includes an RTMP streaming example using H.264, AAC, FLV, and explicit audio/video mapping.
Adjust the example to the video
- Bitrate: The shown video bitrate is an example starting point, not a universal recommendation. Choose a YouTube encoder-settings range appropriate to your output resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure the connection has enough capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings for its bitrate guidance.
- Keyframes: The sample’s
-g 60and-keyint_min 60correspond to a two-second interval for a 30 fps output. Adjust them if the output frame rate changes. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. - Frame rate and dimensions: Match output to the source and your available upload capacity. The sample does not explicitly set output dimensions or frame rate; determine those for your file and intended stream rather than assuming this example fits every source.
- Audio: The example encodes AAC at 128 kb/s and 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s guidance accepts AAC or MP3 audio.
- Transport and video codec: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery where supported. This sample uses H.264. Use the exact URL provided in Live Control Room.
- Stream copy: This example re-encodes. Copying the source streams unchanged is appropriate only if they are already compatible with YouTube ingest; an arbitrary file cannot be assumed to work that way.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The example’s bitrate-related options set a target and rate constraints, but do not treat it as a verified configuration for every FFmpeg build, source, or connection. Confirm the resulting feed in Live Control Room.

Start the broadcast and verify playback
- Run the command in a terminal where FFmpeg can read the video file. Keep the terminal open while the encoder is sending the stream.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that video and audio are present and that the preview is stable.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview. Starting FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not by itself complete YouTube’s separate publishing step for a scheduled stream.
- Open the watch page and verify playback. During the stream, monitor both the encoder output and YouTube’s preview for interruptions or quality problems.
When finished, stop the broadcast through YouTube and stop FFmpeg. YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. An infinite input loop does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream forever: plan for network, computer, and platform interruptions.
Network and key safety in India
YouTube recommends that available outbound upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate and advises leaving 20% headroom. A shared connection can reduce the capacity available to your stream, so test from the actual location and network at the time you expect to broadcast. The cited guidance provides no India-wide upload-speed guarantee. A wired Ethernet connection can be an option if available, but it is neither mandatory nor a substitute for sufficient bandwidth.

Keep the stream key private. Avoid putting it in a command that will be shared, saved in a public script, shown in a screenshot, or exposed through shell history. If someone else obtains it, reset it from the stream settings in Live Control Room.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg reports that
libx264is unavailable: Your FFmpeg build may not include that encoder. Use a build with the required encoder or select an encoder available in your installation, then confirm its output is compatible with YouTube. - YouTube receives no feed: Check that the stream URL and key were copied from the same active stream, that the placeholders were replaced correctly, and that the computer can reach the ingest service. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The preview is unstable or drops frames: Check actual outbound capacity and reduce the selected bitrate or output resolution/frame rate if needed. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, and account for other devices using the connection.
- Video arrives but audio is missing: Confirm the source contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg is encoding it. The sample command specifies AAC audio, but it cannot create sound if the input has no audio.
- The stream starts but is not public: Starting FFmpeg sends the encoder feed; for a scheduled stream, use the Live Control Room preview and select Go live when ready.
Copyright and YouTube policy
A looped file still has to comply with YouTube’s rules and rights requirements. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current requirements before broadcasting. Repeating a file with FFmpeg does not grant rights to its contents or guarantee that YouTube will accept the stream or its later monetization.
