Verify each run against its current game and category leaderboard, label the program clearly as a rerun, and test privately or unlisted before going public. A “rerun” is a live encoder transmission of prerecorded footage—not a claim that the runner is playing live.
Choose the source and broadcast format
Decide whether you are running a one-time scheduled show or a recurring program, then choose how the video will reach YouTube:
- Authorized prerecorded runs: Assemble recordings you have permission to use into a playlist or other playback sequence, then send that output through an encoder.
- PC gameplay: You can capture and encode gameplay on the computer. YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays and use production hardware such as microphones and cameras (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).
- Console gameplay: Modern consoles can stream directly to YouTube. If you want a computer-based encoder workflow instead, a capture card may feed console video into the computer; it is conditional equipment, not a requirement for every setup.
The options differ in how you build the picture and manage the show. An encoder gives you a place to combine sources, overlays, and transitions; direct console streaming avoids a separate capture-card-to-computer path. The available official guidance does not establish a universal reliability or latency advantage for either method.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check the current requirements and your channel status in YouTube Studio before you prepare a show (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming). Do not rely on old advice that every channel must enable live streaming exactly 24 hours in advance; that is not established by the current guidance cited here.

Verify the records and clear the footage
Check the leaderboard entry
“World record” is specific to a game, category, ruleset, and sometimes version or platform. Before scheduling the show, check the relevant game leaderboard and note the runner, displayed time, category, platform or version when listed, proof status, and the date you checked. A leaderboard’s top result can change, so state the date rather than presenting record status as permanent.
Speedrun.com explains that submissions commonly require video or photo proof, that each board’s rules define matters such as timing, and that moderators review submissions (Speedrun.com: About). Follow the individual board’s current rules; a video that appears online is not necessarily a verified record under every category’s standards.

Get permission to rebroadcast each recording
A public leaderboard entry is not permission to copy or retransmit its video. Speedrun.com’s moderation guidance says, “Do not copy or reupload a player’s video without permission from the user” (Speedrun.com Moderation Rules). Obtain explicit permission from the runner or other applicable rights holder for the actual recording, retain a record of that permission, and follow any requested credit. Attribution is useful, but it does not replace permission.
Speedrun.com has also said users own their run submissions and that prior blanket Creative Commons permission for site content no longer applies to reuse beyond operating the site (Speedrun.com terms update). Check the current site terms if you plan to reuse leaderboard material at scale; do not assume the leaderboard itself grants broadcast rights.

Create and schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Create a broadcast or schedule one for the intended date and time.
- Set an accurate title, description, privacy setting, and thumbnail. Identify the program as a rerun and avoid wording that implies the runner is playing live.
- In the description or an on-screen card, credit each runner and identify the game, category, displayed time, and version or platform where available. Include the date you checked the record status.
- Keep chat moderated and make sure the show complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube may restrict or remove live content that violates its policies; a channel with a live restriction may also be prevented from using another channel to stream during that restriction.
YouTube’s encoder workflow treats the scheduled broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources. In its documented Live API workflow, a stream can be reused for scheduled broadcasts, while only one event is live at a time (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts). For a normal creator setup, follow the current controls in Live Control Room rather than needing to manage the API directly.
Connect the encoder and prepare the program
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream settings and copy the stream key for the event or stream you are using.
- Open your encoder’s stream settings and enter the YouTube stream key as its destination credential. YouTube describes the key as what lets the encoder connect and send the feed (YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings).
- Keep the key private like a password. Do not show it in the broadcast, screenshots, or a public walkthrough. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings before sending another feed.
- Load only the recordings you have cleared for use. Prepare a playlist order, transitions, and any title cards; make sure labels match the actual run and do not imply live play.
- Start the encoder preview or send a private/unlisted test. Check picture, game audio, narration or music levels, overlays, transitions, and the Live Control Room stream status. YouTube’s encoder guide recommends a private or unlisted setup when you are not actually streaming publicly (YouTube Help: Encoder streaming).
- When the event is ready, start the scheduled broadcast from the encoder and confirm in Live Control Room that the incoming feed is present before making the event public or directing viewers to it.
Copyright, policy, and continuity limits
YouTube’s official material explains live broadcasts and encoder setup, but it does not establish that every form of continuous prerecorded looping is permitted or that a stream is guaranteed to remain live indefinitely. Check YouTube’s current policies and Live Control Room controls for your specific use. Make the prerecorded nature of the program clear and do not present old footage as a live performance.

Only use footage you are authorized to transmit, and make sure the game footage, music, overlays, and any other included material are covered by your permissions. YouTube applies its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service to live content; a policy violation can lead to restrictions or removal. A sound workflow reduces avoidable problems, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming.

- You cannot create or start a live event: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live restriction was applied in the prior 90 days. Review the current Studio notice and YouTube eligibility guidance.
- The event is waiting for data or shows no incoming video: Confirm the encoder is running, that it is using the correct stream key, and that the selected output source is active. Recheck the key in Live Control Room without exposing it publicly.
- The picture appears but game audio is missing: Check the encoder’s selected audio source and its mute and level settings, then verify the result in a private or unlisted test before going public.
- The wrong run is labeled as the record: Reopen the relevant category leaderboard and verify the current entry, rules, proof status, and date checked. Correct the title, description, or on-screen card before the public broadcast.
- A runner asks for the video to be removed: Pause use of the recording while you resolve the permission issue. Keep the permission record and any agreed credit details with your production notes.
- YouTube stops or restricts the broadcast: Check Live Control Room and Studio notifications for the stated cause, then review current policy and eligibility information. Do not assume that restarting from another channel bypasses a restriction.
