For a local meditation video sent to YouTube Live, configure recovery on FFmpeg’s output: wrap the FLV output in the FIFO muxer and enable -attempt_recovery 1. The template below also loops the file indefinitely. Replace the RTMPS destination with the one shown in your YouTube Live Control Room, and keep your stream key private.
Use FIFO recovery for the outgoing YouTube connection
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a network output after a recoverable failure. In this setup, FIFO wraps the underlying FLV output; -attempt_recovery 1 enables retries, and -recovery_wait_time 1 sets a one-second wait between recovery attempts. This is a retry interval, not a guarantee that the broadcast will have no interruption. Recovery depends on the failure being recoverable and YouTube accepting a new connection. Replace meditation.mp4 with the input path and use the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room; do not publish or share the key. Do not assume a particular ingestion host.
Check the input and stream mapping
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at real-time speed. Without looping, a finite file ends when playback reaches its duration. The template maps the first video and first audio stream. If your file lacks either stream, adjust the -map options and remove or change the corresponding encoder settings; the example is not suitable unchanged for every media file.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for your stream
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The figures below are YouTube’s current published guidance, accessed in 2026, not results from a test of this command. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your intended picture quality and the stable upload capacity available at the streaming computer. The table values do not establish that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts delivery to Google’s servers.

Understand FIFO queue behavior during an outage
The template sets -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. If the FIFO queue fills, this prioritizes letting encoding continue by dropping packets; the cost can be gaps in the output. If preserving queued packets matters more, remove that option. FFmpeg documents that the default behavior can block encoding while the queue drains.
FFmpeg’s documented default FIFO queue_size is 60 packets. That is a packet count, not a fixed duration in seconds, so it should not be interpreted as a guaranteed outage buffer. Queue policy and retry timing involve a trade-off: dropping can allow encoding to proceed, while blocking avoids that deliberate packet dropping but can stall encoding. Neither choice makes a network outage invisible to viewers.

Why HTTP reconnect flags do not fix RTMP output failures
Options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, and -reconnect_at_eof are documented for HTTP protocol operations. They are useful when FFmpeg reads a reconnectable HTTP stream; they do not configure recovery for an outgoing RTMP or RTMPS URL. For a local file being sent to YouTube, use FIFO output recovery instead. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for HTTP option scope and the FIFO muxer documentation for output recovery.
Test before the meditation stream starts
- Confirm the source. Make sure the file path is correct and that the file contains the audio and video streams mapped by the command.
- Use the account’s destination. Copy the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key secret.
- Check upload capacity. Test the connection’s stable upload capacity and choose a resolution and bitrate that it can sustain; do not treat the template’s 3 Mbps video setting as a recommended 720p30 target.
- Test representative content. Check a sample with the kind of audio and visual motion expected in the meditation stream, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and warnings.
- Verify looping and recovery separately. Confirm the video repeats beyond its original duration. If testing a connection interruption, watch the FFmpeg output and YouTube stream status; the FIFO retry mechanism is conditional recovery, not a promise of uninterrupted playback.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The input will not open: Check the filename, path, file access, and container/codec compatibility. Ensure the media actually contains the streams referenced by
-map 0:v:0and-map 0:a:0. - FFmpeg reports a mapping or encoder error: The template assumes both audio and video. Change the maps and remove the settings for any absent stream.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the RTMPS destination and stream key against Live Control Room. Do not substitute a guessed host or expose the key.
- The image stutters or stream health warns: Compare the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with stable upload capacity and YouTube’s guidance. A bitrate value in a command cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
- The output does not recover after a disconnect: FIFO recovery applies to recoverable output failures and depends on the ingest accepting reconnection. Check FFmpeg’s error output, the destination and key, and YouTube’s stream status.
- Encoding appears to stall during an outage: FIFO’s overflow behavior matters. The template drops packets on overflow to let encoding continue; removing that option avoids that configured dropping but may allow encoding to block while the queue drains.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Technical reconnection does not grant permission to broadcast the recording. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, recordings, and other material in the file, and review YouTube’s live-stream rules and channel requirements. Repeating a file also does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; review the policies that apply to your channel and content.
