To play local videos in shuffled order on a YouTube live stream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: add your media files to its playlist, enable Shuffle Playlist, and optionally enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, check the preview, and start the stream. OBS describes shuffle as randomizing playlist order; it does not specify when that order is reshuffled or promise a new random choice after each video.
Before you start: check YouTube access and video rights
- Confirm live-stream eligibility early. Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until broadcast time to turn it on. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Prepare local video files. The workflow below uses media files on the computer running OBS. Make sure you have permission to broadcast every video, including music and other material within it. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not itself grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube says a live stream may be terminated after a copyright strike, and Content ID claims may be made against an archived stream. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
- Plan the computer and connection. OBS must remain running and send the stream for the duration of the broadcast. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and use a reliable upload connection. Actual stream quality depends on your output settings and available upload capacity.
Install OBS and VLC, then make a shuffled playlist
OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. OBS documents the source and its playlist settings in its Media Sources guide.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC for your operating system. Open OBS and select the scene that should contain the video playback.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video Source. If that source is missing, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Open the source properties and add the video files you have permission to broadcast to its playlist. Use local files that the computer can access throughout the stream; moving or renaming a file can break its playlist entry.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the playlist files’ playback order.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should start again after the source reaches the end of the list. Without looping, the source runs out of media when the playlist finishes.
- Confirm the source appears correctly in the OBS preview. Check framing and audio before connecting the encoder to YouTube.
What “random order” means in OBS
OBS’s documentation says Shuffle Playlist randomizes the files’ order. It does not promise that OBS makes a fresh independent random selection after every clip, nor does it specify exactly when the order is reshuffled. Treat this as shuffled playlist playback, not as a guarantee that every video will be selected once before any repeat or that each loop will produce a newly randomized sequence.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream in Live Control Room or open a scheduled stream. The available labels and controls can change; follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings as the server and key. The key allows an encoder to send video to your channel, so keep it private; do not share it or include it in screenshots.
- Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check that the shuffled video and audio are present and correct.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready. Starting the encoder sends the feed to YouTube, but the scheduled event may still require this separate action.
- When finished, end the stream in YouTube Studio and stop sending from OBS according to the controls shown in the current interface. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours; longer streams are not covered by that automatic-archive statement.
Choose encoder settings and test stream health
YouTube recommends testing before the broadcast, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings table for your chosen output rather than copying a bitrate from a different format.

| H.264 output example | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the stream. Ensure your upload capacity is sufficient, then use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators to catch problems before viewers do.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- VLC Video Source is not available: Install VLC and restart OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC; OBS lists VLC as a requirement for this source.
- The preview is blank or a playlist item will not play: Check that the file path still exists, the file is accessible to the computer, and the media was added to the VLC source playlist. Test playback in OBS before starting the YouTube event.
- The video stops at the end of the list: Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart when the playlist runs out.
- The order does not behave as expected: Confirm Shuffle Playlist is enabled. OBS documents randomized playlist order but does not specify a reshuffle schedule or guarantee a fresh random pick for every clip.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS is streaming, and that its server URL and stream key match the values in the correct YouTube Live Control Room event. Treat the key as a credential and replace it if it has been exposed.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Check upload capacity and compare the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Lowering output demands may help if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, age eligibility, any live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and whether first-time enablement is still pending. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A stream is interrupted over rights concerns: Review the permissions for all video and audio in the playlist. YouTube can terminate streams after copyright strikes, and Content ID claims can affect an archived stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
