Savannah Guthrie had said her family would pay; that expressed willingness, not confirmation of a transfer. The latest update in the available reporting, from September 29, said authorities considered a newer possible note not credible.
What happened when the reported deadline passed?
On February 9, ABC News reported that two unverified notes sent to media included a 5 p.m. Pacific deadline for a bitcoin ransom payment. The deadline was a claim in purported notes—not an independently verified demand from Nancy Guthrie’s abductor. ABC said investigators were taking the notes seriously but had not confirmed their authenticity. ABC News reported the deadline and the uncertainty about the notes.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings released a video appealing to the possible abductor. She said, “We received your message and we understand,” and, “This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.” Those words show the family’s publicly stated willingness to pay. They do not establish whether money was transferred.
Did the Guthrie family pay the ransom?
The public reporting cited here does not confirm whether the family paid, and it does not prove that they did not. The February 9 deadline passing cannot answer that question: a reported deadline is not evidence of what happened afterward. Treat payment as unconfirmed unless an authoritative, newer report establishes it.

Were the ransom notes authentic?
Not all communications in the case had the same status. AP reported in July that authorities released two earlier notes: one, sent February 2, said Nancy was safe but scared and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency for her release; another, sent February 6, said she had died shortly after being kidnapped. Those are claims made in messages attributed to a kidnapper, not verified facts about Nancy’s condition.
On July 1, Reuters reported that the FBI was still investigating the disappearance as a kidnapping-for-ransom case. The bureau distinguished illegitimate extortion attempts from demands that might potentially be legitimate and were still under investigation. That distinction means the existence of a demand alone did not authenticate its sender.

In its September 29 report, AP said the Pima County Sheriff’s Department considered a possible ransom note that had surfaced over the preceding weekend not credible. Authorities urged people to report messages and watch for scammers. This finding applied to that newer possible note; it should not be treated as a blanket authentication or rejection of every earlier communication.
What is known about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance?
Authorities said Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her home outside Tucson on January 31, 2026, and was reported missing the next day. They believe she was kidnapped, abducted, or otherwise taken against her will. Reuters reported that the FBI continued to investigate the disappearance as a kidnapping for ransom case in July.

AP’s September 29 update said authorities had not stated whether Nancy was alive and that no suspect had been arrested. AP also reported that the FBI released surveillance footage of a masked person whom authorities said appeared to tamper with the porch camera and block it with a plant. These details describe the investigation; they do not establish who took Nancy or what happened to her.

- Payment: Public reporting cited here does not establish whether the family transferred money.
- Proof of life: Retired FBI special agent and former bureau hostage negotiator Rich Frankel told ABC News, “You may have an abductor communicating, but we’re not even sure of that yet because there was no proof of life on either emails or text, whatever they got.” That was Frankel’s assessment, not an official finding.
- Nancy’s current status: AP reported on September 29 that authorities had not said whether she was alive.
- The sender of each message: Authorities’ skepticism about a newer possible note does not, by itself, identify who sent any earlier notes.
The latest update covered here is dated September 29, 2026. Case information may change; claims about payment, Nancy’s status, or a note’s sender require confirmation from a newer authoritative source.
